190306: Started during some deskwarming time at work after lunchtime when bored out of my brain and falling asleep while eating gift ddeok xD my friend graciously chatting with me far past her bedtime on the other side of the world asked what the song was about: “show you what, Key???” And I smart assly answered: “how much you want me~~” and tbh I don’t think I was terribly far off the mark ^_^

I absolutely adore that this song plays with game terminology (which I used very liberally in my choice for English words, so don’t take it too literally) cuz it really does feel like a game, building and maintaining relationships; and even if it’s not a good way to play a game, Key’s style of honestly telling all is definitely a good method for at the least kicking off a relationship that you want to see flourish. (A lot of his songs have this blunt confidence and it’s so lovely~ now if only I had someone to attempt to even try this method on xD)

180502: one of my favorite songs came on shuffle in the middle of the night, so I impromptu translated it. A simple but earnest song. Level 3 because rhythmic and meaning based word choices were made; not too many subtleties that l thought had to be served raw with literalism (yeah.. not a really word). And the simple verse and chorus form lend itself to not too many complicated sentence structures!

Legit level 3 means I did not translate aiming to go lyrics by lyrics or even sentence by sentence, but uhh sentiment by sentiment (?). Therefore I would even dare say that these are my lyrics. Not the original ones. But I do try to convey the original meaning. And about 99% of the lines are direct parallels in terms of content. Yay for very basic verbal conjugations and short phrases structures!!

180419: who knows when I first realized I love ballads; maybe it’s from my introduction to classical music and hymns from a young age. I love all crazy combinations and mixes of music genres, but I have a very special spot in my heart for soft, simple, smooth arrangements. Sung SiKyung is the best. And this is probably my favorite song of his, even though it’s almost impossible to pick just one. It’s jazzy and tender and will probably be played at my wedding at least once. I’m polishing up this translation as a form of stress management. Level 2 +0.75 because the phrasing is conveniently aligned with the delivery and it kinda even rhymes a little.... o.O I totally did that on purpose.

180318: on a restless all-night trip to a friend far, far away, I occupied my insomnia with this song that I’m absolutely in love with since encountering it a few years ago within a story: simple repeated lyrics, soaring melodies, emotional harmonies! Level 3 -0.5  cuz I’ve got lots of colloquialisms and bypassing detailed grammar nuances and going for sung syllabic matching rather than literal order translation.

111017: back when Japanese music was available internationally on iTunes and songs were only 0.99$ per song, I bought my first BoA track, みんなの気持ち (Every Heart), because I had heard it as the InuYasha anime ending theme and fell in love and looked for everything about BoA and eventually delved deep enough to find it (having absolutely no knowledge of the Japanese language at the time)

180215: I realized this reminded me of some of my favorite uplifting ballads from Park JungHyun, and I’ve seen the BoA practice vid of her possibly pre debut singing Park JungHyun’s own debut song 나의 하루 (My Day)

180308: it’s been a rough few weeks since last post and since I’ve felt up for any creative output but I did this in record time for what I think is a solid comprehensive translation... level 2 minus 0.25 because I shifted some causal grammar into the effect clause in English and was a bit more figurative and poetic with all the hypotheticals in the chorus as well as employing punctuation where Korean likes to let the grammar do the distinguishing.

One thing I particularly liked, even if it is pretty heart-wrenching, is the way “If [I] could see you today” is written: it implies that such a happening is basically impossible. The same Korean grammar structure would be used for “if I had all the money in the world” and such phrases.

180219: One of the fastest translations that I’ve ever done and with which I have been satisfied! All credit and compliments go to my RnB Fairy Queen whose ultra shnazzy remix from her Cover Me album is linked above~ I honestly don’t remember when I first heard her.. perhaps in her featuring on 임재범 (Ihm JaeBeom)’s 고해 (Confession)? Either way, her unique voice, insane range, perfect control, and last but certainly not least slightly wild musicality captured my heart in seconds. (This is not quite a perfect Level 2 because I didn’t focus entirely on the grammar with blinders blocking out delivery, but there’s a lot more figurative interpretation and poetic license that I took with this particular translation compared to others!)

180104: Finally got a new phone (with more memory for more songs!) and downloaded the tunes by the dubbed Galaxy Girl that had been playing on loop during my 2017 spring semester in Seoul.

180203: Actually got around to listening to all the songs on the album (not just the ones I recognized from the radio) and fell in love with X Song’s unique sound blending and plaintive chorus. I searched for lyrics and didn’t find a wide variety of translations, so I wanted to give my own take. Challenge accepted! (Level 1.5 because some of the phrasing is just too unnatural literally in English and some poetic license was deployed)

I realize I totally said I wouldn’t be posting SHINee or anything recent on here but I also recently realized that for my first post I totally don’t care and tonight it really hit me. Seeing, hearing, feeling my boys on stage again after so long... I’m only proud and I would never deny it. I’m a time-traveler :3 it’s okay though, I’m used to time differences...

I made this blog at around 7:30pm; after a couple hours of sifting through brilliant user-made themes on tumblr, less than 24 hours after having conceived it in earnest thought, around 30 minutes before mandatory percussion practice, and spelled my intended URL wrong on the first go. This little fun fact blip is my first post because I’m a prolific procrastinating perfectionist and although I’m trying to convince myself my first post doesn’t matter because I can always add more or correct things or level up (as explained in my index), it’ll still be a little while before I post my first translation... I’ll optimistically aim for within 48 hours after I see the Black Panther in theaters with my parents.
