And there might not be a sadder thing
Than watchin' Saturn lose their rings
And black holes slowly dancin' in the dark
It's a song that they were born to sing
About the end of everything
Until it all goes up in one last spark
Everyone you love is gonna die

something in spn that's brought up regularly is the fact that the brothers are the only people who will believe victims of supernatural crimes, often to the massive relief of the victims, and like. I get "why is supernatural X instead of Y" is a stupid question, but man. Imagine the show taking its own environments and history seriously. A version of the show that conceives of hunters not as violent vigilantes but as people who work at the margins of the criminal punishment system, who investigate and take seriously the crimes that society and the police do not. Allegories for sexual assault, hate crimes, the horrific treatment of the disabled and the mentally ill - these things are already present in the text of spn but they aren't situated in their societal context. You could so easily use the presence of the supernatural to highlight that like, yeah actually the police don't give a fuck about women who are sexually assaulted, they don't give a fuck about hate crimes, especially racially motivated ones, they don't give a fuck about how poorly disabled people are treated. Often times they are the ones perpetrating these crimes. And there is no justice for these people. Like, the only reason hunters are necessary in the first place is because nobody else knows about the supernatural. Following the show's own logic, should you simply tell the cops that vampires and shit exist, hunters would be wholly unnecessary. There are no systemic reasons why victims of supernatural crimes wouldn't be taken seriously in the world of spn, only a lack of knowledge on the part of the judicial system. Which is just like. laughable.
I'm not saying this would fix the show or resolve its bigoted elements, but it would at least acknowledge that Sam and Dean actually Live In A Society and are victims of that society (they're poor, they're abused by their father, etc). Sam's dream of becoming a lawyer could easily be spun as him wanting to be a public defender. Dean, especially in the earlier seasons, is shown to be sympathetic to marginalised groups like prisoners, and the homeless. The brothers steal, they lie, Dean even mouths off to the police. They grew up in poverty. These elements already exist in the text, but they're used to forward this incredibly reactionary white male power fantasy about protecting hearth and home instead.
So like again I want to stress, the reason spn is Like That is because it's supposed to be a power fantasy for white america. It is ideologically incapable of being anything other than what it is. But it's also not an inevitable conclusion; monster hunting as a genre does not require a reactionary framework. And it's especially maddening because it uses all these systemic problems as fucking set dressing, as a cheap punchline, as individualised problems that require a couple of heroic white guys to swoop in and save the day. It fucking sucks and it doesn't need to suck!
