What to Expect from Your Early Pregnancy Scan?
The Early Pregnancy Scan is the first ultrasound that we can perform when you’re expecting. Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about what to expect from this scan.
Tumblr media
When Can I Have an Early Pregnancy Scan?
You can book an Early Pregnancy Scan at The Birth Company any time between 7 and 11 weeks. You might have known you were pregnant for a while or only just have taken the test.
During these early stages of the pregnancy, you may already be noticing some of the symptoms that are caused by your hormones. You might be feeling more tired than usual, have sore breasts, notice some light spotting or be experiencing some morning sickness or food cravings. Your baby is also developing quickly, so we’ll even be able to listen to the heartbeat at your early ultrasound scan.
How is the Early Pregnancy Scan Performed?
The Viability scan is usually performed trans abdominally between 7 – 11 weeks. You’ll be able to see the images on the screen immediately and your Sonographer or Consultant will explain everything to you.
What Can the Early Pregnancy Scan Reveal?
Having your first ultrasound scan in the early weeks of pregnancy enables us to check that everything is proceeding as expected. We will perform various medical checks and measurements during the scan. The ultrasound can tell us:
How far along you are and when your baby is due
If it is a singleton or multiple pregnancy
Whether the pregnancy is viable
For example, we can rule out an ectopic pregnancy
What might be causing any symptoms such as bleeding
What Will I Receive After My Ultrasound?
During the ultrasound appointment you’ll be able to see your baby on the screen.  The sonographer or Consultant will be happy to answer any question you may have about your scan. At the end of the scan, we will give you:
Scan pictures to keep
An electronic link to your scan pictures and video clips
A full ultrasound report to add to your maternity notes
Should I Have an Early Pregnancy Scan?
Anyone can have an Early Pregnancy Scan between 7 and 11 weeks. You might want to have an early ultrasound just to see your baby as soon as possible or if you’re feeling at all anxious about the pregnancy. However, we particularly recommend this scan to:
anyone who is experiencing symptoms such as pain or bleeding
women with a history of ectopic pregnancy, early miscarriage or other issues
women over 35 or at higher risk of complications for any other reason
In most cases, the scan will confirm that all is well with your pregnancy and provide you with the first images of your baby in the womb.

What is Included in Your 3D/4D Ultrasound?
If you’re considering having a 3D ultrasound then you might be wondering what exactly will be included in your scan. If you have your 3D/4D ultrasound at The Birth Company, then you can expect to have a wellbeing scan included at the same time and to receive some amazing pictures and videos of your baby.
Having a 3D Ultrasound
The 3D scan appointment will be very similar to the other scan appointments that you’ve already had during your pregnancy. It is performed using the same kind of ultrasound equipment, but the images will be processed in a different way to produce 3D pictures of your baby.
The 3D pictures will appear on the screen so you will be able to watch your baby moving in real time during the scan. You’ll be able to see clear and realistic pictures of your baby. We’ll usually be able to see your baby’s face, although it can be tricky if your baby is in the wrong position.
We recommend booking your 4D ultrasound between 26 and 32 weeks as this is when we will be able to get the clearest 3D images of your baby’s face. Our scans are performed by experienced sonographers using the latest HD scanning technology, so we can provide you with the best quality pictures of your baby in the womb.
What You Will Receive After Your 3D Ultrasound
The images you see during your 3D ultrasound will be the most detailed pictures of your baby that you see before the birth. The scan appointment will be an amazing experience, but we want you to be able to relieve it afterwards and to share these beautiful pictures with your friends and family too. The pictures and videos you receive will be a lasting memento of this amazing period in your life.
After you have a 3D ultrasound at one of our clinics, you will receive:
A complete report on the scan to add to your maternity notes
Pictures of your baby, usually showing his or hers face in detail
A USB stick containing a video clip from the 3D scan
An electronic link to online images and videos from the scan that are easy to share with friends and family
If you have your 3D ultrasound at The Birth Company, then we will also perform a 2D wellbeing scan first. You’ll get a full report and pictures from this scan too. The wellbeing scan will check on your baby’s growth and development at the same time. Having these scans together will enable you to enjoy the experience of seeing your baby in 3D while also getting the reassurance that all is well with you and your baby.

Should You Have a Down Syndrome Test?
No one can tell you whether or not you should have a Down syndrome test during pregnancy, but what your doctor or sonographer can do is to give you the information you need to make your own choice. For example, we can tell you about the different types of Down syndrome test that are available and what the results might mean.
Tumblr media
What Tests are Available?
Several different types of Down syndrome test are available. Understanding what the tests involve and what they can reveal can help you to decide if they are right for you.
Nuchal scan: An ultrasound offered to all pregnant women, including a measurement of the nuchal fold that can tell you if your baby is a high risk of certain chromosomal abnormalities such as Down’s syndrome.
NIPT: Non-invasive prenatal testing, a blood test that assesses the chance of chromosomal abnormalities, it is usually recommended if the nuchal scan revealed that there might be a problem.
Amniocentesis or CVS: An invasive test that can be used to diagnose Down syndrome for certain if the other tests have suggested your baby is likely to be affected, but which poses some risks.
What Are the Risk Factors for Down Syndrome?
You may want to consider the chances of having a baby with Down syndrome when deciding whether to have the screening tests. Chromosomal abnormalities can happen to anyone by chance, but you are more likely to be affected if
You are older parents. The chances of chromosomal problems occurring is higher over the age of 35, but most babies born to parents over this age will be completely healthy.
You have had a child or pregnancy affected by Down syndrome before. You may want to talk to a genetic counsellor to understand the risks of it happening again.
Do You Want to Know?
As well as considering the facts, it is also important to think about how you feel and what you would do if your baby was affected. For example, if you would want to continue with the pregnancy anyway, you might not want to risk invasive tests to diagnose Down syndrome. However, you might still want to have the nuchal scan or NIPT so that you can be prepared to provide the care your baby will need.

Your Baby’s Development at the 4D Ultrasound Scan
If you are planning to have a 4D baby scan then the best time for the appointment will be between 26 and 32 weeks. You will get very clear pictures of your baby’s features and you may be able to tell how much he or she has grown since your last scan. Read on to learn about your baby’s development at this point in your pregnancy.
Tumblr media
26 Weeks
Baby is about 29cm long from rump to crown.
He or she will be taking breaths of amniotic fluid as the lungs develop.
You might start having Braxton-Hicks contractions around this time and your pregnancy symptoms may be more noticeable as your baby gets bigger and heavier.
27 Weeks
Baby will have reached about 33cm crown to rump and will continue growing taller and plumper.
He or she will be very active so you’re probably feeling lots of kicks and maybe even some little twitches as baby hiccups.
Baby’s brain is developing quickly and becoming very active.
You have now reached the third trimester of pregnancy.
28 Weeks
You should be more aware of the patterns in your baby’s movements by this time, so you’ll know how active he or she is throughout the day and night.
Baby is developing a layer of fat that will soon turn the wrinkly skin smoother.
The lungs are usually mature enough by now to breathe if baby arrives early.
29 Weeks
Baby weighs about 2.5 pounds but should triple in weight before birth.
It’s already quite a tight fit in the womb, but baby will still have lots of energy to move.
30 Weeks
Baby’s brain is developing rapidly.
He or she now has enough strength to grab hold of things (although there’s not much to practice on in the womb).
31 Weeks
Baby’s senses have all developed so he or she can see, hear, taste, smell and touch.
You probably feel very pregnant by now, so make sure you take it easy when you can.
Baby is likely to turn into a head down position around this time, but should still be visible for your 4D baby scan.
32 Weeks
Baby will drop down into your pelvis sometime between now and 34 weeks, which will prevent a 4D baby scan from getting a good view of the face.

What Health Checks Are Performed During a 3D Ultrasound?
A 3D ultrasound is not intended to be a health check for you and your baby, so it won’t provide as much medical information as your other pregnancy scans. However, it will be performed by a trained sonographer who will carry out some health checks and be on the look out for any signs of problems.
Tumblr media
Health Checks at Your 3D Scan
During the 3D ultrasound, the sonographer will perform some simple health checks:
Making sure that your baby is growing as expected.
Checking the health and position of the placenta.
Making sure that there is enough amniotic fluid.
Performing an umbilical artery Doppler scan to check on the blood flow through the umbilical cord.
Checking the stomach, kidneys and bladder.
Other Information the Scan May Reveal
In addition to the usual health checks that we perform during 3D scans, the sonographer may also be able to get some more information about your baby:
Sometimes the sonographer will spot something during the scan that needs further investigation, even if they aren’t looking out for it specifically. If this happens, the sonographer may recommend a 2D scan with a consultant.
In rare cases, a 3D ultrasound may be able to provide more information about an abnormality, for example by visualising problems with the development of the limbs or face.
If you haven’t found out your baby’s gender yet, you can learn it during the 3D scan if you wish. Make sure you tell the sonographer if you would rather not know so that we can try to avoid showing it on the screen.
What the 3D Scan won’t Tell You?
Although some health checks are performed during 3D scans and they can sometimes reveal important information about your baby, it is important to remember that this is not a complete medical ultrasound. The sonographer will not be performing all of the checks that you get during your usual ultrasound, such as looking for specific abnormalities or checking internal organs such as the heart and brain. The purpose of a 3D scan is simply to enjoy bonding with your baby and to get some amazing pictures of him or her in the womb. However, a wellbeing scan will usually be performed at the same appointment when you visit The Birth Company so that you get all of the health checks too.

When Should You Book Your Harmony Test?
If you’re considering the Harmony test for non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) then you may be wondering when will be the best time to book your appointment. You have a lot of flexibility in the timing as the test can be carried out throughout most of your pregnancy.
Tumblr media
When Can the Harmony Test Be Performed?
The earliest time you can have the Harmony test is at 10 weeks.
The test can then be performed at any time during the rest of your pregnancy.
When Will the Harmony Test Results Be Available?
It won't usually take more than 7 days for the test results to be ready.
Most people will receive their results in 3-7 days, but they may be returned sooner or later.
When is the Best Time to Have the Harmony Test?
You should consider the following when deciding when to have NIPT:
You might want to wait until after the nuchal scan (which can be performed between 11 week 5 days and 13 weeks 5 days) before deciding if NIPT is right for you. If your baby is at low risk you might not feel the need for NIPT, if there is a higher risk then the Harmony test can confirm it.
The Harmony test can be performed earlier than the nuchal scan, so you might want to have it at 10-11 weeks if you would rather not wait for the ultrasound, for example if you are at particularly high risk due to your age or family history.
You might decide to have the test later if any issues are detected in later ultrasound scans or even if you simply change your mind.
Amniocentesis isn’t usually performed after 20 weeks, so if you want to have the option of confirming the NIPT results with a diagnostic test you should keep this in mind when you book your appointment.
If the test reveals that your child is likely to have a severe disability and this is confirmed by amniocentesis then you may be able to arrange a termination after the usual 24 week limit. However, you will have more options if you arrange the test before this and it will be safer and easier to have an abortion earlier in the pregnancy.

What is the Harmony Test?
The Harmony test is a screening test that you may want to have during pregnancy, especially if your nuchal ultrasound scan has suggested that your baby may be at risk of a chromosomal abnormality such as Down’s syndrome. If you’re thinking about having this test, read on to learn more about exactly what the Harmony test is and how it is performed.
Tumblr media
Non-invasive Prenatal Testing
Non-invasive prenatal testing or NIPT is a special type of blood test that is able to screen for genetic and chromosomal abnormalities in a developing foetus:
Some genetic material from the placenta enters the mother’s bloodstream.
The DNA can be collected from a blood sample and analysed in the lab for specific genetic problems or to check for missing or extra copies of the chromosomes.
Since the placenta is genetically identical to the baby, the results will reveal whether the baby has any of the genetic problems that are being tested.
The Harmony Test
The Harmony test is one of the most popular types of NIPT in the UK:
Can be performed at any time after 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Screens for Down’s, Edward’s and Patau’s syndrome.
Can determine your baby’s sex and screen for sex chromosome abnormalities.
Is able to screen both twins if you’re expecting two babies.
Having the Harmony Test
If you decide to have the Harmony test while you are pregnant then you should expect the following:
A small sample of blood will be taken from your arm in the same way as for any other blood test.
At The Birth Company you will be able to have an ultrasound scan at the same appointment to confirm the pregnancy and check whether you are carrying more than one baby.
It will usually take 3-7 days for the Harmony test results to be ready (but the results may come back sooner or later in some cases)
Results are expressed as a probability that the baby is affected by each of the genetic abnormalities that were included in the test.
A consultant will help you to understand the results and advise you on any abnormalities that may be affecting your baby.

Why Does Endometrial Thickness Matter for IVF?
One of the ultrasound scans that we often perform for women who are undergoing IVF is the endometrial thickness scan. The scan is done in the middle of treatment, after the embryo has been created in vitro. During the endometrial thickness scan we will assess the womb lining to see if it is ready for an embryo to implant. We can then share this information with your fertility clinic so that the embryo transfer can be done at the optimum time.
Tumblr media
The Endometrial Lining
The endometrium is a specialised tissue that lines the uterus. It changes a lot over the course of a single menstrual cycle:
The endometrial lining is shed during your period.
Rising oestrogen levels then cause the endometrial lining to grow again.
The endometrial lining reaches its thickest point at ovulation, when a mature egg is released from the ovary.
The thick lining is maintained by high levels of progesterone and oestrogen.
When the hormone levels drop, the endometrium breaks down and is shed as your next period.
If you are pregnant, the thick endometrial lining will be maintained until the baby is born.
Why Endometrial Thickness Matters
The thickness of the endometrial lining determines is one of the factors that determines how easy it will be for an embryo to attach. The implantation of the embryo into the endometrial lining is essential for its survival. The connection it makes will form the link between mother and baby through the placenta.
Choosing the best time for embryo transfer will ensure that you have the highest chances of success for your IVF treatment. The endometrial thickness scan enables us to tell your fertility doctor when to transfer the embryo into your womb. If the embryos are transferred too early or too late in the cycle, the chances of successful implantation are lower.
The first endometrial thickness scan is usually scheduled for day 9 of your period.
Additional scans will be performed until the endometrium is at its thickest and most receptive.
The embryo can then be transferred into the womb at your fertility clinic.
Implantation should happen 1-5 days after the embryo is transferred if the treatment is a success.
This will usually be at around day 19-24 of your menstrual cycle.

More Parents to Be Offered NIPT
Non invasive prenatal testing has proven to be a safer alternative to amniocentesis, but it hasn’t yet been made available to expectant parents in all parts of the UK. The best way to get NIPT is still to visit a private clinic as you will have more choice of test types and more flexibility in when you can have NIPT. However, non invasive prenatal testing is gradually replacing more invasive techniques as the first option after an abnormal nuchal scan.
Tumblr media
NIPT in Wales
The latest development in NIPT is taking place in Wales, where the devolved government has just decided that it should be offered to parents when there is a higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities. The test will therefore be available for higher risk groups such as older parents or those who have had an abnormal nuchal translucency result during their ultrasound scan. NIPT can screen for a number of chromosomal abnormalities, including Down’s, Edward’s and Patau’s syndromes. The results can then be confirmed with the more traditional invasive tests such as amniocentesis and Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS). However, NIPT enables parents to avoid having the riskier invasive tests unless they are absolutely necessary.
Benefits of NIPT
Non invasive prenatal testing has some important advantages over the alternative invasive tests. It is much easier to give a blood sample than to have an amniocentesis or CVS. The non-invasive option also enables parents to avoid the risk of infections and miscarriage that are associated with the invasive tests. NIPT provides a simple, accurate and safer option for pre-natal screening that can enable some mothers to avoid having an invasive procedure. However, these tests aren’t right for everyone and it is essential that parents who are considering NIPT get the right advice from their doctors. It is important to understand what the tests can and can’t reveal about your baby’s health.

Who Should Perform Your Reassurance Scan?
If you are having a reassurance scan at The Birth Company, you can choose between having the scan performed by a sonographer and seeing a consultant instead. Reassurance scans are carried out for various reasons and these will influence which of our experts you should choose to perform your ultrasound.
Tumblr media
Sonographer
A sonographer is an expert in medical scanning who has undergone extensive training in the use and interpretation of ultrasound. The sonographer will be able to perform the scan and talk to you about the results. You might want to choose a sonographer for your reassurance scan if:
You are having the scan just for reassurance or to see your baby again.
You are having a healthy pregnancy with no complications.
If you choose to have your scan performed by a sonographer and you then need extra advice from a doctor, you will be able to meet with a consultant at the clinic. Our sonographers can usually answer all of your questions, but if there are any medical concerns about you or your baby’s health then it can be a good idea to speak with a doctor after the scan.
Consultant
The consultants who perform scans at The Birth Company are trained in obstetrics and gynaecology, which makes them experts in pregnancy and women’s health. Our consultants all have plenty of experience with ultrasound, but they also have medical training which enables them to provide additional care and advice when necessary.
It can be a good idea to arrange a reassurance scan with a consultant if:
You are having a high risk pregnancy, for example if you are expecting twins.
There are any complications with your pregnancy.
You want a second opinion after having a previous ultrasound.
You prefer to see a doctor for any reason.
If you would like to learn more about the people who will perform your scan, you can do so at The Birth Company website. Whether you choose a consultant or a sonographer for your reassurance scan, you will get to see how well your baby is growing and have another chance to see him or her on the screen. You will also have a chance to ask questions and talk to an expert about the scan.

Do You Have a Low Lying Placenta?
Your focus will be on your baby during the 20 week anomaly scan, but the sonographer or consultant who is performing it will also be taking a close look at the placenta. In addition to checking on baby’s growth and development, the scan is a chance to check on the health and position of the placenta.
Tumblr media
What is the Placenta?
The placenta is an organ that is created from the same fertilised egg that forms the foetus. It surrounds the baby and connects him or her to the womb lining. The placenta determines what can pass between mother and baby.
Why Does Placental Location Matter?
The placenta is attached to the baby via the umbilical cord, but it has a much larger attachment to the womb lining. The attachment can connect to different parts of the womb:
Anterior, to the front of the womb
Posterior, to the rear
Left or right lateral, to the sides
Fundal, to the top of the womb
The location of the placenta is influenced by where the initial implantation took place, but it can change over the course of the pregnancy as the womb expands and the baby and placenta grow.
Checking the Placenta During the Anomaly Scan
During the anomaly can, the sonographer will examine the position and appearance of the placenta to check for any signs of problems. The main issue to look out for is a low lying placenta. If the bottom edge of the placenta is lying too low in the womb it can make it difficult for the baby’s head to descend when it is ready to be born. It could also cause problems such as bleeding during later pregnancy or heavier bleeding during labour. If the placenta is covering the cervix then it is usually safer to have a Caesarean section. However, just because the placenta is low lying at the anomaly scan doesn’t mean it will stay this way. It may shift as it thins and the baby changes position towards the end of the pregnancy. The placenta can be checked again with another ultrasound closer to your due date. If the placenta remains low it is known as placenta praevia and you will need to discuss the options with your antenatal care team.

Why Are Ultrasound Scans So Important During Pregnancy?
Determine the Baby's SexHaving a prenatal ultrasound is exciting for parents because it gives them a first look at their baby before it’s born. But an ultrasound isn’t just exciting, it’s also an important and even essential part of prenatal care. From learning the expected birth date to detecting potential problems, ultrasound scans play an important role in pregnancy.
Tumblr media
Estimate the Baby's Due Date
The very first scan of a pregnancy, carried out at 8 to 10 weeks, is the one at which the baby's due date will be predicted. The prediction is made based on the size of the foetus, and is accurate to within 3 to 5 days when made at this stage of the pregnancy.
Knowing the due date may not be essential, but it's certainly useful information that helps a family plan for the birth and the changes it will bring. It also helps doctors determine if a baby is “overdue” and if there’s a need to induce labour at the end of the pregnancy.
Determine the Baby's Sex
If you want to know the sex of your baby before the birth, the typical time to find out is at your 18 to 20 week routine prenatal scan. And gain, this is definitely not an essential part of pregnancy, but learning the sex of the baby can be very exciting for expectant parents, as well as something that helps them bond with their growing baby.
Detect Potential Abnormalities
One of the most important purposes for ultrasound scans is to detect abnormalities in the developing baby. Approximately 1 in 50 babies are affected by a significant abnormality at birth, such as a heart defect or congenital syndrome. Around half can be detected by an ultrasound scan during pregnancy.
The importance of this just can't be overstated. Having some advance warning gives parents time to make choices about the pregnancy, and time to come to terms with having a child who may have special needs. It also means that the child will get essential medical care that may be vital to their well-being after birth, which they would not get had the problem not been detected.
Assess the Health of the Pregnancy
An ultrasound is also important because it helps determine if there are any general issues that might affect the health of the pregnancy, such as:
The location of the placenta. If the placenta partially or fully covers the cervix, this is a risk factor for bleeding during childbirth and may require a caesarean.
The length of the cervix. In general, the shorter the cervix is, the higher the risk of going into labour early.
The amount of amniotic fluid in the gestational sac. This is important because there are potential health risks for the mother and baby if there’s too much or too little amniotic fluid.

What are 3D and 4D Ultrasounds?
How do 3D Ultrasounds Work? Conventional ultrasounds give you a two-dimensional view of your baby before it's born. A 2D ultrasound is a flat image, just like a picture. 3D and 4D ultrasounds take it a few steps further, to give you an incredible three-dimensional view of your growing baby. With 4D ultrasound, you can even see your baby move!
Tumblr media
How do 3D Ultrasounds Work?
Traditional two-dimensional ultrasounds work by using a transducer to detect the sound waves that are emitted by different types of tissue. The transducer feeds information about sound waves to a computer ultrasound unit, and the information is used to create an image.
Three-dimensional ultrasounds work in a similar fashion, but the transducer uses slightly different methods to detect sound waves, to produce a 3D image. With the third dimension of depth added in, you can see your unborn baby in much greater detail.
4D Ultrasounds Add Movement
Ultrasounds produce still images, but by turning a sequence of still images into a video clip, it's possible to create a 3D ultrasound with the additional dimension of time—allowing you to see your baby moving. If your scan is taken at just the right time, you might even see them smiling or yawning!
What are the Benefits of 3D and 4D Ultrasound?
For most people, a 2D ultrasound is sufficient to ensure their baby is healthy and is developing normally. A 3D or 4D ultrasound typically isn’t needed to diagnose or monitor a baby’s development.
The main benefit of having a 3D or 4D ultrasound is that parents are able to see their unborn baby in such detail—much greater than that which is possible with a 2D ultrasound. Many parents say they feel closer to their baby after seeing them in 3D, and that the 3D ultrasound experience helps them bond with their child.
Another advantage is that some pregnant women say that seeing their baby in three dimensions gives them more motivation to stay fit and healthy during pregnancy. And for fathers-to-be, this kind of ultrasound is particularly important in that it helps them a bond with their unborn child, in an entirely new way. This is a wonderful opportunity for an expectant father, as it’s typically the mother who is more involved with the pregnancy, and who has a greater connection with the unborn child. With 4D ultrasound, fathers have the chance to form a stronger emotional bond with their child before it’s born.
3D and 4D High Definition Ultrasound at The Birth Company
The Birth Company offers 4D high definition ultrasound scans in London, for parents who want a scan that offers something extra special. For your convenience, we’re open every day and offer next-day appointments.
