Digitigrade Troubles

in my previous post I showed a few examples of common ways digitigrade legs get done wrong. So now I’m going to explain the problems they each have, comparing them to a real goat leg structure because the request did specifically mention satyrs. 

First and most common: The Z leg.

The Z leg doesn’t work because it keeps very human like leg proportions and musculature while also trying to follow the common and mistaken assumption that digitigrade legs are more angled. The femur is too long and the joints are too bent and the muscles follow the skeletal form too closely.

Aside from cats, most digitigrade legs have much shorter femurs, and the angles are way straighter than you might assume (especially on horses). As well as that, the musculature is fairly smooth as it tapers from the hip to the foot. So the Z leg can be fixed by shortening and straightening the upper leg, and smoothing it all out.

Problem 2, also pretty common: The Drumstick

The Z leg is common because of a mistaken assumption about digitigrade leg bones. The drumstick is common because of observation without research. Most people have a pretty good idea what dog and cat and horse legs look like on the outside, and simply over-compensate for the bipedal form. It’s easy to look at your pet dog and simplify the leg to “big round muscles at the top, skinny leg below”, especially since much of the leg overlaps the body and is covered in fur. The upper leg looks extra round when a cat or dog sits down. 

But it doesn’t work because the leg ends up being really front heavy and unbalanced, with nearly a 90 degree angle at the knee. It can be corrected by slimming it down and making it more triangular than rounded. Bring the foot more in line with the center of the body.

And problem 3, more common with paws but I have seen people besides my younger self do it with hooves: Human Leg, Animal Foot

This is what happens when a new artist just hasn’t figured out how non-human legs work yet but they want to draw a satyr or their first fursona or whatever. Baby’s first attempt at non human feet on a bipedal figure. In my case I also eventually changed how I drew it slightly by exaggerating the funny little notch behind the hoof (the fetlock i think) after I made cosplay hooves that required me to walk on my toes with blocks of wood attached to knee socks. It was painful, but I could take my own reference pictures that way.

But all that aside, this doesn’t work because it really misunderstands how a digitigrade foot works. The bit that looks like a backwards knee on a digitigrade leg is in fact the heel of the foot. Digitigrade means walking on the toes. So this problem can be fixed by lengthening the foot and shortening the rest of the leg.
