Catholic Charities Refugee and Immigration Services Mentoring Program
CCRIS has a couple great programs to connect and assist recent refugees:
American Friends Program - brochure is here
Spend 2 hours a week for a minimum of six months to help a refugee family to:
learn to function independently in their new surroundings
cope with cultural shock
learn a new language
become acquainted with the aspects of American life (home appliances, telephone, public transportation, street signs, traffic signals, public schools and libraries, the postal system, banking and currency, taxes, and social etiquette)
become familiar with Portland’s various religious communities and support groups

Girls on the Run – supporting healthy habits for young girls throughout southern Maine
Girls on the Run supports young girls between Grade 3 and Grade 8 in a 10-week after school running program. Volunteers are needed for regular coaching and also helping out with the seasonal 5k run.

Special Surfers - non-profit empowering children & adults with special needs to experience surfing. in Kennebunk Maine (Gooch’s Beach)
Surf Nights happen every third Tuesday of June, July, August every year. You don’t have to surf to help out! Special Surfers needs volunteers for equipment transport, registration, and clean up too.

Root Cellar – Christian support for inner city youth and families in Lewiston and Portland.
Root Cellar offers space an programsing for city youth as an alternative to the streets. Root Cellar is supported by the help of volunteers from any denomination but has a cultural Christian connection. Root Cellar also hosts dental clinics.
