2018 in Review — Our Picks
Tumblr media
We’ve compiled our most exciting acquisitions of 2018. See what our staff had to say about the posters that stood out most.
Thank you to everyone — our staff, customers, supporters and fans — who made this year a great one. Cheers!
Above, RBG, USA, 2018, art by Gravillis Inc. Our most popular selling poster this year.
Tumblr media
La Dolce Vita, Italy, 1960
“Looking at this poster one not only gets an impression of the characters, lifestyle and tabloids that frequent the film but the sheer thrill of what this film offers. Fellini may have shot it in black and white but it remains a film full of life and color and this poster captures that beautifully: The alluring elegance of Rome under neon and its underlying shadow, the insincerity of a world ruled by fame, prestige and status.” -Nico, Gallery Assistant
Tumblr media
2001: A Space Odyssey, Japan, R1995
“1995 was the year we needed a totally awesome pink and silver poster with twinkling foil stars for 2001 and I thank whoever made this for giving us exactly that.” -Stan, Gallery Manager
Tumblr media
Marilyn, Japan, 1963
“To me this is the perfect use of a Japanese speed format. The design is minimal, Marilyn looks amazing, and those lucite heels are to die for.” -Laura, Gallery Assistant
Tumblr media
Brazil, UK, 1985
“This gorgeous UK Quad embodies everything Brazil is about and easily remains the film’s best poster. Whether it be the shadowed, never-ending drawers and the frightening labyrinth of bureaucracy it embodies, or the elegant, fantastical flying figure eager for escape, to the title’s font no one can ever forget, it’s as if the film’s imagery were printed on paper.” -Nico
Tumblr media
Solaris, Italy, 1974
“This might not be the most appropriate poster for the overall mood and visuals of Solaris, but the artwork is extremely well done and in the classic painterly style that was popular in Italy in the 1960s and 70s.” -Laura
Tumblr media
The Exterminating Angel, Japan, R2017
“Every element is situated just right on this lovely little chirashi. The halftone effect was a nice choice. And if there’s a shade of grey that’s the best this is the one.” -Stan
Tumblr media
The Man Who Fell to Earth, USA, 1976
“Making a poster for Roeg’s bold, mulitgenre film is no easy feat and this poster captures how alien both the film and our world can be. It brilliantly uses a photo’s negative and a dynamic use of space and shape. You have the man, alien, planet and more importantly, an interest in all of those subjects, just from looking at the poster.“ -Nico
Tumblr media
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Germany, 1978
“This is really one of the weirdest movie posters I’ve ever seen and the guy that designed it we’re pretty sure is named Zorg.” -Stan
Tumblr media
Frogs, Japan, 1975
“This poster is much more exciting than the actual film, and I say that in the best way possible. The U.S. posters for Frogs have the amazing frog-eating-hand motif, but only the Japanese poster has this splendid and totally absurd stock image collage.” -Laura
Tumblr media
Othello, Poland, 1959
“Matching the elegance of Shakespeare’s pen and Welles’ haunting baroque imagery, this beautifully austere poster is a classic example of Polish design.”  -Nico
Tumblr media
The Man Who Skied Down Everest, USA, 1975
“I love the sans serif typeface and the photo of a guy actually skiing down Mount Everest.” -Stan
Tumblr media
To Catch a Thief, Denmark, R1960s
“The colors, printing, and graphic weirdness of this design totally make the poster. Totally amazing.” -Laura
Tumblr media
Dogville, Japan, 2003
“I like this a lot because it reminds me of the opening titles to Alien.” -Stan
Tumblr media
The 400 Blows, Hungary, 1960
“This artwork is totally unique to the Hungarian poster. Like many Eastern European posters, it has a sombre mood, but that makes the liberating end of the film all the more satisfying.” -Laura
More of our picks below.
Tumblr media
101 Dalmatians, Hungary, R1984
Tumblr media
2001: A Space Odyssey, USA, 1968

The Biggest Splash
Tumblr media
via Christie’s
David Hockney’s Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold this week for 90.3 million dollars, smashing the previous record for price paid for a painting by a living artist.
While it’s not the same imposing 7x10 foot size, the U.K. quad for the classic documentary A Bigger Splash features the same artwork and is in stock for $300. That's 300,000 times cheaper than the original. Not bad.
Tumblr media
Below, additional posters inspired by or featuring classic or fine art. You'll find these tributes at our gallery for quite a bit less than their inspirational counterparts. Assuming we can't all afford the Mona Lisa, that's pretty good news.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 1966 Czech poster for The Naked Eye by Josef Vyletal coopts the Mona Lisa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 1970 Czech poster for Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds is directly inspired by Max Ernst’s Attirement of the Bride.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Andy Warhol’s original art for Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Querelle and the polaroid he based it on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Franciszek Starowieyski’s interpretation of The Birth of Venus on his poster for the 1962 Bulgarian fantasy film Sun and Shadow.

It Comes to Life! The Mummy Set to Break Record
Tumblr media
Photo: Sotheby’s
“It comes to life!” — it’s a snappy tagline and it works, because you can say this poster is living a second life of its own.
One of three known copies of the 1932 U.S. one sheet for The Mummy starring Boris Karloff is poised to sell for over one million dollars at Sotheby’s this week, easily breaking the record for the highest amount ever paid for a movie poster.
The Guardian checked in with us about the auction and we’re excited. Posteritati owner Sam Sarowitz called classic Universal horror posters as “The golden fleece of movie posters,” noting that very few copies survived: “They were never released to the public, unlike other pop culture collectibles like baseball cards or comic books. They were just tossed away.”
Tumblr media
Photo: Handout/Reuters
The current record for price paid for a movie poster belongs to the 1927 German three sheet for Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, sold for $690,000 in 2005.
But $1,000,000+ is an altogether different game and we’re keeping a close eye. As Mr. Sarowitz says, “Hopefully the thing won’t shred once it’s sold!”
Auctions ends Halloween day.

Six Times Poster Artists Probably Didn't See the Film
These posters don't exactly fit the tone of the films they're for and we love it.
If we didn't know any better, we'd think The African Queen was a kids’ film, Close Encounters a stoner screwball, and Rebel Without a Cause a celebration of peace and love. And is this the Scenes from a Marriage we're thinking of? Or was it confused with Smiles of a Summer Night? Send us your own favorites of off-key art and we'll feature the best.

Women of the West.
Tumblr media
Yeehar. Anthology Film Archives kicks off their Women of the West series this weekend! Expect a bang from start to finish, with everyone’s secret favorite western — Johnny Guitar starring Joan Crawford — opening the series tomorrow night on 35mm. From Anthology:
Women have always been present in the genre as supporting figures: wives, sisters, preachers’ daughters, teachers, prostitutes, etc. But this series highlights Westerns that focus on a female protagonist, foregrounding the importance of women both to the Western genre and to the history of the American West itself. Spanning the early days of cinema all the way to the 21st century, and encompassing a number of films written and directed by women, this series aims to construct a narrative indicating the varied roles women played in shaping this country and more broadly the ways that the film industry has told stories of our western foremothers: the sharpshooters, hustlers, entrepreneurs, bandits, and all-around resilient women who worked as hard as men to maintain normalcy amid an inhospitable landscape.
August 31-September 16th. See the full calendar.
Above, the theatrical release U.S. one sheet for Kelly Reichardt’s Meeks Cutoff with art by Marlene McCarty. The film plays September 1st, 15th, and 16th.

B1. S-T-B. B2. Chi-ra-shi.
Tumblr media
STB Tatekan for Kurosawa’s Rashomon, 1965
Most countries produce movie posters in a few main standardized sizes, often based on the ISO 216 international paper size system. Japan follows this system and produces posters in the B1, B2, B3, B5 (or chirashi) sizes, as well as the STB Tatekan double panel, which is comprised of two B2 sheets. This covers a wide range of sizes — a chirashi is essentially a handbill, while an STB Tatekan is five feet tall.

Artist Spotlight: Andrzej Pagowski
Tumblr media
Cabaret, R1980s
They’re brutal, bold, and challenging. This pillar of modern Polish poster design begs you to try to look away, but in 27 by 39 inches of paper Andrzej Pagowski reminds us why we come back to cinema again and again. His works invite us to step inside and explore our own raw humanity, or at least to try the best we know how — in the company of film.
