Ari Lennox, The Soul Rebels, and the Unity Mural
1. Ari Lennox’s style of music and silky voice were entirely new to me. I have somewhat of a varied taste in music, but R&B had not been a part of it until now. By the end of her concert, I found a new appreciation for the artistry needed for this style, and will probably listen to more of it in the future.
2. My favorite display would have to be the Unity Mural. The thought of this beautiful painting being created in the midst of other art during last year’s NextNOW Fest is amazing. The colors and twining vines reflect its message that all humans are inherently connected.
3. Jazz music, although originating in New Orleans, is thought of as a marriage of African and European music. This combination would never have been possible if migration had not occurred, allowing cultures to blend. The Soul Rebels, being from New Orleans, are a direct result of this process, which showed in their infectious musical energy.
