Honest question because I’m actually really really curious. Do you not watch anything with a tie to crypto? Cause I also fucking hate crypto but I feel like dimension 20 is so important. Just because of the varying representation in all aspects. And I feel like in a smaller company like them deciding to make it a point of putting on actors of varying race and gender is so massive in the dnd community. (Not saying it’s a 100% shining example but comparatively to some other big shows) I understand you’re point about not being able to stomach watching and supporting a company who has someone on their payroll who’s into crypto but I’m just confused because anything on Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon Prime is already connected to crypto because of who owns them. How do you set up that harsh of a line? Is it just a personal vibes kinda thing? I’m sorry if I’m not wording any of this properly :( I respect your decision!
I don't think I explained it very clearly in my original post, so to be clear- its not just that Ally is doing crypto. carolyn page is also into crypto, she mentioned it in a breaking news skit, and im sure other members of the cast are as well. If the whole bit had just been a quick "i'll send you a referral link to ethereum", I might have been ok watching dimension 20. What Ally did- linking crypto to being on Testosterone- hurt me a lot. Ally is the biggest transmasc figure I know. I admired them and was happy to see them succeed. So when they joked that T makes you get into crypto, I felt betrayed.
So now, my options are do nothing, which in my head is basically agreeing haha yep, all transmasc people love polluting the environment, isnt that so quirky of us (to be clear I don't mind jokey generalizations. i think comments about transmascs getting into cars or having their favorite old man games are fun), or I could do.... something, anything, to say no, that generalization is wrong. I'm a small time blogger, nobody gives a shit what I say. The least I could do is, well, stop consuming their content.
What Ally said hurt me, which I acknowledge is a bit parasocial on my part. I intend to work on that, and my emotions rn in general, in my own time. It doesn't change the fact I don't want to consume anything they help produce, and since they're so tightly wound up with dropout in my head, I don't want to watch anything on dropout, at all. Which is why I'm not calling for people to stop watching dropout shows, I've just been explaining why I, personally, no longer feel comfortable watching dropout shows, and why I won't be active on this blog anymore. Keep watching if you like, I've got no skin in the game anymore.
(for the record, "Do you not watch anything with a tie to crypto?"- I do my best not to. I don't pay for any streaming services besides dropout (🏴‍☠) and I don't watch youtube channels or listen to musicians who I know are into crypto (I'm not on twitter so I'm not usually up to date). The fact that I kept using dropout after carolyn page mentioned being into crypto left me very conflicted, but I thought dimension 20 was worth it)

I've gotten a couple comments saying they thought Ally was joking, or owned crypto in the past and don't anymore. This surprised me, because I absolutely did not get that vibe at all, and wondered if I had missed something. I went back and rewatched the bit, and went over exactly what Ally said:
The bit starts with Lily offering Ally a referral link to some credit card, and Ally offers to send her a referral to Ethereum (in my opinion, if it isn't a joke, which I don't think it is, this removes the possibility that it was something they did in the past and don't do anymore at the time of filming).
Grant then asks them what crypto they own (present tense). Ally says, “I started testosterone, and when you do that, you have to buy crypto. And I didn’t want to, okay? All of a sudden now I’m, night and day, I’m on Reddit. I’m on websites. I’m buying crypto." (again, present tense).
Afterwards they joke about having immediately lost $800, but don't say it in a way that makes me, personally, think they've stopped.
I admit there's sort of a jokey tone through the whole thing, but I think that's because they're a comedian on a comedy show. It'd be weirder if they were fully serious.
They've also made a joke about crypto before, again tying it to starting T. I admit the tone I get from this, a sort of resigned oh haha this happened outside of my control, is the best argument I've seen so far for them being not entirely a crypto bro. But it's pretty flimsy at best. I'm not really convinced, not from one joke tweet that could be interpreted several ways, especially when they've straight up said they're buying crypto.
To conclude: I don't think they were joking. Unless they've stopped trading crypto since the episode was filmed, I have no reason to doubt they are still doing so. Unless they straight up say they aren't trading crypto, I'm going to assume they are. The evidence is on them at this point.
If you want to keep watching dimension 20/dropout tv content, thats fine. I'm not trying to convince anyone to drop it. I'm not trying to call out Ally or get them canceled. I'm just trying to explain why I'm not going to be in the fandom anymore.
If anyone has any more proof on the matter, or if Ally says something, please let me know. Otherwise I'm not interested in being told I'm misrepresenting what they said. I know they joke around a lot, but at this point I cannot interpret what they've said as anything other than them being a crypto user. For my own conscious, I'm done with the show. See y'all.
Dropout TV and Cryptocurrency
In tuesday's episode of Dirty Laundry, Ally Beardsley mentioned using cryptocurrency. Not only that, but they attributed their use of it to starting testosterone. As someone both aware of how cryptocurrency completely fucks over the environment and who will be (fingers crossed) starting testosterone soon, I'm feeling very split about consuming content they help create, including dimension 20. For the time being I'm going to stop watching dropout tv shows, and I don't intend to consume, produce, or spread any dimension 20/dropout tv content. I am also considering canceling my subscription to the service.
Part of my knows I'm overreacting, and my hurt is in no small part due to how much unearned trust I put into them. That's on me. The other part of me is disgusted with the normalization of crypto use, and I want to do at least the bare minimum of showing there are still folks out there who are against it.
Maybe in a day or two I'll realize I'm being silly and will take this down. Or maybe I won't be coming back. I don't know.

Hmm, thinking about Lucienne saying that for cerebro slugs, bodies are just bodies, and how throughout the season, most of the cerebro slugs we’ve come across have proven that true.  They don’t care about the bodies they take over, the people or the lives that once inhabited them.  And there’s nothing really more to it, they’re brain slugs!  It’s what they’re designed to do!  If they bother to look at their host’s memories, it’s just to blend in better, to make themselves less conspicuous.
And then there’s Skip.  Takes over Norman, and it’s your typical brain slug situation at first.  The obligatory shenanigans while figuring out bodily mechanics, the cases of mistaken identity.  Except at some point, there’s a shift.   Because Norman comes with so much baggage, Skip has to dive deep into his memories to understand why people are after this body.  And the more he searches, the more he understands about the person he’s taken over, the person whose body this was.  All of a sudden, the body is not “just” a body. It was someone else once, and it was their way of engaging with the galaxy, for better or for worse, just like Skip is using it now.
Cerebro slugs need host bodies in order to participate in the galaxy.  That’s what they’re designed for, it’s what their biology enables them to do.  But as Skip has come to realize, that’s not all they have to do and it’s certainly not all they can do.  They can choose to try and understand the person who was there before, to think about the legacy (good or bad) that the person leaves behind, to decide how they will move forwards in light of the past, even if their decision is to start anew.
And I think that’s a pretty cool exploration of the whole brain slug trope, to go “Yes, as a cerebro slug, I need a host body to live, but the body does not have to be just a body.   It’s not just about me, and it’s also not just about them.  Who they were mattered and who I am matters.  This body is now mine, but that doesn’t make it just a meat sack or a tool for my purposes.  I was born to do this, I have the power to do whatever I want, and yet.  I choose to recognize the person who had this body before.  I choose to acknowledge their memory, their existence.  I choose to allow myself to be changed by this, to create something new, an identity, a sense of self that isn’t about either of us, that’s more than either of us alone.  There doesn’t have to be any more to this than just me and a body, but I choose for there to be more.  I choose to care.”
