Haven't been able to get these words out of my head. The fact they are the last thing he says. At first, I was just like "Okay, that's a very Kunikida thing to say" but then I put them into context of what just happened.
He'd been impaled and was desperately trying to use his last moments to allow Tanazaki time to escape. He knew he wasn't living after this, so as per his ideals he was going to fight until his last breath to save another life. If he can die in-service of helping someone else survive, that's enough for Kunikida.
And then he hears Atsushi shout his name. Atsushi ran up from behind Amenogozen, Kunikida probably saw him coming as well. He gripped the sword in his chest with the last of his strength to aid Atsushi in whatever way he could.
And Atsushi chose to save Tanizaki. The very thing he'd been trying to do just seconds before.
That why I think he'd smiling here, that's why I think he says his ideals will live on. Not in some abstract way, but in a direct reference to Atsushi, because he was Atsushi's mentor too. From day one, Atsushi has been seeking guidance from Kunikida, even when he didn't know how to give it.
One of the first pieces of advice Kunikida gives Atsushi is to "start thinking what you can do."

And it has been something he's been trying to figure out ever since. What can he do to help those who need it? To be worthy of living?
Both Atsushi and Kunikida want to save people. Both of them have been struggling on how to achieve that this whole time. Saving people isn't just a single action to Kunikida, it's sacrifice, it's taking on a burden, it's knowing you're tied to this person afterwards.

It's knowing you can't always save everyone no matter how much you want to. It's prioritizing saving who can and living with that.

Kunikida knew he couldn't be saved, but he hoped Tanizaki could. When Atsushi chose to leave him and save Tanizaki he following in Kunikida's footsteps.
His ideals will live on, in Atsushi.

never getting over the fact that there’s a light in akutagawa’s eyes now. his first life was filled with death and suffering and confusion and despair, he died without every truly getting to decide who it was he wanted to be for himself, and then his body was used as patient zero for a vampire epidemic. everything in akutagawa’s first life was about how he could best be utilised as a weapon, a tool, a thing, and a dead man walking. only one person ever treated him as a—flawed, frustrating, complicated—human being, and he died to protect that man. but now, akutagawa has been reborn, and there’s a light in his eyes and a new mission in his heart to protect, to be the shield he always has been deep down, and he’s legally dead which means he finally has the chance to choose for himself where he’s going to place his next step forward

Guys I may have made some connections between the hunting dogs and the armed detective agency (im making it up)
Fukuzawa and Fukuchi have long term ties to the government (fukuzawa was an assassin and fukuchi a war hero)
Ranpo and Tachihara were teenage boys rejected by those around them
Dazai and Jouno are ex crime leaders
Yosano and Teruko are little girls forced into a war they never should have been in
And where does that leave Tecchou??? What does this mean for him??? Is he like Kunikida in which hes the Only Semi Normal Bitch??? Or is he like Tanizaki in which hes seemingly normal but actually the Most Fucked Up

why is teruko sexist? I don't see it
(*On why the Teruko scene is sexist, not Teruko herself)
Imagine being a female character in a seinen manga.
You've got near zero character elaboration or growth or expansion. Readers literally know nothing about you. You don't have a backstory. Your only role so far has seemed to be moving the plot forward. And now there's just been two intensely homoerotic chapters between two main male characters, and at the resolution of those, you're required to enter the stage. However, it's not of your own volition; it's to solve the command of what one of the two male character had previously ordered you. The command, specifically, is to kill him. That brings you immense pain, because apparently your love for him was deep and true (and not an ignorable irrelevant side gag as some readers hoped). By the way, you're killing him to spare that PRECISE feeling of pain born from having to kill a loved one to the other male character, because of course your commander wouldn't put him through that, but making you suffer the same is fine apparently.
So now you've killed him, right? I mean you impaled the man with your own hands, and yeah maybe he ordered you to do that so it wasn't your decision and you don't have free will or freedom of choice and never will in this franchise, and yeah maybe you're being used again as nothing but a plot device, and yeah maybe you're only making nothing more than a four pages appearance again despite the last two chapters having been nothing but male spotlight, and yeah maybe you were once again delegated to the role of love interest to a man who doesn't requite your feelings– but at least you can claim to have done that, right? You can say you killed him! Maybe, if the author feels merciful, they'll even spare a few panels to elaborate on how doing that effected you.
Wrong. You didn't kill him. The cool action doesn't belong to you. You can't own it. The honour of doing that, the courage, the pain, the determination and moral conflict it required, it's not yours to retain, to posses, to show off. You're now submitting your sword – your sword!! The symbol of your role and of your power and a great motif for your character! – to the other male character. You're screaming, “You killed him! You are the one who cut down the captain! Any other story, and I'll make you regret it!”. That is the story. The story is his, it's theirs, not yours. There was no space for you in it since the beginning. There's tears in your eyes.
Imagine being a female character in a seinen manga.
#slowly adds a new reason we don’t like fukichi in this house-#He well written where I hate him not because of the writing but because he’s done well but god is he a fuckin bastard lmao
