How “Learning How to Learn” (a Coursera Course) has help me change how I learn in a positive way
Many times in learning we are not clear of what we are going to face when we start something new. This new learning for me which is “Learning How to Learn” has opened my mind and help me start to recognize how wrong I have been about learning and studying. For me this has been a process, that I wish I could say it has been successful from start from finish, but the truth is that may of the things learn in this course I just trying to apply them gradually, because breaking bad learning habits of many years does not happen in one day or very short time. So In this blog I wan to share what I think are the best tips for learning and how we can try to use it, for example in my case, with my son who is 9 years old. So I want to share this great and simple tips that can help you change your learning in a positive way, based in what I have learn in “”Learning How to Learn”. One more important thing, keep the wheel running…
1. New vocabulary. I start using and expressing my self in a different way. For example if i was learning and getting stuck with something, I would say “Ok let me start my diffuse thinking”. So make learning a new opportunity to learn new concepts and words and start using them in your daily routines.
2. Stop being old fashion, changes are good. Sometimes we are scared of changes, but never be afraid of changes and using different techniques that can help you learn better. Are you a more graphical person use mind-maps to help to organized your ideas, do recall of text you have studied, use flashcards to learn new topics, also you can create your own new way to learn more effective.
3. To-Do List. A To-Do list is always a great way to organized and plan your activities. Sometimes are day can be very busy, but we should take, as recommended in the course plan ahead, make your list the night before, and this can apply for your daily activities to. To kick track there are many helpful tools that can help you create a To-Do List. Help your kids also create the study plan and to-do list.
4. Keep a Journal. One of tips, I most liked was the idea of keeping a Journal. write of what you did o learn in the day, is great way to document your learning progress. If you are trying to break a habit, writing about it and reflecting upon it can you lead you to start changes. If you can write in more than one language, switch writing between languages this helps you brain to strengthen your language skills and vocabulary.
5. Sleep well. Sleeping well and letting our brain make the connections and the neurons creating chunks in our brain, will help us in the short, medium and long term to keep us mentally healthy and more mentally skilled.
6. Read books. Read all kinds of books, read children’s book, science fiction, nature book, teen books, adventure books, any book will help you open your mind and help you learning skills.
7. Give yourself rewards when accomplishing your new learning. It is important that whenever you set yourself to goal and accomplish it, give yourself a reward, this will elevate your motivation to continue your learning.
8. Finish what you begin. Not necessary right away. It is important to complete what you have set to learn, for example learning a new language, sometimes we can find bumps on they way or get lost but it is important to finish what you have started. Put in practice by making small progress, learn at your on pace. If what you are doing is not what you thought put a milestone and start on a new thing.
9. Put time limit to your work. Whenever yo start a new task or activity to learn something new, set a time limit. It is also important to rest, let you brain assimilate your new learning and make the connections. This will be benefit you and your health.
10. Share with other what you are learning. A good way ti learn and help you gain confidence in what you are learning is sharing your knowledge with others or explaining someone a new concept you just learn, this will help you know if you really learned.
