i️ was i️n class yesterday and my history teacher banged his hand on my desk, not to be rude (i️ love him) but he was trying to exaggerate his point. It sucked because it scared me and i️ almost felt like i️ was gonna have a panic attack, but my friend helped me calm down when she realized i️ was breathing heavily

My friends are starting to worry

I’ve been rather distant lately, i have family court the day after my birthday (may 29th) and it’s freaking me out. No worries, i’m trying to be more energetic but i can’t sleep (it’s 3 am) and i cry all the time. I can’t decide if i wanna talk about my situation with them or not…

Let me tell you about Impostor Syndrome.

Or as my dad likes to call it “In Pasta Syndrome” While I can make this a lecture about science and how the brain does shit to make you feel inadequate or beneath others blah blah blah, I’m just gunna say how it feels in the most personal of terms. When you are successful at something, there sometimes will be a voice in the back of your mind, asking “Are you sure you deserve this? Look at everyone else!” Then, without realizing it, you are looking at everyone around you and comparing yourself to them. Whether it be their looks, personality, accomplishments, whatever; you are seeing where you land alongside them. Impostor Syndrome is when you feel like you’re being an impostor. Clever name, right? It makes you feel that you don’t belong there, you don’t deserve the things you were given, and you are a waste of everyone’s time because there are others who are better. Many creators go through this and never express aloud their experiences with this syndrome, but this thought process is common and VERY heavy on the mind. It can ignite anxiety, depression, and even push so far as to make someone question “Why bother?” I was blessed to not ever feel like this until it slapped me HARD. It wasn’t because of anyone, it wasn’t because God hated me, it was because of a circumstance that just happened out of nowhere. A circumstance did this and circumstances CAN do this without any warning. It’s never the fault of a person or a thing, but a matter of a situation that puts you in that mindset. You can be standing next to a hero, but it’s not the hero’s fault that you may feel inadequate standing by them. It’s just because you happened to stand there when the thought occurred. What a lot of people don’t understand is that being a victim of impostor syndrome does not equal jealousy. It’s a mindset of it’s own, a monster that tells you you’re not enough and that you will NEVER be enough. You can do all of the good in the world, be objectively and subjectively the best in your field, but Impostor Syndrome brings you to that inky darkness where you question your very existence. Logic doesn’t always make it go away. Comfort doesn’t always ease it. It’s just a shitty mentality that not a lot of people break through. So the next time you see someone get mad or frustrated at someone or something and they express how they feel like they won’t compare, don’t automatically assume they are jealous of that thing they are comparing themselves to. It may be a case of impostor syndrome and what they need is a little support and some time to recognize that they are worthy of the work they do, no matter what the circumstance is.
