E X P O S U R E
It’s often said that ‘you can’t be what you cannot see’ so I understand just how important it is to get up, dress up, show up and truly engage.
We accomplished yet another goal this past weekend. My daughter/COO Jade and I found more courage and accepted the challenge to operate a concession @javitscenter in the #nrf2023 Expo Hall for 3 full days.
Yup, I know it’s not like we haven’t had the opportunity to serve on a global stage but it was a new venue, with new folks, new rules and new challenges for Jade, our young staff and me as well.
Serving up our #smoothies, #fruit cups and #açaí bowls to individuals invested in all things #retailtech from all over the world was extraordinary.
And I know our staff, made up of young adults, some high school and collegiate scholars, were excited to be in the venue too because they got to interact, ask questions, learn more, pick up swag and enjoy the convention. I know being on-site broadened their horizons and opened their minds to possibilities.
So on this #thankfulthursday , I am overwhelmed with pride and gratitude to each and everyone that supported @thenourishspot between Jan 15-17.
I thank my friend @claudiasanchezmahedy for seeing me. i thank @foodfleet and the @nrf for choosing me & @thenourishspot .
Now even I am #furtherinspired about the future because the more I am exposed, the more we grow and expand our territory!

One day in 2021, I followed up on HARO request and it’s a gift that keeps on giving.
You see, responding to that request put me in contact with a NYU student scholar & journalist named Lisa Elena Rennau.
As a result of our invaluable connection, me and my small business, The Nourish Spot, has been featured in her class work.
Most recently, Lisa and her classmate shot a video, featuring me discussing mentorship and more, to fulfill an assignment for their multimedia storytelling class.
I am thankful, grateful and blessed. And now if you reside in Jamaica, Queens drop by and dine in at The Nourish Spot or contact one of our food delivery app partners — Grubhub, Ubereats or Doordash — if you live, work or play within a 20 mile radius of our 107-05 Guy R Brewer Blvd brick and mortar location in Jamaica, Queens!

Dreams do come true especially here in the Empire State!!
Thank you NYC Department of Small Business Services for hosting us Nasdaq to ring the opening 🔔 on Friday to kick off the national observance of #smallbusinesssaturday !!
As a native born New Yorker, I’ve secretly yearned to see my likeness, for a great reason, up in lights in Times Square, often called the crossroads of the world.
And to be perfectly honest, I remember working on a project for my former employer that called for me to promote some new advertising campaign they had placed on a new spectacular. They already hold iconic jumbotron real estate.
And now here was I, many years later, seeing myself as a member of the NYC Mayor’s Small Business Advisory Commisson, and my daughter Jade E. Duncan ‘s likeness and the brand image of The Nourish Spot , our #blackfamilyownedmicrobusinessoftheyear on the jumbotron outside 4 Times Square.
To add icing to the cake, my son & photographer Owen Duncan was on hand to document the momentous, priceless moment.
GOD, thank you 🙏🏾

During my 1999 - 2015 tenure with Prudential Financial, I held 5 different roles beginning as a Manager and leaving as Department Vice President, Global Communications. The team I led promoted the ideals of the company’s Corporate Character.
I ascended the corporate ladder through cultivating relationships across the company, dependably contributing successful hard work, hiring, coaching and mentoring others as well sheer determination.
Part of my role was media relations. Pitching stories and story angles to journalists like rappers spit lyrics and bars. Earning a story in The Financial Times is considered legendary work. So imagine my delight when I found myself IN The Financial Times, on the pages on the day we observe #internationalwomensday. 💫💫💫💫💫💫 GOD is AH-MAZING🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

Waking up grateful, how about you? 😘 🌞
Hot off the presses!! Extra, extra read all about it. 🗞 🗞
DYK that yesterday, Friday, November 20 was AKA Caregivers' Community Impact Day ?
I was unaware of the observance until my friends alerted me to this awesome Summer 2020 article published in the august 𝓘𝓿𝔂 𝓛𝓮𝓪𝓯 magazine.
From my intel, the quarterly publication is distributed to more than 250K active sorority sisters who live and work in the US and around the world! 🙌🏾
I have to thank my friend and former colleague @york_college_cuny Stephanie Cooper Smiley, president of @epsilonpiomega Chapter, Program Chair Kim Adams, Adrienne Boyd and Michele Hart, co-chairs of the Community Activities Committee for this awesome recognition.
Thank you too @blayne_j and Miss Joan for alerting me and putting a big old “kool-aid smile” on my face.
I wholeheartedly thank the chapter and its individual members, that live near and far, for embracing me & choosing @thenourishspot this year, beginning in Feb, 2020 and through the pandemic.
I am so GRATEFUL, words can’t really describe the JOY I feel this morning !! 💕
Thank you for allowing my #blackfamilyownedmicrobusinessoftheyear to #nourishu , your families as well as essential workers and veterans.
It takes a village to sustain a local small business!! Oh yes, it does 💯

Thank you Lloyd Cambridge Tracy Lewis and Brendez Wineglass for believing I had experience worth sharing !!
I am delighted to be a member of the NYC Small Business Ecosystem Advisory Council. I am honored to know my voice & experience with The Nourish Spot is positively impacting the landscape & marketplace for Black and Latinx entrepreneurs across NYC!!
I applaud Next Street and Common Future
who partnered with Progress Playbook, CGR Consulting and a collection of other local stakeholders, like me, in New York City to examine the current state of play of the city’s small business communities and supporting ecosystem, with a specific lens on local businesses owned by people of color and the COVID-19 response and recovery.
Thanks to JPMorgan Chase & Co. too!

When a story you are in is front page news for all the right reasons. First we went digital on Tuesday & then traditional print Wednesday. As a PR person, ya’ll know I love a story that continues especially when it’s exposing the BS Black executives navigate everyday.
Let me make this clear, I LOVED what I did at PRU. I was robbed of my role & my livelihood! Here’s how I see it, I had complained numerous times about racist behaviors of mostly white men to no avail. The last racist straw was the job elimination. My new white male boss (who has since left the company too ) aided by a Black woman in HR eliminated my role so he could bring back a white woman to the company.
This white woman that they brought back into the department to be the CCO was my former colleague. This woman had cursed me publicly in a meeting in front of all of our team members before she left the company. And at my expense, this dude removed me so she could return & be comfortable.
Restructuring my a$$!
Wait, my agreement also stated that I could NEVER apply for a role at the company again.
If that isn’t racism, I don’t know what the hell racism is. Thanks again WSJ & Khadeeja Safdar for exposing such an awful corporate business practice. #myperceptionismyreality #blacklivesmatter #imspeaking

LONG POST —- Let me tell you a powerful story about prayer and a lovely lady, First Lady Simone Meeks otherwise known as @eyesimone2 ! 🌱You see I am blessed that this light is part of #mytribemyvibe too 🙌🏾
🌱 Yesterday morning about 9 am, while I was standing on a long line, in the driving cold rain, @restaurant_depot (Maspeth — there are lines everywhere & its for our safety. I understand & appreciate it) my phone rang. 🌱 The call, no joke, from Simone triggered tears of joy! My glasses even fogged up 🤣😂 (y’all that wear glasses know what I mean) .
🌱
Simone called to place a large order so she and her awesome family could donate food & feed #firstresponders — FDNY Battalion & EMT Station 47 & others. 🌱
And you know what, I had been consistently praying for a credible link to help me fulfill the wishes of some of the other wonderful folks (you know who you are) that had already purchased digital gift cards from @thenourishspot , my #blackfamilyownedmicrobusinessoftheyear . 🌱 And you know what, prayer workssssss. 🙏🏾💯 Not only did GOD dispatch my daughter Jade home the immediate night before, GOD also sent Simone & had me on line “ABOUT 2 SHOP” so I was able to just increase my inventory list 🙌🏾 🌱While I didn’t get to take a photo of allllllll the sandwich wraps Jade made to fulfill the order while @miaaa.lin @den.doitt & I still fulfilled #fooddeliveryapp & #curbsidepickup orders (THANK YOU #Nourishers ) I did get a photo of the gigantic smoothies we sent to quench their thirst as they ate both veggie & protein packed sandwiches! 🌱 We worked so hard I had to call second shift @bbanksy__ & @amibalde758 in a 1/2 hour early so the early crew could rest their legs, eat a lil bit & then go immediately home.
I wake up extra grateful this morning, appreciative for @eyesimone2 , all the other donors, my co-owner daughter & our Saturday staff team of 1 college freshman and 3 high school seniors, who continue to isolate, mask and glove up to walk to work & give their all, despite their heartbreak of being robbed of all the “pomp & circumstance” that is supposed to envelop them & their lives this year 💪🏾#thankfulgratefulblessed #onenewyork #covid19diary
