Day before deadline!
I’m more of an illustrator than a graphic designer but I’ll give it a good go seeming as no one else can use the software. Am still waiting on some late people to submit their articles to me. I’ve pieced together most of the magazine and have done all the illustrations in my usual style. I feel as though this module has helped me to develop my skills with communicating and working in a group, and well as leadership and organisation.

Week seven developments...

We’re well on track to developing our magazine. All research has been individually researched and everybody has their own task to complete. I have to create two magazine articles in separate futuristic styles (I’m studying illustration and most use to digital design so this task is perfect for me) unfortunately I’ve got to wait until my classmates have written their articles in order to begin creating around their text. However I’m a quick worker and will be looking into layouts so I understand exactly what I’m creating beforehand.

Week six developments...
1720s
Ø There were also clear class distinctions that were prevalent in the realms of both home life, outward social life, and education. New developments in recreation, commercialization, and industrialization also led to a transformation in both entertainment and occupations available.
Ø Marriage was also very closely tied to social class; women were seldom married into lower social rungs. It also came with heavy social implications for the family’s legacy and reputation among their peers.
Ø Men were usually in charge of all the finances involved in the household and did most of the work to financially support the family. It was common for a man to be well educated and have work outside of the household. The patriarch made decisions on behalf of the family, such as whether his wife could work outside the home and whether the children could attend school. He was the owner of all the property and monetary values in the household and women rarely spoke against or divorced their husband. Children were taught to obey the patriarch
Ø Also, it was important for families to maintain social status, which meant a daughter was never married to someone of lower standing. Mothers and fathers spent much time searching for the best possible spouse for their child, in order to benefit the family.
Ø The idea of a status hierarchy or “social class” was a distinguishing key feature in the 18th Century. This hierarchy determined everything about society and etched their fate eternally in stone. Among the differences in these classes were the attitudes that each one exhibited.
Ø Patriotism and national identity were very large identity factors in times of revolutions and war.
2020s à Instagram Account
Ø “What do you do?” à career-based, socio-economic ladder comparison
Ø Ethnicity and race, backgrounds and culture (how were we raised?)
Ø Generational identity (Millennials, Gen Z, Baby Boomers)
2720s à microchip collage
Ø Philosophies, values, morals, lifestyles, political stances
Ø Minimalism/maximalist, veganism/meat-eaters, low-waste/consumerist
3020s (planetarium)à “rose-colored lenses”
Ø Stop categorizing people
Ø No racism, sexism, classism, etc.
Ø Government accessory to prevent judgement of others?
Ø Bias and discrimination towards anything not 100% human
This week we have been refining our ideas and future artefacts down, looking at how we can present and what we may include in our future worlds. I believe that we are still moving forward to creating a magazine which includes illustrations and written work which describes our futures.

Week 4 developments
This week we’ve decided on a format we were thinking or films but feel as though a magazine is the way to go forward as we’re all working from home. Plus it’s easier to share files this way as well as get out final outcome across
Each person has been given a different task and role, some will draw, be doing written work and graphic design. Me and another student from Fine art will be doing the main design aspects such as creating the magazine.
Some students in our group study computer science so perhaps will may look at creating some sort of app and one of them likes the idea of character design which is good! In essence we are planning on having three characters for each time period which describes our idea of identity.
It’s interesting working in such a remote way. I feel as though it’s rather challenging due to all the chaos in the world but hopefully our group can pull through.

Week 3 developments...
A lot has been happening recently! Due to the University lockdown and need for social isolation it seems our project will need to take a more digital turn. In our WhatsApp group my peers and I are thinking about what to do next, these are very strange circumstances to say the least! COVID-19 is now a serious pandemic, which seems quite fitting with this module as we look into future worlds. I believe we are looking at turning our project into a magazine or digitalised poster as it’s one of the best ways to turn our immersive experience into a digitalised artefact. Also easily excessable for all our members online as we have students from oversees, such as America, China and India. This week our discussions will have to be all online as people are self-isolating. But I think our main focus will have to be how we adapt to these new circumstances.

Week 2 Developments...
For our group project, we have made some good developments this week. We are looking to create a final presentation in an exhibition-style with some mixed media which includes, a Model/actor (living artefact), Artwork for a living exhibit (such as illustrations etc), a guide/caption for artwork for info + explanation
Exhibit mockup idea:

The guide (in yellow) walks viewers through the different futures, separated by fake walls (in blue). These “walls” could be curtains or boxes or other props. Just something to separate the spaces. The red Xs are meant to be a moment of reflection and transition between futures, where viewers are asked to the participant (for example we “think about a time where your hope in humanity will be restored, share with a partner” or “think about what kind of reasons people don’t get along, share with a partner”). This will help viewers to shift mindsets. Still need to decide on whether we wanna use models in each space or only some, what kind of artwork we’ll display, and make accompanying captions.
An update for our schedule: Presentation on April 3rd
March 6-13: Sketching out futures and locating rooms and resources
March 13-20: Building and creating
March 20-27: Building and creating
March 27-April 3: Last-minute touch-ups!
I feel as though my group has made some brilliant conclusions this week, we were struggling to really define our idea as we had so many of them! But personally, I feel as though we’re going to create a really exciting end result.

Theme for final presentation!
Week 1:
Within our session today we brainstormed ideas and came to conclusions of what our final presentation palimpsest could be...
Rough Ideas
Control of consciousness
The link between cellular/molecular basis and consciousness is not well understood, so what if in the future we totally understand how it and the brain as a whole works?
Able to change your consciousness: how you perceive pain, your personality, fix brain damage, download skills (similar to that in the Matrix), inhibit emotions, etc
Policing and laws change: brains of geniuses, criminals, upstanding citizens, and disadvantaged people curated into a large collective conscious that dictates right and wrong for the whole of society → could be a utopia or a dystopia
Tattoos
Currently signify life events, affiliations, and personality, so what if in the future that’s how you’re ID? Ie family crests (economic) , status,
Currently: tattoos for the sake of art, not necessarily for meaning but cause it looks siiiiiiick
Moving ink – reflect vitals and other bodily changes
Fake tattoo market – for those who don’t have status, like faking a resume
Tattoos become so ingrained in society that humans are born with some from their parents, showing a visible representation of not only the individuals history but their families as well
Humans look totally different than current humans
Birthmarks? Scars? (killswitch, achilles heel typa thing)
The ‘Red Carpet’
What is the societal power of the red carpet? Whoever walks it is deemed high-class socially.
Re-invent what it means to “walk the red carpet”
What are the values that we apply to it now and what can we use it for in the future?
It is a commodity which instills feelings of wealth, social power, public image, etc.
Why do we care? It is literally a colored rug.
Disease/Germs
An immersive installation including a visual. texturised impression of pollution, disease and germs.
Segregation of talent into different parts of the world
What is your theme? → Tattoos –
Present on the bottom and build up to future [4 levels] →
Currently: taboo stereotype slowly dwindling, but still seen as unprofessional in most job sectors and frowned upon in some cultures (ie East asian cultures) and encouraged in others (ie Maori, polynesian cultures); seen as art and self expression, doesn’t necessarily have to have meaning behind it
Political: white nationalism/Nazis, mafia, LGBTQA+ (ie rainbow), feminists, vegan tattoos
Social: affiliations ie Navy/military, creative spaces and artists, personal development (ie getting a special tattoo every life event), marriage, stick n pokes from friends
Economic: tattoo businesses are growing among other body modifications ie piercings, deliberate career because tattoos are still lw taboo and possible family repercussions ; tattoo removal industry - growing
Cultural: gang tattoos (tear tattoo), stick n pokes and machines, life events depending on ethnic group, religions mostly against tattoos
20 years: more people have tattoos, taboo is pretty much gone except for older generation depending on geographic location,
Political: political vues - where you stand on voting and political issues eg, labour vs conservative are you left or right wing
Social: tattooed makeup (ie eyebrows, eyeliner), UV tattoos are the rage among the youth especially at clubs n art scenes, using ashes of dead loved ones for tattoos, Memento shit
Economic: credits cards on body catching on, special gloves developed to work against misuse of contactless cards
Cultural: sub cultural tattoos, certain tattoos can be identified as a certain sub ethnic group
200 years:
Political: concept of immortality - someone’s brain is downloaded to a dedicated computer in a sort of bank/safe : for example if they were president of a country/company - their consciousness continues making the “most important decisions” for a country/company; (“they live on the forearm of their eldest child” in a way)
Social: tattooed teeth, drip medicine inked into skin that will treat whatever illness and will also let others know what the person has/had, some black mirror shit,
Economic: credit cards, , kid safe ink, sustainability ink - regulated ink eg plant based, ashes of dead loved ones easier tattoo removal
Cultural: passports in chip-implant form
2,000 years:
Political:
Social: projection tattoos, part cyborg (moving ink); remembering memories by projecting them onto the wall, physical phones will be eradicated ; makeup is permanently tattoed (like drag queen style makeup - every element is responsible for different functions) ; the 12h pill - people can cover their family tattoos this way and falsify information - useful for secret agents
Economic: have
Cultural: chip projects from skin - onto opposing wall - e.g. religious people can have the bible on their forearm and project it onto the back of a plane seat to read it for moments of mindfulness.
How will you incorporate social, economic, cultural, and political elements?
What media or mixed media approach?
Transfer tattoos
Holograms for projected tattoos
Using actors to represent the time-changes: now, 20, 200, 2000
Assign roles and create a schedule
(1) sketching (Annalise, Amelia, Ellis, Suryansh, Belle) - speak to technicians (Tiffany + Chloe)
(2) troubleshooting - finding the room - the fine detail (everyone)
(3) making (members broken up by what thing they’re making)
(4) finishing the fine details (everyone)
Post advice thoughts :
Main idea may be identity as a whole
Tattoos beyond ornamental —what other purpose for tattoos? Superpower like?
Levels don’t have to flow into each other — can think about the conflicts that could arise
Idea: what are we without identity? Could you strip someone of their identity? Besides financial fraud currently, how in the future could you have your ID stolen or changed?
Shifting IDs based on environment/people
In essence for next week I will be illustrating identity ideas :
20 years - basic moving ink showing stats and persons profile
200 years Each human has a barcode or symbol tattooed on their palms - similar to a dog chip which can display all their basic information when scanned in a projection
2000 years - moving ink that displays information like a phone or tablet screen including passport ids bank account - we are ourselves machines need no form of exterior technologies

Finding Palimpsests
A Palimpsest: something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form
Today we’re going to exploit London as a situation palimpsest by researching the cultural and historical influences on Carnaby street. We will be looking at commodities
Tower of Babel artwork - most desirable at the top commercial and social spaces are towards the bottom of the artwork showing layering, the different levels.
Winston Churchill statue defaced in London’s 2000 May Day Riots. He resembles a punk rocker which is highly contradictory considering his historical status. A green Mohawk and blood coming from the statue’s mouth - symbolism of the cultural information. It’s an attack on politics / political figures and our British establishment.
Analysis of palimpsest - defacing/ graffiti fits under cultural and political effect especially within the extinction rebellion symbol within the telephone box. It’s attempting to make an impression in a subtle way and has a political context. Yet there’s this relationship with the call girls stickers showing a social context, yet is this commercial as sex can now be brought?
It’s interesting to see these stickers are places onto something from the 1900s, things like this would have taken place but, you can see how times have changed in a cultural sense, society definitely wasn’t as outspoken back then.

Group artwork reflecting upon present-day pop culture.
We used a collage app/site called Piclay, to create a collage of contemporary consumer brands and products. It’s interesting to look at how the taste of branding has developed over time. Within post-structuralism a historic view of cultural concepts, how have they changed over time? If we look at artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, there's a huge leap from the pop art style use of blocky, bold colours which has been adapted into fashion branding, such as the Iceberg Collection (2001) inspired by his vibrant works. In comparison, Structuralism, the systematic patterns and structures that can be found across western culture, the brands such as Maybelline, Apple and Kit Kat had all changed their branding image over time to appeal to whatever is popular at the current time.
Our poster image asks the question ‘What does it cost you?’ meaning are we too enticed and persuaded by how brands use popular culture? Surely using specific marketing techniques to lure in consumers comes with a price? Whether that be consumers money, or whether that be a brand ‘selling out’ to fit into societal needs and desires. Or perhaps brands are playing upon social issues such as diversity, disability, LGBTQ communities, mental health etc to push their brand into our modern social awareness and acceptance of all people. But could we argue that this is an exploitation of the struggles people face in their daily lives? What does branding and advertisement of products have to do with anybody’s personal issues? There seems to be a forced political agenda within branding in modern times, which to a certain degree shows the amazing growth of how far our society has come over the years, but is this not becoming unnaturally strained out?

This is ... Diversity
There seems to be a distinct lack of female as well as racial diversity within Bafta and other Hollywood Award ceremony’s.
Freud’s views said such unbelievably distorted things as “Women oppose change, receive passively, and add nothing of their own”. Which many would say they disagree with until we look at the nominees within the industry. Only five female directors have ever been selected for nomination, Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker (2009) is the only one to have ever one. Some may say that men just so happen to be more involved in film making and acting, but this really isn’t the case. It’s biased towards gender which goes unseen as it has managed to integrate itself into society so very well. This issue is evidently highlighted within the film and entertainment industry. Issues and movements such as #metoo and the Harvey Weinstein allegations have further highlighted the terrible prejudice that goes unseen, unheard and unresolved within pop culture.
Alongside this, there’s a huge lack of racial diversity as well as stereotyping within Hollywood, whether it is a token black character, yellowface or blackface etc, Hollywood has still yet to catch onto modern times, the meaning and importance of equality amongst people.
In essence, within a Freudian perspective, we have the outdated view that men (predominantly white men) are superior as women ‘add nothing’ to contribute. Whereas the marxism view suggests this essence of a higher society within Hollywood which is rather hard to infiltrate. Perhaps we are merely at the beginning of this change in Hollywood and there will be more equality, respect and diversity to come.
