3D development - deconstructing then reconstructing
I wasn’t happy with the structure and instead of abandoning/starting afresh, i decided to embrace the unpredictability and deconstruct with a hammer. As the initial structure is made up of small human figures, the forms left behind are reminiscent of this. I am interested in biomorphic type shapes and wanted my outcome and developments to reflect this. This is also following the ongoing theme of connections with people and crossed paths in life.

Sam Ainsley Talk + Exhibition
As part of the module, I decided to visit an event at GOMA via Eventbrite of Sam Ainsley's exhibition opening. The exhibition, "" included Ainsley giving us a tour of her work; describing her working practice, inspirations, subject matter and wider influence. After the walk-around, we were invited to "The Studio" to participate in a Q+A, further discussing her work and background in teaching at GSA, how times have throughout her 50 years of being active.
My biggest take away from this experience was how Ainsley's social and political awareness could be found in her work and subject matter. Hearing her speak about gender issues, government, global events etc solidified the importance of staying alert to what is going on (as an artist) to remain grounded. I hadn't experienced the artist themself, in the flesh, describing their work and influences before so this was very insightful and eye-opening for me.

Feeling into Form on JSTOR
I wanted to look further into Antony Gormley's working methods and his reasoning/inspiration behind his work, and so I had a look at a few articles via JSTOR. This one in particular was of interest to me, "Feeling into Form" from Philosophical Transactions: Biological Sciences.
"I think that all art is an expression of and an instrument for the evolution of feeling..."
Gormley describes how the self consciousness is linked heavily to his own practice, looking at the space his own body and self takes up. When creating his human-based sculptures, he uses himself as a springboard or prop to go off. I think this is what attracts me to his work as it comes across very human and tentative. Overall, the extract raised some interesting questions about sculpture and how we perceive it in varying context. I like reading about psychologically inclined/evaluative text involving art.

ARTIST STATEMENT + 10 FINAL
Considering the brief, I knew I wanted to evolve my working practice whilst exploring a theme relating to human condition. I settled on the unpredictability of human behaviour and our nature, using the word "sonder" as a springboard.
My work transpired and evolved through a multitude of visual outcomes including: photography, sculpture, assemblage, projection, digital manipulation and print. I made a conscious effort to adapt to 'mistakes', embracing the process and working intuitively. The brief relates with both my practice, and theme which I felt was an important crossover, as I explore our unknown connections and overlap with one another.

Video Projection + Playing with light
The visual outputs gained from the use of the projector cast onto the sculpture really fascinated me. I love the idea of using light and shadow as a medium to further develop 2D work, a lot of my 2D forms were traced from these shadows.
The reason for blending the 3D outcome with the time-based outcome came quite naturally, wanting to blend and intersect the two. This works parallel with my theme of interconnection and the invisible links between us as people. The way we intersect and overlap, this is portrayed physically in the 3D form as the shapes weave in and out of each other.

Screen-printing
This was my first experience with this type of printmaking, Oliwia very kindly spent time showing me the whole process and how to develop the screens.
The process itself was very unpredictable given the nature and my inexperience. However, this ties in well with the brief as I evolved my own working practice through doing so. As you can see, one screen didn't develop as well as the other but the abstraction of the initial photograph shared similarities with my ongoing body of work. This 2D development will be used in the outcome in some way e.g collage or assemblage.

Developing Risograph Prints + Collage
Using the light and shadow forms that were cast onto the wall while projecting onto my sculptural based work, I decided to elevate some previous risograph prints. These helped me solidify the type of mixed media elements I wanted to use in my 2D outcome- assemblage, collage and use of line. I wanted my developments to all fuse together and overlap (as this also links well with my theme) and so there are digital, sculptural, light and printmaking within these.

Sculpting using human form
3D development- taking inspiration from Antony Gormley and Alberto Giacomett's studies and sculptures evaluating the human figure. Same working process as previous, use of tinfoil, masking tape + air dry clay.
Using video projection of photography work within this module, shadows are cast behind the sculpture which I love as they create a strong visual. I will make use of these, tracing the outline to further 2D developments.

Looking at concepts for final development incorporating 3D with time-based.
Using video projection of photography work to cast onto and behind structure. Really happy with the outcome of this so far, next steps include creating moving image and additional sound so the work becomes interactive/installation-like.

Experimentation with moving image, creating GIFs from photography developments. Inverting colours to determine whether dark or light works better when projected onto sculpture. Next steps: adding text potentially + sound.

Time-Based/Sound Art Lecture (delivered by ruth)
This workshop + lecture covered the history of sound art and some of the first time-based type artworks to be recorded. Taking inspiration from this and using it in a modern context, i took audio recordings on my voice notes app relating to my theme of human condition/evolution. The audios consisted of: daily conversations, keys jangling as I locked my door to leave the house, the lifts in college announcing floor numbers, a hand dryer etc. These audios were then edited and overlapped using a website, Audio Mass. I was able to alter the sounds and manipulate the frequencies and depth. In order to develop this further and possibly use it within my time-based final work, i could imitate this process and record new audios of conversation and other noises of interest. My plan is to overlay this with a moving image/animation so it is a sound and video projection.

Looking at contemporary influences that explore similar themes of human condition, behaviours, connection, space around us.
Antony Gormley’s work is mostly sculpture based, exploring the space we occupy. His human figures are often visually abstracted and made up of unconventional materials. His artist statement highlights his interest in the the relationship between the human body and space. Gormley says that “sculpture can provide a point of silence and stillness that can return us to ourselves as physical beings” and takes inspiration from Buddhist meditation as the practice is based around bodily experience. I take inspiration from Gormley’s use of the human form and hope to highlight this through 3D sculptural developments. The themes found throughout his body of works relates to my own, finding interest in being aware of ourselves and the people around us.

Arturo Herrera | Artnet

Arturo Herrera's work explores abstraction, memory, connection and reinterpreting popular imagery. He makes use of assemblage techniques and collage, gestural marks and visual layering.
To me, Herrera's pieces are very whimsical and give a sense of nostalgia. His working method of abstracting images with photo layering and print is something I will experiment with myself. I love the prints on fabric, i think he has repurposed a tote bag on the right. I see a lot of interlacing lines, overlapping shapes which, to me, shows hints of human connection to the world around us.

Jennifer Steinkamp Artist Talk 2019 - YouTube

Jennifer Steinkamp's video projection/interactive work explores the intersection of the physical and the virtual, perception and space. I like the abstract and sensitive nature of her work, also the interactive element allows the human form to change/move the animations.

Looking for historical artists/context of interest.
Alberto Giacometti’s figure sculptures exploring the human form in an abstracted, elongated sense. Can be said he explores the alienation of modern urban life and the disconnection humans feel from each other. These sculptures are from mid 20th century but the themes present within the work are more relevant than ever, i would say. Giacometti abstracts all of his figure work to challenge the idea of how much u can alter something before it becomes unrecognisable. This approach interests me and I would like to implement this within my own working method, particularly as i navigate a 3D outcome.
Henry Moore's art | Henry Moore Foundation (henry-moore.org)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Henry Moore's abstract and figurative sculptures often explore the human form, with a focus on universal themes such as: motherhood, vulnerability, and humanity. His work shows the expressive potential of form, I like the large scale he works in as it explores space and voids- the space we take up and the negative space we fill. To me, biomorphic visuals connect the sculptures back into nature, evolution and humanity.

Projection development
Using the overhead projector to engage 3D work with 2D. I used sugar to carve shapes into as I imagined each tiny grain to be a person, seemingly insignificant from an outward, birds eye view. The main goal I had in mind when working on this was to convey perspective, the importance of taking a step back and grounding yourself. This again links back to sonder and its definition.

Structural base for clay sculpture.
Creating base with tinfoil + masking tape. Forming organic shapes sourced from previous 2D developments. Using form to cast shadow. Structure will be strengthened through use of air-dry clay. Plans to project 2D and video art onto the sculptures.
This sculpture is a sort of trial and next step towards the final 3D outcome. Working out how the clay sets on this type of base, if it’s robust enough.. if it cracks and doesn’t hold its shape etc.
The concept/reason in terms of human condition/evolution :
The shape is made up of weaved paths which forms the overall structure, i envision this to be the crossed paths of each other that we encounter every single day without even realising. Looking back at the idea of sonder again, this evokes ideas of realisation and recognising our vast existence as humankind. We weave in and out of countless lives and people, interlocking, leaving imprints and unknowingly connecting. I have portrayed a physical representation of this through sculpture.

Shoot no.3
Introducing people/figures into the concept, the curtains are now open -portraying more of a vulnerability through the ability to see into the room through the window. Capturing a domestic, natural scene as though the subject matter is unsuspecting and unaware of onlookers. I have continued to make use of the projector/star light as the previous uses were successful.
Using my family members as the subject matter gives me a different perspective, as though I'm a stranger looking into my own daily life through a window. I would like to develop the photography and digital based element of this into a time-based media practice. Perhaps through moving image or experimenting with animation/stop motion and adding sound. (source sound art lecture + audios made)
