Project statement
Whether it be dance halls in the 1950s, Jazz clubs in the 1920s or even the nightclubs we have today, club culture has been growing and changing for around 100 years. Some say that club culture in today’s society is dying others say it is evolving. This project is inspired by the evolution of club culture and the unpredictability of dance as clubbing and dancing come hand in hand. I wanted to explore why club culture is the way it is today and what inspired it. Was it a clear linear evolution or was it as unpredictable and sporadic as dance can be.

Disco Ball Sculpture process
Inspired by club culture and reflections of the materiality workshop I decided to make a sculpture of a disco ball as it is a true symbol of nightlife. I paper mache'd the base then I gathered cd's from different eras and cut them up and glued them onto the base. I found the cd's very hard to work with as they wouldnt break off into even pieces but I think this unevenness adds to the effect of the sculpture.

Artist Research - Club Culture
I wanted to research some artists that explore the theme of club culture throughout their work. Two artists that I found most interesting were Denzel Forrester and Dave Swindells.
Denzel Forrester lived in New York and London which are both very famous for their clubbing scenes. He creates these beautiful pieces that exude movement through the use of vibrant colours. In his work he depicts dance hall and club crowds a lot of which are inspired by reggae and disco. Through his bright colours and rough brushstrokes he manages to capture the essence of dance.
Dave Swindells is a photographer who has been documenting nightlife since 1983 specifically in London. His photographs highlight dance, joy and even scandalousness of london club culture in the 80's. He uses film photography which highlights the vivid colours and blurry movements of the dance floor.

Dance Imprints - Process
This post shows the process i used in order to make my prints of shoes and feet to the sound of dance. i used a shower curtain in order to not make my flat messy but actually really enjoyed the shapes and colours made onto this as well and plan to use this further on in my project.
