Behind the rough hands and fishy scent is a gentle soul. In his fantasies her silver back lightly touched the surface of the water and slipped away again and again, teasing him. With his heart eaten, he looked at the ripples, picturing the iridescent reflection of her scales.

These wonderful vintage toad images were scanned from the pages of The Frog Book: North American Toads And Frogs With A Study Of The Habits And Life Histories Of Those Of The Northeastern States. Published in 1907, this book was written and compiled by Mary C. Dickerson, the first curator of herpetology at the American Museum of Natural History.
From top to bottom we see western toads [Anaxyrus boreas], Colorado river toads [Incilius alvarius], Great Plains toads [Anaxyrus cognatus], and California toads [Anaxyrus boreas halophilus]. Uploads provided by the Biodiversity Heritage Library.
