“You’ll get that,” he replied with a smile. He cared very much for his older cousin, and wanted nothing but the best for her. “I’m confident. You’re a good woman and your fiance would be an idiot not to recognize that.”

Katerina laid back in his arms. There was nothing that could touch her if Atticus held her. She drew back reluctantly and stood up. “Let’s go to bed. I need to get my mind off this,” she pleaded.

Atticus nodded. “That’s a good idea,” he said softly and took her hand, bringing her into bed. He kissed her forehead when he settled under the covers. “Try to sleep, liebling. I love you. Everything is going to be alright.”

Katerina looked up at him with wet eyes. “What are we going to do? What’s going to happen?” It felt like she was once again slapped with her own mortality. 

Tatiana and Pippa. What if they had been hurt?

She knew he didn’t have all the answers. He could only keep her safe. 

“What we’re going to do is keep you safe. That is my primary concern. Whatever it takes, nothing is going to happen to you or your loved ones.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead, trying to reassure her that in the end, everything would be alright.

While she knew the Paragons wouldn’t stand for it, it seemed like the humans were next to be targeted. First the vampires and the werewolves, now the humans. Katerina couldn’t understand. She knew she was safe with her husband above all else, but she would never be truly safe while human. 

“I’m scared, Atticus,” she whispered, voicing her fears for the first time ever.

Atticus pressed a long kiss to Katerina’s forehead. “I know, liebling.” He could hear her heartbeat running out of control. “But if you think I’m going to let anything happen to you, you don’t know me very well.” He cupped her face in his hand. “If anything happens, Tatiana and Pippa can stay with us too, if it would make you feel better about their safety, unless their fiances are as protective of them as I am of you.”

Katerina hadn’t allowed herself to cry since she arrived to the castle, but now, she wept for the innocent lives stolen. She wept for the uncertain future. Fear for her parents’ safety, the unknown of humankind’s mortality. She buried her face into Atticus’ chest, clinging to his shoulder.

He didn’t know what to say. He knew that there was nothing he could say that would make her feel better. He could not fix this. He couldn’t bring those people back to life. He couldn’t stop the impending war. All he could do was hold his wife close to him and let her cry.

“They said these marriages would bring peace,” she whispered, staring at the screen. She sat, unmoving for a few moments until she forced her red-rimmed gaze up to her husband. “Another war is coming, isn’t it?”

Fifty innocent people were murdered, slaughtered by werewolves and vampires. Confirmed. Katerina was two, almost three when the original war raged in 1996. 

“All those people.”

Atticus pulled his wife, his human wife into his arms. “I know...it looks like there might be.” It would be stupid to deny the obvious. More and more people were dying, the monarchies wouldn’t stand for it. Something was brewing. 

“I know, my love, I know...”

“I’ve spent 2,000 years alone Atticus” said Renata coldly. “You’d be starved for attention too, after that.” She sighed. “But, of course, you’re too brainwashed by my sister to see my side.”

“I’m not brainwashed by anyone. I am a grown man capable of making my own decisions.”

Katerina reached up and placed a kiss on his lips. “I love you, too, farm boy,” she returned. She walked back into the bedroom and tightened her towel when she caught sight of the news.

Fifty humans dead in an attack in town. Vampires and werewolves suspected. 

She wasn’t sure what happened, only that she sank on to the floor in shock. 

Atticus smiled, only to frown with worry once he watched Katerina sink to the floor. He rushed to her side. “Katerina? Katerina what happened, what’s the matter?” But when he turned his head to see the news on the tv, he knew immediately why his wife was in distress. “Fuck,” he whispered.

Katerina shook her head and leaned forward to stand up in the tub. “Come on, let’s go to bed for real. If you’re good tomorrow, I might let you watch me do yoga again,” she teased with a wink as she wrapped a plush towel around her lithe body, hooking it in the front. 

Atticus chuckled but followed suit, getting out of the tub and wrapping a towel around his waist. “As you wish,” he teased with a smile. A good night’s rest would be good for her, though, after the stressful events of the day.

Katerina’s eyes rolled back further. “You are the worst. Why do I love you?” She nudged him with her shoulder playfully. 

“Beats me,” he teased with a laugh. “But there’s no turning back now. You’re stuck with me for the rest of your life. We should probably get out of this bath though.”

Her eyes rolled back at his words as he kissed her shoulder. “I will divorce you,” she returned, though she would never. “I can’t get an annulment, but I will figure out something.” She loved Atticus. There was no skirting around that. 

“No you won’t,” Atticus chuckled, keeping her pulled close. “You would never divorce me. You love me. And we’re going to live happily ever after,” he mused.

“Well, we’re married. I’m sure they can make room,” she commented. She relaxed in the sanctuary of his arms. Being with him like this forever, it was…happiness. She felt happy with him. He was her safe haven. Every day, she was grateful she gave him a chance because she couldn’t picture any part of her life that made sense before until she bumped into him in that hallway. 

He smiled, pressing gentle kisses to her shoulder, "That we are, Mrs. Gotha," he said softly. There was something so beautiful about that. It made him feel almost giddy. "I love you, and we are married," he teased softly.

Atticus chuckled humorlessly and shook his head. “So you disrupt my wedding because you think we’re weak because of something none of us have anything to do with. I see. You prove nothing with your actions, Renata. Only how starved for attention you are. I’m sorry you feel the need to disrupt the happiness of others to make yourself feel bigger.”

Renata was relaxing on a couch in one of the castle’s living rooms. She was watching some TV show about life in prison that she found rather entertaining, mostly because it involved lesbians. After nearly 2,000 years on the run, she found she was becoming quite spoiled and lazy while in Colivie. Just as the episode was about to reach its climax, someone came and stood right in front of her. Completely blocking her view. Hitting the pause button, she looked up and said “Something I can help you with, cousin? I was enjoying that, you know.”

Atticus knew what his fiance was planning, but he couldn’t stand by without saying something to his cousin himself. He crossed his arms over his chest. “Whatever fight you have with your sister happened centuries before I was even an idea. So I have to know why on earth you felt the need to drag me into your fight while also insulting my bride.”

“Oh I can guarantee it,” she agreed as she leaned into him. This was the first time in a long time that she felt so…relaxed. A hot bath scented with jasmine, the company of her husband, and it felt like they were the only two people in the world. “I love you.”

“Remind me to make sure I’m not around when you break this news to them,” he laughed. They were in their own little bubble, Katerina and Atticus. And despite everything that happened, all of the bad things...those things had brought him to the great love of his life. And so he couldn’t fault them. “I love you too,” he smiled.

Katerina shimmied out of her sweatpants and leaned back into his chest as he kissed her shoulders. “You’re quickly becoming my favorite person, you know.” She leaned her head back against his shoulder, moving to kiss his jaw.

“I think Tatiana and Pippa will have something to say about that,” Atticus chuckled as he sank himself into the water and pulled Katerina into his lap. He started giving her a shoulder massage, hoping to relieve some of the tension given to her from the ball.

“I’ve trained you well, husband,” she returned, fingers dangling under the water until she found the perfect temperature. She plugged the tub and dropped in one of the bombs she had bought a while ago at one of the shops in town. “You’re invited for this bath, unless you’re content to watch me like a voyeur.” Katerina pulled the baggy T-shirt over her head and caught sight of the red marks the bones of the corset left on her ribs. Stupid corsets, she thought.

Atticus smiled and started stripping out of the rest of the clothes he had put on for comfort. “You know, as much as I do so love watching you, I think I’ll join you if only to give you a well-deserved shoulder rub.” He came up behind her and pressed gentle kisses to her shoulders.
