The Communications Breakdown Project Completed!
The purpose of this piece for me was to create a sculpture that matched the radial symmetry of the original pattern itself. So a bucket hat was the result I came up with and a mix of my second interest which is fashion. The are also four different sizes of patterns to get a variety of details as the patterns get smaller. I also wanted a pop of color that had meaning so I added the three primary colors on the side of the hat to represent that any color can be a part of this sculpture.

Francis Picabia Paper
Francis Picabia, an influential artist who rose up during the emergence of Cubism and departed after leaving an impact on the world’s art by being a key figure in the Dada movement. Picabia was a French painter, designer and writer who was born in Paris on January 22, 1879 and died on November 30, 1953. The start of his journey began in a wealthy household with his parent where Picabia was surrounded by expensive art due to his uncle being an “art lover and collector” (Art Story) Other family members were also involved in art, such as his grandfather who was an amateur photographer which was another influence that inspired him to become an artist. A little time later in 1895, Picabia attend École des Arts Decoratifs which other great artists also attended, such as Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. He studied there for two years and then transferred to Fernand Cormon’s studio where he worked for the next four years. While attending these schools and studios he was able to pick up, learn and hone new skills, such as traditional water coloring. Water coloring was the main art form that transitioned Picabia in the direction of Impressionism and towards the rest of his career. Soon after, in 1905 Picabia “his first solo show… at the Galerie Hausmann in Paris. The show exhibited 61 landscape paintings and received substantial acclaim.” (Art Story) Even though the show was a great success and could have been a potential future for Picabia, he would later desert this style and transitioned “towards more avant-garde styles, including Fauvism.” (Art Story) But finally after years of working on fauvism paintings, Picabia would switch to Cubism and he would paint from his “memories and experiences rather than drawing inspiration from nature” (Art Story) This decision would set him up for the rest of his life and this style would be the reason we remember him for in the modern day. Throughout Picabia’s 74 years of life, he has had many art works and influences that have made him into the artist he was and is. Some people that influenced him would be Camille Pissarro during his early life and then Pablo Picasso during his later life. Both of his influences show us how and why Picabia’s artworks include human faces with very distinct lines and outlines.
I personally find Francis Picabia and his artworks interesting due to his switch to cubism which I find particularly pleasing to the eye. Picabia’s version of cubism allows the audience to separate each element of the piece and appreciate it. Even though there are lines that separate elements, the elements are cohesive enough that they work off of each other to enhance the whole art piece. An artwork that I find to be my favorite of Picabia’s is Atrata (1929). Atrata was estimated to go for “£1,500,000 - 2,000,000” (Alamy) in 2019 and rightfully so. The piece consists of a woman centered on the painting with transparent skin to leave room for Picabia’s version of cubism with other elements hidden behind the woman. The painting is full of hand in many sizes and sharp gestures so they can enhance the delicate form of the hand of the woman. But humans aren’t the only thing in the painting, there are also animals, such as a goat and a bird. The goat and bird are a great addition to the piece due to them meaning two different things. The bird symbolizes the beauty and gentleness of the woman and the goal behind the skin represents the strength and determination that she has inside her. The color scheme of the painting is also a nice touch and it allows Picabia to draw the audience into key elements. The painting is mostly brown but elements such as the lips and eyes are vibrant with reds and whites. Overall, this painting in my opinion is a diamond compared to his other works and it really shows how his influences and skills worked together to create is wonderful and elegant work of art.

The Stuart Davis Project Completed!
The purpose of my pieces is to take inspiration from Stuart Davis and his style to make paintings that are similar to his in both message and idea. The color schemes I chose were meant to be complete opposites of each other. The colors are supposed to represent day and night with streetlights that have their respected colors. I also put the word “panic” with a big “X” behind it to represent the phrase “don’t panic.” Also at the bottom of the piece, there is a gun shotting a bullet to be an exact counter to the “don’t panic” message. In this piece I changed some objects from both painting but they were changed into specific items and colors to match the entire theme of the project.

Prem Patel: Stuart Davis
I really like Stuart Davis' art because of how he is able to fill up the frame with shapes from his imagination. He also explains his methods very well, to the point where the audience is able to make sense of his ideas even if his work looks like madness. He also has a way with colors that works for him and that compliments his other piece as well. His chaotic and random energy is fantastic combined with the way he explains it.

The Positive Negative Project Completed!
The purpose of these art pieces is to show the audience how everyday environments can be taken and constructed into entirely different works of art. My works take several traced elements from the original image and assembles them into two works of art that are related to each other in a storytelling sense. When tracing the image, you can see how each element takes up the space and the distinction between positive and negative space. One work is of a horse on a desert landscape representing the country and cowboys. The other work is of a grey alien with very abnormal body parts. These pieces work together and end up telling the story of cowboys and aliens.

Prem Patel: Laylah Ali
Laylah Ali has style like no other and that differentiates her from other artists. Some of Ali's works, even though it's 2D, gives the illusion of 3D and some works gives a very flat look. I like how she has a purpose to her art, such as race relations. She doesn't let her platform get wasted and uses it to its fullest potential. She also uses muted and stark colors in order to really get her message to the center of attention. Most artists wouldn't be able to work with Ali's style but it works for her and she is able to use it and take it to its limits.
