He's alive, gloriously and terribly alive. The last weeks have been a haze of pain, voices and light, his mind either a quiet void or too crowded. Even now he sometimes still struggles to hold on to a proper thought in the chaos.

"I'm surprised Terrion is letting anyone pass", he says just to end the silence following Floran's words. If anything all of this has made his friend even more protective and Ruven is grateful for it. The idea of facing anyone, answering questions and bearing the sympathy in their eyes for the poor, unhappy prince fills him with dread. But it seems the emperor is, of course, the exception from Terrion's strict rules. If Ruven can believe his own fragmented memory, it's not the first time his father has been sitting at his side in those past weeks either, though that could've also been the fever making him imagine things.

This conversation is certainly not what he expected, so much more honest than anything they've said in the last years. No accusation and no pity, instead an openness between them that's utterly new to Ruven. And so it only takes the touch of his father's hand, a simple gesture of comfort, and the tears start streaming down Ruven's face. He feels so raw and vulnerable, a throbbing wound, even if the one in his chest is starting to heal.

"I tried to make you listen for so long, Papa. And I'm so tired." Papa. A remnant from another time, before his father had fully become the emperor to him. But in the vulnerability of the moment the barries break down at last.

OFTEN , PEOPLE WOULD REMARK HOW MUCH RUVEN WAS LIKE HIS FATHER - but Floran thought differently. There were moments , vibrant and devastating moments where his son , reminded him of his wife. Of Ruven's mother. The two were of a similar mind , no matter how much they might deny it.

THEY ALL CARRY A SECRET - daunting , and something each of them had been taught to be ashamed of , but Elmyra had always been vocal in wanting to change things ; and so , it would appear , was Ruven. Even if he had made his thoughts and opinions known in a different way.

"It would seem i don't." EACH VISIT TO THE COUNTRY HAS BEEN DIFFICULT - the fear of what awaited him , looming like a sword over the emperor's head. To almost lose his only son ; his own mother had been beside herself , worried about the family line. Floran however , had been worried about his son. LEGACY / LINEAGE ; it means nothing to him if his own son cannot live to see it , to have a life of his own. It's as if the fog has been lifted & finally , the Kaiser see's Aztaria for what it is , or rather what it could become.

"I haven't been listening." He sinks beside his son's bedside , reaching for his hand. He cannot remember the last time he had comforted him , the last time he had been there. IT'S A THOUGHT , A TRUTH REALLY - that fills Floran with the utmost shame. How could he call himself a father when he had not seen what was happening beneath his own nose.

"I am listening now , Ruven , and i am hoping that it is not too late."

self-inflicted you were given the choice to live, a thousand times over, and yet you never choose it. not intentionally, oh no, you didn’t know it was a grave you were digging. but with every turn, you were twisting the knife deeper. every decision doomed you more. had it been anyone else, they would have made it. but you? you are so perfectly you, there was no escaping it. the true tragedy of it all, is how preventable it was.

He studies the scribbled notes infront of him, trying to make some sense of the chaos in his mind. But every attempt fails, ending with the same frantic thoughts over and over again: Siemon is dead. My spouse is dead and I couldn't save them. Even though the visions have ended ( as they ususally do when the dreaded event has come to pass ) the memory still haunt him without pause and reminds him of his shortcomings. Of the simple, painful truth that he'll never be able to tell Simeon how much it all truly meant to him, how much he loves them.

There's a whole drawer full of letters that their intended receiver will never get to see, a drawer filled with regrets. His gaze only lingers there for a moment though, before settling on the ink and quill instead. The eagle feather Ruven's now writing with had been Siemon's gift for his birthday. Even just sitting here and staring at the things on his desk makes him feel sick. A plate of food waits right next to him, but Ruven has barely been able to eat in days and continues to ignore it. He longs only for sleep and oblivion, though even that seems to elude him.

The prince is just thinking about getting back to the small comfort his bed offers, when he hears the door open and turns around to a rather unexpected sight. "Mama? What are you doing here?"

WITH EVERY STEP SHE TAKES WITHIN THE PALACE , WITH EACH TIME SHE RETURNS - she feels a part of herself close itself back up. The Empress has never found much joy in Aztaria , only in her children , and even they had been taken from her at a young age , by their grandmother who saw her as unfit to raise them. THEY ARE ALMOST ALL ADULTS NOW - her only son would one day take over the throne & yet , when she looked at him , she still saw the little boy who had looked at her in desperation , who even now , still wants to understand his mother.

It is Ruven that she comes to see , after receiving a troubling letter from her husband. She sweeps along the hallways - her hair loose for once , tumbling down her back like a waterfall. It is in a sense , it's own form of rebellion , to be dressed so simply within these walls of finery and expectation.

Reaching his rooms - the empress hesitates before simply walking in. Her hand touches the handle and for a moment , she almost knocks. YET , SHE IS NO STRANGER - this was her home as much as her husbands and so , finally , she enters.

His head is still spinning, as Ruven carefully squints against the sun. Perhaps he's overdone it a bit last night, judging by how shattered he feels. But sometimes those nights are the only ones when he truly comes alive, when he can be just Ruven, a young man among others, and not the crown prince, bound by duty and protocol. Admittedly there's also the thrill of having only Terrion at his side, the opportunity for them to move freely without the prying eyes at court on them.

Ruven groans, and for a long moment that remains the only indication that he is indeed awake. Regrettably. "You could've just slept here on the bed too, you know? It's certainly big enough." Is it the wine still in his veins, that makes him this bold? If so, Ruven doesn't care.

THE SUN HITS HIS FACE , STARTLING THE KNIGHT AND CAUSING HIM TO STRETCH OUT UPON THE WOODEN FLOOR OF THE TAVERN ROOM THE PRINCE HAD INSISTED ON RENTING THE NIGHT BEFORE - the smell of stale wine fills his nostrils and he finds himself groaning as every bone in his body seems to creak. This was not the first time he had slept on the floor of a room above a tavern , nor , he doubts - would it be the last. THE CROWN PRINCE ENJOYED HIS JAUNTS OUTSIDE OF THE PALACE - and often attempted them without armed guard. This made Terrion's life particularly difficult but he'd learned there was no point in complaining.

"Please tell me that you're awake."

NO ONE ELSE WOULD DARE TO SPEAK TO RUVEN IN SUCH A MANNER ; but they were far past formalities at this point , given how much trouble they'd gotten into over the years.

Ruven looks up from the textbook, unsure of what's unfolding infront of him. It's rare that the emperor visits during his lessons and even more unusual to interrupt them altogether.

When his father kneels down, Ruven allows himself to look at him, curiously studying the face that is both distant and familiar to him, looking for an explanation.

"A trip?" The excitement is hard to contain and he doesn't even try to. Yes, a prince should be dignified and composed, his grandmother said so many times, but he forgets about all that now, beaming at his father. "Where are we going?"

THERE ARE MOMENTS - HOWEVER BRIEF , WHERE FLORAN SEE'S A GENUINE CHILDLIKE GLEE ON HIS YOUNG SONS FACE - one that is quickly wiped off by the harshness of the dowager empresses tone. Yet it is there , nonetheless & these were often the moments that Floran wishes he could stop in time. ALLOW HIS SON TO BE NOT AN HEIR , BUT A CHILD. To play like his siblings , to enjoy the world , rather than hide away from it.

HE WAS ONLY SEVEN ; but already possessed too much of the seriousness that had been installed within Floran from an early age. Today , he should be sitting in his studies , but the Emperor chooses this brief reprieve from his mother ( who was currently visiting her sister in a neighboring city ) to spend some time with his only son.

DISMISSING THE BOYS TUTOR , he approaches the table , kneeling down in front of him. "Your mother has taken one of her trips, perhaps we could take a trip of our own, yes? just us."

His brothers would mind the other children - the guards too , of course - but it had become apparent to him just how distant Ruven was becoming , and he wished to change that for the better.

📿 : so tbh we need to come up with the religious part of aztaria, BUT what I can say is that ruven is just not a fan of religion in general. like to him it feels limiting & indoctrinating & he despises pretty much everything that‘s supposed to limit free thinking (in his opinion). personally ruven does still believe in a higher power, but not a fixed one.

🗡️ : as part of his military education, ruven has been trained with both sword & pistol. he hates using weapons though, as it brings back the trauma of his childhood, of being forced to exercise in the rain & being woken by loud bangs in the middle of the night for lessons. if necessary, he would choose a pistol over the sword for the sake of practicality.

✂️: so in my mind his hair really reflects his inner life. for the most part it’s kept pretty short and neat, both practical and elegant, as expected of him as a prince. if it’s less well kept & tousled that‘s a good indicator for a depressive episode & him just not caring about the appearance. post fae-realm & with living mostly in the countyside, his hair too becomes more wild and untamed. ruven lets it grow out considerably & he actually has the curly hair of his mother, but you hardly saw that before.
