It's Real, Part 2: Shawn Michaels' Back Injury
In the previous entry in this series, it was established that the sport of professional wrestling is everything BUT fake. Despite having a predetermined ending, the risks that come with it are as real as can be. It’s no wonder why countless professional wrestlers undergo sport performance training in areas such as Vernon Hills to lessen the chances of them receiving significant injuries. But sometimes, these specialized regimens and safety precautions are not enough to ensure the performers’ protection. In fact, there are moments where freak accidents occur during the course of a beautiful wrestling match.
With that in mind, let’s talk about a wrestler who changed the landscape of professional wrestling. A man who is considered to have redefined the standards of the industry, opening the doors for smaller athletes in the land of giants. A performer who was idolized by many of the current professional wrestlers in our time who almost lost it all because of one injury. His name is the “Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels.
It all happened on January 18, 1998, at a pay-per-view event called Royal Rumble. At the time, Shawn Michaels, also known as HBK, was the reigning WWE Champion. He defended his title against The Undertaker in a casket match. Everything was going smoothly until both competitors went for a maneuver. The plan was for The Undertaker to throw him out of the ring without hitting the casket. Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication in timing and it resulted in HBK’s lower back striking the edge of the coffin. Despite that, he went on to complete the match and successfully retain his title. According to HBK, it was only after a few days where he started to feel a stabbing sensation in his back and weeks after that occurred, he found himself being unable to stand up.
In the face of overwhelming pain, he decided to wrestle in one more event: two months later in the main event of Wrestlemania 14, where he lost the WWF Championship to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
After this great match, it was learned that HBK suffered two herniated disks in his spine and crushed one completely. Because of this diagnosis, HBK underwent surgery where his L4 and L5 vertebrae were fused together using a metal plate, as well as to create more space between the L5 and S1 vertebral segment. Although he continued to appear occasionally on WWE programming in a non-wrestling capacity, many believed that his career was truly over — including him. So, how serious was the injury that caused him to retire prematurely? Let’s take a look.
The L4-L5 vertebrae and the L5-S1 vertebral segment (also known as the lumbosacral joint) are the lowest vertebrae in a person’s lower back. They are connected by a series of cartilaginous joints called vertebral discs. Essentially, these segments are responsible for supporting a person’s upper body and allowing one to twist and bend in multiple directions. Now, if these vertebral discs are herniated or crushed, it will lead to lower back and/or leg pain. These kinds of injuries would require a combination of surgery, medications, and sport performance training in places such as Vernon Hills for a person to fully recover.
With that said, it’s amazing how HBK was able to go on to finish one match and wrestle another considering the pain that he was in. It was a sad story to see one of the greatest ever to hang up his boots because of an untimely injury at the peak of his career. But, in an amazing twist of fate, he was able to go back to the sport that he loved the most.
After 4 and a half years of recovery and life as a retired professional wrestler, he made his return on August 25, 2002, at a pay-per-view called Summerslam to a standing ovation and rapturous applause. He was scheduled to wrestle an Unsanctioned Street Fight against his real-life best friend and the topic of the previous article, Triple H. He won the match and went on to be regarded as the best professional wrestler of all-time. 8 years later, he wrestled his final match at Wrestlemania 26 against The Undertaker, ending his storied Hall of Fame career.
As this story reaches its conclusion, it aims to achieve one thing: to tell the world that the risks involved with professional wrestling are as real as can be. Although it might seem ludicrous for many people, these wrestlers are always willing to go the extra mile just to entertain these fans. And to continue doing that, they constantly undergo sports performance testing in areas such as Vernon Hills to ensure that their bodies can withstand the rigors of their profession. With that being said, HBK’s story is truly an awe-inspiring one as it talks about his undying love for the sport. Because of what he represents, countless professional wrestlers aspire to become what he is and what he achieved throughout his time in the business. And for many, that is the exact reason why they look at him as the greatest professional wrestler of all time.
