Special Olympics Georgia to Host 7th Annual Over the Edge Event at Overlook III on May 5 – Atlanta Business Chronicle

VININGS, Ga., May 4, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Special Olympics Georgia today unveiled details surrounding its upcoming 7th Annual Over the Edge event, which is set to take place at Overlook III in Vinings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018. 300-Home Development Coming Near Suntrust Park

VININGS, GA — A new gated community with 300 houses, townhomes and lofts is planned for two miles from Suntrust Park in Cobb County.

Housing in Reverie, which developer Ashton Woods describes as "a stone’s throw from downtown Vinings," and two miles from Suntrust, will be open for sale late this year, according to the company.

Located on Cumberland Parkway, the 19-acre community will feature parks, a community pool and a fitness area. Ashton Woods announced the new project this week.

Prices for Reverie have not yet been announced.

News of the planned community comes just days after Silverspot Cinema, a "boutique" movie-theater chain, announced plans to bring a cinema and bar to The Battery Atlanta at Suntrust Park. The 38,000-square-foot space will feature several screens, a full bar and in-theater dining.

In addition to newly released movies, Silverspot will host events including broadcasts of Broadway plays, musicals, rock concerts and opera. It will be located at 945 Battery Avenue SE, near the Comcast Xfinity store.

Fundraising auction to support the work of Vinings Historic Preservation Society

The Vinings Historic Preservation Society maintains The Pace House, c. 1865-1874, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A fundraising auction to support the work of the Vinings Historic Preservation Society will be hosted at SOHO restaurant in Vinings Jubilee.

A fundraising auction will be hosted to support the work of the Vinings Historic Preservation Society on Sunday, May 20, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. at SOHO Atlanta restaurant in Vinings Jubilee.

The event will feature a full dinner buffet, open bar, live music, silent auction and live auction.

Admission for VHPS members is $55. Admission for non-members is $75 and special event admission is $200, which includes two tickets and a “Trailblazer” level membership.

The nonprofit Vinings Historic Preservation Society was established by a great-great-granddaughter of early Vinings settler Hardy Pace in 1993 to help preserve the historic spirit and structures of Vinings. The organization maintains the Pace House, the Old Pavilion and the Yarbrough House, all on Paces Ferry Road in the heart of Vinings.

Masked gunmen, woman force their way into family’s home

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police are searching for a woman and two masked men who forced their way into a house and pointed guns at children.

The family who lives in the home in the Vinings Estate community in Cobb County said they were tricked into opening the door Sunday night.

Home surveillance video showed the woman at the front door claiming there’s an emergency.

The mother told WSBTV she and her boyfriend have no idea who the people were. She thought somebody needed help.

“Man, you know who I am. Stop playing with me. You know who I am. Stop playing with me,” the woman is seen on video saying. “’T’ already knows I’m pregnant. He already knows what’s going on. He’s supposed to be giving me money for the abortion.”

But “T” wasn’t home; he spoke to the woman with the doorbell app on his phone. His girlfriend was inside with her kids.

“I’m like fighting trying to get her out of the door. And it was too late. I see two men with masks and guns and everything. Push their way through,” said the girlfriend, who didn’t want to be identified.

The surveillance video didn’t show what happened inside the home but it recorded the commotion.

“Where’s the money at?” a man’s voice is heard on video.

A minute later, the two masked men with guns leave the house. There was a car waiting near the driveway.

“They pointed the guns at both of our heads,” the girlfriend said.

The victim said she and her kids escaped through the garage and ran for their lives.

“When we were in the backyard, we heard like gunshots, so I don’t know if they were shooting at us. Or shooting in the air,” the victim said. “I was just ducking, hoping my son wouldn’t get shot.”

The victim said the suspects made off with a $2 bill.

The couple claimed they don’t know the woman in the video but Smyrna police said it’s not clear yet if this was random or if there’s a connection.

The victims are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. They’re asking the public to call Smyrna police with tips.

WellStar more than doubles net income in Q2: 4 things to know

Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health System more than doubled its net income in the second quarter of fiscal year 2018 as the system held down costs and brought in greater revenue.

Here are four things to know about the nonprofit hospital’s most recent quarter, according to recent financial documents.

1. For the three months ended Dec. 31, WellStar recorded $824.8 million in revenue, up 7.8 percent from $764.9 million recorded in the same period a year prior. WellStar Executive Vice President and CFO Jim Budzinski told Becker’s Hospital Review the increases reflected an uptick in inpatient and outpatient admissions, as well as 10 percent growth in its WellStar Medical Group. The opening of Smyrna, Ga.-based WellStar Vinings Health Park in September 2017 contributed to the system’s growing outpatient activity.

2. The 11-hospital system kept expenses in check during the second quarter of fiscal year 2018. WellStar saw expenses increase 4.9 percent year over year to $768.6 million as salary and benefit and supplies costs grew.

3. WellStar improved its operating income in the second quarter compared to the same period a year prior. The system saw operating income grow 75.9 percent to $56.2 million, up from $32 million during the second quarter a year prior. WellStar pointed to patient volume increases and its continued integration of five hospitals bought from Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare in March 2016 as reasons for the improvement.

4. WellStar ended the second quarter of fiscal year 2018 by more than doubling its net income to $86.6 million, compared to $39.1 million reported in the same quarter a year before. The improved financial results reflect the results listed above, as well as favorable investment returns associated with WellStar’s cash reserves, Mr. Budzinski said.
