Association between Income and Life Expectancy.
Topic Scope
After looking through the codebooks provided in the course, I have decided to choose the Gapminder codebook. After reviewing the codebook I am particularly interested to see if there is any relation between the income of a person and life expectancy. Further I would like to explore if there is any relationship between the life expectancy rate to the CO2 emission and urban rate.
I have decided to include the following variables from the list of the variables given in Gapminder codebook for my personal codebook for this study i.e:
incomeperperson : 2010 Gross Domestic Product per capita in constant 2000 US$. The inflation but not the differences in the cost of living between countries has been taken into account.
lifeexpectancy : 2011 life expectancy at birth (years) The average number of years a newborn child would live if current mortality patterns were to stay the same.
co2emissions : 2006 cumulative CO2 emission (metric tons), Total amount of CO2 emission in metric tons since 175.
urbanrate : 2008 urban population (% of total) Urban population refers to people living in urban areas as defined bynational statistical offices (calculated using World Bank population estimates and urban ratios from the United Nations World Urbanization Prospects)
Existing Topic Research and Hypothesis
A search in Google Scholar yielded some earlier research on the association between income and life expectancy in United States based on data obtained in 2001 - 2004. The study is listed below in the References section.
Additionally, there are earlier studies dating to the 1990s. The data sets for the above and earlier studies are not readily available for comparison. However, the R Chetty study does indicate that certain income and life expectancy have a correlation and Reza Nadimi study indicates impact of CO2 emission on quality of life. The degree to which they are related remains unknown at this point until I begin analysis.
Summary
We have covered the purpose for this initial post, including the selection of a data set, and determination of a research topic based on the data set. Additionally, we have determined the content of a personal codebook for the data set based on the topic scope, and formulation of a hypothesis for our research topic.
