Carmelita is an interesting character because she’s the only child we see who chooses to join the fire-starting side of the schism. In most YA books children are always the heroes. Even the bullies usually end up joining the heroes when push comes to shove, because kids are supposed to unite together to fight monsters, cruelty, and grown-ups. It’s an unwritten rule of literature. But Mr. Snicket breaks that rule with Carmelita because that’s how the real world works. There are children like her who would rather start fires than put them out—there are a lot of them. She’s naturally inclined to destruction and cruelty, and takes pleasure in the pain of others. We don;t know Carmelita’s back story so we can’t speculate much on why she is the way she is, but we can tell that’s she the exact opposite of the Baudelaire orphans or the Quagmire triplets, who risk their lives several times for the chance to make the world a little quieter.
