TECHNICAL ISSUES
#1 iMovie chose not to run smoothly on my macbook air, all uploaded footage filtered through the VHS app subsequently had been read wrong and (ironically) appeared to glitch when I ran the videos through iMovie the editing process. I assumed this was merely a visual delay and not an issue with the way iMovie had processed the video code [fig 1 & 2]. However, when attempting to upload my final project into file form, the video would not upload/would cancel/generally malfunction [fig 3]. It appeared the video files themselves were not being translated successfully to mp4 and cancelled halfway through the uploading process. YouTube, Vimeo and iMovie Theatre mode were also not able to read the files. My solution was to record the screen and audio whilst playing the video through iMovie on fullscreen, using a combination of QuickTime Player and Soundflower [fig 4]. The black framing around the final YouTube video is a consequence of this decision.
#2 iMovie, combined with my computer not being suited for storing video files and having limited storage space crashed frequently. Luckily my project was never entirely deleted.

DEVELOPMENT OF VIDEO: AUDIO 2
After being bored to death by the Seabreeze track, I enlisted some help to edit the sound. Under my instruction/intention for the direction of the final product, he produced the second track included in the video by sampling the original song and then adding the beat and percussion. Both the original track and the one featuring the sample were also scaled an octave down.
My intention for this decision was to retain the atmospheric moodiness of the reverberating chords whilst adding more texture and pace. By adding a beat and percussion, the track feels more graspable to the listener, and the video gains continuity.

DEVELOPMENT OF VIDEO: AUDIO
In my initial mind map, i’d listed that I wanted the video to be cut to a ‘soundtrack of monotony’, which I envisioned as a soundscape of sounds you’d hear around the house - a bath tub drain bubbling, kettling, wind rattling outside the window etc. - however, to test editing the video to a track I chose one of the first ones that appeared on my iTunes, downloaded from god-knows-where, entitled ‘Seabreeze - Topographic Maps’ [listed above].
The outcome of using this test-track was that I found it actually worked with the atmosphere of video. With the reverberating of chords producing a plodding, calm yet still vaguely dull element that suited the scenes I had already filmed. However, after listening to the same loop over and over again and being endlessly bored, I realised it needed editing/remixing

DEVELOPMENT OF VIDEO: CREATING CONTENT 2
Ultimately, my friend’s ideas would form the basis of the short narrative sequences my video features. The final list of scenes based on both mind and my friend’s ideas are listed below, all of which were filmed but only some of which made it into the final cut of the video:

DEVELOPMENT OF VIDEO: CREATING CONTENT
To create ‘authentic’ content for the video, I asked a selection of my friends via Facebook to reflect upon their own experiences in response to the outline of the project [names/identities not included]

DEVELOPMENT OF VIDEO: FINDING THE AESTHETIC 4
Alongside the glitch, I wanted the aesthetic of the video to emulate the quality of VHS footage - be it from actual tape footage or otherwise. This decision was inspired by the music videos of ‘Superstar and Star’ on YouTube - possibly the only music artist to continue to exclusively use digitally converted VHS footage for his music videos and vlogs. The above video exemplifies this.
And, whilst I did locate a tape player and film some footage, I was ultimately guided away from this decision due to the complexities and cost of converting tape to digital. I was, instead, advised to use my phone to film & an app to filter the footage into VHS style.

EXPERIMENT:
Testing the software effect in increments to observe what glitch aesthetic was possible, from 0% [top] to 100% [bottom]
RESULTS/REFLECTIONS:
Problem - The software only produces gif
Solution - Record the screen with QuickTime Player

DEVELOPMENT OF VIDEO: FINDING THE AESTHETIC 3
To replicate this glitch aesthetic within an mp4 format, I found the open source glitch software Corruptvideo, or YouGlitch, via Google and decided to experiment with this accordingly. The above photos are screenshots of these experiments.

EXPERIMENT:
[top to bottom]
photo 1: Copy a chunk of text and pasting it 20+ times
photo 2: Same text file but some of the code deleted
photo 3: Same text file but find and replace R with A
RESULTS/REFLECTIONS:
The textedit experimentation confirmed for me to use the glitch aesthetic within my own video artefact. However, this method appeared not to be replicable with mp4 files and, although Briz had developed his own, open-source software to glitch video files, this would not open with my most recent software update.
