‘Stranger in Communication’
Both modules Process and Enquiry and Visual language have clearly developed my skillset and understanding of the conceptual process of my making. I chose to follow the stranger brief given to me through the Visual Language module and I took this theme forward and developed it into my process and enquiry module. Using various workshops such as: Printing, woodcut, cyanotype, projection, sound and performance I was able to create a full body of work for both modules.
Firstly, I focused on the chaos and order of line in patterns when creating my folded forms. I experimented with several folding techniques then became focused on one named the ‘Mountain and Valley’ fold. I was intrigued by the process and interaction I had with the paper when creating the fold, I sot fit for what I was subconsciously trying to conceptually create – Stranger in Communication.
Secondly, I took photographs and created collages to develop the shapes I had created from paper folding. From this I was able to develop these patterns into the workshops I had later taken part in. Focusing on my relationship with different materials and how I communicate with them. It became evident that every material has its own ‘Stranger in Communication’, its own identity. Although I was using the same pattern in each workshop the outcome was different due to the use of unique material.
Thirdly, looking further into my theme, ‘Stranger in Communication’ I became confronted with certain objects that have became a literal stranger in communication: letters, postcards and photographs. I explored the format, text and material of these objects. The nostalgic notion behind each object creates an instant bond between the viewer and the object, being the reason, I decided to focus on these three soul objects for the Process and Enquiry module.
Also, I focused on the format of the letters, the text on the photographs and the shapes on the photographs. I created print and cyanotypes that highlight the importance of the layout shown in letters, postcards and photographs. An outdated way of communication that very few use in our modern day. Therefore, showing their simplest form best describes my concept of a ‘Stranger in Communication’.
Moreover, the postcards are written in a language unknown to me, this was where my curiosity spurred. I didn’t read the text like letters I read them like a drawing. I took the text and developed it into drawings, impressions and sculptures. Using materials like wire, string and thread I was able to bring the text to life and turn it into something other than letters. Focusing the viewer on my idea of the text and not its literal meaning.
Furthermore, I further develop my concept through my making by take a casting of the postcard. I several processes to achieve this that failed. Therefor I decided to laser cut my postcard into plastic so that I could then use that as a mould. I used plaster to take an impression which was then used for another mould in which I could pour slip into. Both moulds were successful and achieved the outcome I had hoped for.
Overall, it can be concluded that both modules Process and Enquiry and Visual Language have clearly developed my skillset and understanding of the conceptual process of my making. Through the use of several workshops: Printing, woodcut, cyanotype, projection, sound and performance I was able to create a full body of work that contributed to my theme of ‘Stranger in Communication.’ I was able to investigate my relationship through different processes and materials. This helped develop my understanding of my concept behind my work in both modules.
I feel that I have successfully shown a broad range of skills throughout my use of material and processes. Also, portraying a strong sense of development through one workshop leading onto the next has highlighted a reoccurrence that happens during my creative process. I can adapt any material into a further development in relation to the theme I am exploring.
Lastly, if I were to explore this topic again and take it further I would explore different emotive objects that contribute to the concept of a ‘Stranger in Communication.’ Research into modern forms of communication and depict how we have estranged ourselves from human interaction due to the use of modern technology.

Created my own carbon paper so I can transfer the text from the postcard over to thicker paper. I then used a pen to go over the faint writing and to create an indent on the paper that should create an embossed texture of the lettering on the paper! I then casted it with porcelain slip. Waiting for it to dry out and to be bisque fired.
If this process doesn’t work I will keep trying different methods that will show the text on the clay!
