He laughs, smooth, beautiful, and tenor, making you feel warm inside your bones. And it hits you; maybe it all boils down to this: people will do anything, anything, for a really nice laugh.

I wish I could love. But I seem to have lost the passion and forgotten the desire. I am too much concentrated on myself. My own personality has become a burden to me. I want to escape, to go away, to forget.

Edward Steichen: Richard Strauss, 1905
The German composer and conductor Richard Strauss (1864-1949) visited the United States for the first time in the spring of 1904. He came to New York expressly to conduct the premier of Symphonia domestica (1903), an orchestral work which caused a stir in the music community by detailing the composer鈥檚 own life at home with his wife and child. Known by such repertory standards as the operas Salome, Elektra, and Der Rosenkavalier, Strauss is shown here as the paradigmatic Romantic genius.
