“That person is only holding you back.”
questions / comments. accepting.
“… Is it about the Upper Moon Two?” A cold, disinterested tone is the response to the ‘concern’. Muzan’s gaze never leaves the tubes he has been experimenting with for a few hours; there are much more pressing matters, and yet Akaza deems it appropriate to bother him about something so trivial and useless. “I am aware of your feuds with him. Is there anything else?”
Not a sliver of attention is given to the other man for a minute or two: mercy it is, for Akaza could have excused himself and left. … There was no point in asking the last question anyway: Muzan knew there was nothing else that warranted unnecessary distractions. As amiable as he was to Akaza — if such a word could ever be used to describe Muzan’s disposition, — sometimes the younger demon thought too bold of himself; and although Muzan is not fond of Douma either, this way of dealing with a problem is not acceptable.
     “If not…”
A clanking sound follows right after his words: the last tube takes its place on a stand, and will not move from it anymore — for today, at the very least. Time’s up.
Tumblr media
     “A. ka. za.”
Despite his calm and collected appearance, anger seeps into each syllable, the intonation alone sending shivers down the spine. “If you indeed believe that he is ‘holding me back’, then prove yourself. Are you not the Upper Moon Three? If your claim is true, then you will have no trouble claiming the spot of the Upper Moon Two — … unless you cannot do so? Might this be your limit?..”
“I hoped for better results from someone like you. I’m disappointed.”

before i do the asks i want to elaborate on one thing that’s in my about. i’m sorry if i don’t word myself clearly enough bc i’m nervous to post this,,,
basically, why i have him listed as gender-neutral. to put it very short, after you live like a millenium and realize you can assume any form with ease and literally become a cocoon of flesh gender wouldn’t really apply to you, now would it? yeah, he was born male, but with time it just stopped to matter. he defaults to his male form but in my opinion it’s not uncommon to see him as a woman (or a child). it’s still muzan though, the outer form changes literally nothing. we’ll have to see how anime treats it, but manga mentions that it’s still his voice when he appears as a woman though. it’s also worth noting that despite the fact that he became a demon before 20, he is canonically said to look mid-late 20s. also, while it may be just the art style, muzan looks almost identical in these two panels.
as for pronouns, it doesn’t matter either. if your muse wants to call him whatever, call him whatever. i personally use he/him when referring to muzan in general, although i switch to she/her if muzan in question looks like a woman.

❝  I WANTED TO MAKE THE PITIFUL PEOPLE HAPPY AND HELP THEM.  ❞
did someone order one horrible demon? no? well either way i’m presenting you with DOUMA aka UPPER MOON TWO of KIMETSU NO YAIBA!! he’s a whole meal of villainous and playfulness, with a tragic backstory as a side dish. ( sadly his ice powers are unable to make snow cones for dessert. ) anyway, if you’re interested: LIKE or REBLOG this post and i’ll check out your blog!  just make sure to read the rules beforehand!

quick hc so i don't forget it: muzan's handwriting is quite neat and extremely tiny; it's been shown that's he's right-handed. his handwriting looks very much like technical lettering, and can be easily read. usually on a lined paper he could successfully fill one line with two lines of text and still have it be discernible. (do note that im talking about languages like english, im sadly unaware of how it'd be in japanese)

infodump on stuff i’ve been thinking about past few days
one thing that really gets me with muzan is that his end goal is literally ‘to live’. like, he’s been seeking that damn spider lily for a thousand years and has explicitly stated that he’d rather not spread his own kind (but did so anyway just in case a sun resistant demon appeared). he legit just wants a healthy body to exist in and it’s a bit sad if you really think about it?? like, what is he gonna do after he achieves his goal? simply exist? not even live? i can’t really think of what he’d want after he finally gains his true immortality: although probably it’s been hinted at with some chapters.
that said, an obligatory ‘don’t even think he’s nice’ is needed because yeah the desire itself is harmless, the way muzan goes about it is definitely not the best thing in the world. i doubt that he can survive without actually eating humans (like tamayo)  because he is the original one and all others are just turned humans; but like, if he wasn’t okay with it he could have probably found some alternative. but that’s not a problem for him because, as i will not stop saying, muzan has always been a cruel person, even as a human.
which also brings me to the point that i feel like it’s very crucial to understand that muzan was originally a human, but not in a ‘oh he actually has feelings’ way (well he does but they’re not nice) — instead, it’s ‘his end goal is something born from human frailty and that while he has become rather inhuman after a thousand of years he understands what being a human is (in a way)’. like, ‘being human’ is not always about having humanity, it’s also about the faults and weaknesses humans have.
also a random thought but if you read closely you’ll see muzan studying books and even experimenting with different chemicals and writing the results down which most likely suggest he’s at least intelligent enough to be able to keep up with science and that he does everything just to finally get his wish. it’s interesting because while he’s very old he still keeps up with all the new stuff, which is shown by him having a rather fancy suit during current events (in contrast to him wearing traditional clothes in flashbacks).
another thing i want to bring up is his fear of death. if you think about it, most of his actions that were shown in the manga support this theory. his whole thing with getting a sun-resistant body, him killing lower moons because they stopped being useful to him, his talk with upper moons and mentioning the devotion. it honestly feels like it’s the driving factor behind many of his outbursts, aside from ‘bad temper’.
and yeah, he has a very bad temper: muzan gets angry incredibly quick, but also seems to calm down just as fast. it’s something to take note of when interacting with him because even the slightest remark can snowball into a huge fit of rage: it’s like you absolutely have to walk on eggshells near him, even if you’re the upper moon. that, together with his desire for absolute effectiveness of everything, almost makes him a perfectionist who likes everything to be done perfectly, or he will throw a fit.
there’s also the pronoun thing but that’s something for later; but like, it seems like he does not have an enlargened ego. i still need to dig up more information on that.

* (  REIGN /  SENTENCE PROMPTS.
These may have been edited for clarity or length or to better apply for roleplaying.
❛ How many people have you killed? ❜
❛ History is a strong word. It was more of a… dalliance. ❜
❛ Have you ever wanted something so much that the fear of not getting it makes you wonder if you ever should have wanted it at all? ❜
❛ I don’t want to live without you and after this I won’t have to.  ❜
❛ No one will ever keep us apart again. ❜
❛ Men in general like to win. ❜
❛ Well, your taste in men always did leave something to be desired. ❜
❛ In the darkest of times you were my conscience. ❜
❛ The more we try to help each other, the more harm we do. ❜
❛ I lose everyone I love. ❜
❛ What odd turns our lives have taken. ❜
❛ I don’t give my heart or give up easily. ❜
❛ You have to admit, your fate does have a sense of humor. ❜
❛ I need to forget a ridiculous, childish idea that I could love someone, they could love me, and nothing else mattered. ❜
❛ There is always risk. At least when you love someone it’s worth taking. ❜
❛ I never said I was a good man, but one can receive good advice from a bad person.❜
❛ Love is never simple. Not that I’m any expert. ❜
❛ Are you wearing mink-lined boots? ❜
❛ Well if I have to run I want to look good doing it. ❜
❛ We were supposed to dance under the stars. ❜
❛ Maybe there is no magic but what we make for ourselves. ❜
❛ If the price is my life, I will give it. ❜
❛ I can’t bear to think about a future anymore, not without you. ❜
❛ What good is right or wrong if you’re dead? ❜
❛ Men don’t like taking orders from women. ❜
❛ And real love never fades, not truly. ❜
❛ Just know whatever happens, this is not the end I dreamed for us. ❜
❛ Do not test my power and do not tempt my fury. ❜
❛ If I’m as responsible as you say, I will never forgive myself. ❜
❛ I will spill blood to defend what’s mine. ❜
❛ Men forget, that woman have ears. ❜
❛ Duels only lead to dead men, not respect. ❜
❛ I am trying to be better! ❜
❛ You’re a monster. ❜

❛ I opened my heart to a liar. ❜

one thing that always confused me is the way muzan was treated by ubuyashiki in chapter 137. i get that demon slayers are good guys and demons are bad, but like... to me it seemed a bit too much? (if we don’t count it as an attempt to lure him closer)
what i’m talking about is ubuyashiki ‘understanding’ muzan’s dream of being eternal / indestructible. it isn’t clear if ubuyashiki knows about muzan’s past (other than him being an ancestor), but equating thoughts and physical eternity is just weird to me. why does ‘i will not forgive muzan’ thought exist? because muzan exists. because he became a demon (involuntary, might i add) and he chose to continue that life. what i’m saying is, that because there is ‘evil’, there also must be ‘good’ to oppose it. and the ‘good’ most of time is rooted in emotions and thoughts.
now, we don’t know the full backstory and all details, but where ubuyashiki is wrong is that ‘thoughts are eternal’, and that they are indestructible. there is one little problem: if there is no one to remember the person, then it is as if they never existed. there was absolutely no incentive for someone to remember muzan, to carry the legacy of his existence — not that he wanted that anyway.
he was terminally ill, and he was promised a cure: who would not take this opportunity? most people would want to try any possible options before giving up. however, that cure happened to be with side effects. and yet, muzan not only killed a doctor when he got angry that cure didn’t work, but also decided to live the new life of having to feed on humans — either he really wanted to live on, or was devoid of morals from the very beginning. most likely both.
and there is a line: ‘this connection to human thought is something you probably can’t understand, muzan. because you and your kind will cease to exist once you die, right?’
it has been established 10 chapters earlier that muzan does not care about ‘his kind’ at all: he used it to basically engineer a demon that would be resistant to sun. and as i’ve said earlier, there is literally no reason to remember muzan? like of course muzan does not get it? all muzan wants is just, living eternally. that’s it. like, not dying.

          META 001. / on early life.           (27 / 08 / 19; 171; spoilers up to ch. 137)
A quick dump of information relating to research I did on Heian era and how it plays into Muzan’s backstory. (to be updated in future)
Given that the manga’s set in 191X, and that it has been said that Muzan has existed for at least a thousand years, it is only reasonable to assume he was born around 800s, probably the latter half of the century. As for his social status, it is unknown, although most likely it is ‘not poor’ for being able to afford a doctor, which seemed to be restricted to higher upper class (the information is very sparse on it).
It is also known that he would not last to live till 20; it may seem young by today’s standards, but apparently during Heian era life expectancy was around 30 years for males, making Muzan’s a 2/3rd of it. In modern terms, if we are to assume life expectancy of 70 years, that would be analogous to around 45 years — still a relatively young age. Most likely he had been turned into a demon at 18 or 19 years old, although his current appearance does not suggest it (it has been described as late twenties).
As for the disease, it has not been named, but we can assume it is most likely the one Ubuyashiki is plagued with: it has been stated that Muzan is a distant relative to him, and that priests blamed Muzan for the genetic disease. If not, it might be tuberculosis, as it amounted to around 50% of deaths during Heian era, although, cases of different respiratory diseases probably fell into the same category.
There is also evidence that Muzan’s bad temper has always been present, it had simply worsened after becoming a demon. Because nobody kills a doctor that gave you treatment, even if treatment did not work.
