yes dear hello, i really appreciate the blog and am just getting started so i have two questions: 1. you have several great tutorials on petticoat math, especially a-line petticoats. any chance we might get cupcake petticoat math? and 2. i'm planning on making an organza petticoat, and i'm not sure how much is, well, too much. i know that you need more or less fabric for the same amount of poof depending on the kind, would 4x my waist for the first tier be too big to fit most skirts and eat me?
The amount of too much poof is not determined by the petticoat, but by the skirt.
This is two petticoats stacked onto a hoop skirt. It's as close to horizontal at the waist as I could get without stacking platter tutus on top.
Which I didn't do because all my tutus I have on hand are small enough that I can't get them onto my butt.
Not because I didn't want to do that.
This is very obviously too much poof for this skirt. You can see how the skirt is completely filled up, like a balloon. There's no natural-looking folds in the skirt. It's just stuffed as full as it gets.
But look at the waist. The waist itself isn't actually over-full. The pileup is at the hem.
Same petticoat ensemble, over a pleated circle skirt. It looks absurd, and exaggerated, but it does not actually look like the petticoat is attempting to expand beyond the limits of the skirt.
I need to find the other pictures I've taken of this dress, because they're all in this hallway and they all have animals photobombing me.
So, for a second, we really need to think about petticoats a little bit more like stuffing a plush toy and less like a garment. If you are making a bear, and you want to make him fluffy and huggable in his middle, but have his hands and feet very firm and holding their shape, you would put a lot more filling into the paws and less into his torso. This is the same principle as making a petticoat, except that the petticoat has to hold onto itself.
You don't want your waist of your skirt to be completely, all the way filled. However, it's really not all that possible to over-fill the waistband. It's all about how well you're filling the skirt on the way down.
So, no, I don't think 4x your waist is unreasonable poof for a cupcake petticoat. Just remember to take into account the hems of the skirt that you're wearing it with. Keep the hem in balance with the waist, to keep that proper y=-x^2 shape.
Also remember that you can shrink an organza petticoat in a controlled way by steaming the waistband.

Tutorial: Cupcake Petticoat by Blueagainlikemorning
This is a tutorial for making a bell/ cupcake petticoat, commonly found in lolita fashion.
*a quick suggestion: I lose things all. the. time. So to keep track of my sewing tools, I keep them in a little bin like so:

anything that belongs in the box, goes immediately back inside the box when I’m done with it.
Now, on to the tutorial!
