Evaluation
For my Process and Production project, I initially focused on the theme of exclusion among women through the lens of feminist theory. However, as I began to delve into this topic, I found myself uninspired and uncertain about how to proceed. It quickly became apparent that I needed a new direction. This led me to explore the emotional spectrum associated with colour and its relationship with postmodernism. The moment I changed themes, a flood of ideas and concepts emerged, confirming that I had made the right choice. In this project, I aimed to utilise balloons in innovative ways. Having worked with them in the past, I felt there was potential to explore different avenues. I wanted this project to visually contrast with my Creative Project, which had a dark and moody aesthetic; instead, I envisioned something bright and colourful, characterised by chaotic brush marks. I made a conscious decision not to engage in workshops, as I wanted the focus to remain on mark-making throughout the process. Reflecting on future possibilities, I would consider experimenting with paper vessels and gold foil. I believe these materials could effectively symbolise various concepts I wish to convey. Portraiture was never an option for this project; I intended to draw attention to markmaking and texture instead. During my development phase, I experimented with Styrofoam balls alongside Modroc, spray paint, and my airbrush. Although I appreciated these pieces individually, they did not resonate with me as a cohesive outcome. Ultimately, I am thrilled with how my final project turned out, even though it diverged from my original composition. The initial concept I had in mind did not translate as I had envisioned. However, I quickly adapted and created a new final piece that I believe successfully captures my intentions. The use of a plinth in my presentation enhanced the paintings, allowing them to take on the shape of the plinth itself. This transformation was vital, as it helped shift the works from a two-dimensional representation to a more three-dimensional experience. Overall, I am very satisfied with this project. It allowed me to explore all the ideas and concepts I had throughout the process, providing clarity on what worked and what didn’t. The vibrant colours, varied textures, and innovative use of materials came together to create a visually striking and meaningful body of work. This project not only reflects my artistic evolution but also highlights the importance of flexibility and adaptability in the creative process. I learned to embrace unexpected changes and find inspiration in new directions, which ultimately led to a more fulfilling and engaging final result. As I move forward, I am excited to apply these insights and continue exploring the rich interplay between colour, emotion, and form in my future projects

Final outcome: ‘Hues of Humanity’
In my final artwork, I drew inspiration from my previous project, incorporating elements from it in a transformative way. As I draped my canvases over the plinth, which I was using as a table, I discovered a new composition I wanted to explore. The sharp edges of the plinth contrasted perfectly with the soft curves of the balloons and the fluid lines of my paintings. This juxtaposition sparked the idea to cover the plinth entirely with my two canvases, creating an intriguing contrast between the squared edges and the round/ organic shapes.
Reflecting on my process, I’m pleased I chose to leave out the colored light bar. Adding it might have took away from the vibrant hues of the paint I used. By limiting myself to one shade/ tone of each color, I ensured that all elements felt cohesive, as if they were meant to be paired together. This consistency in color palette prevents the composition from becoming too chaotic or overwhelming, allowing the significance and emotional related to each color to shine through.

I wanted to see how coloured lights looked coming from the top of the balloon however I feel like this as a final looked better without coloured light and instead well lit with the normal studio lights.

For my final I wanted to combine my 2 different canvases that somewhat relate to each other and combine them with a chain of silver foil balloons in which has some painted on. I found a peice of development work I forgot about as I never photographed at the time of a modroc casting on a large silver balloon. I wanted to include this incorporate texture along with mimicking a bowl in which the balloons were coming down from. Symbolising how our emotions sometimes pour out of us. By combining these in a way with my canvas painting I hope to create an eye catching final piece.

For canvas 2 I wanted to keep the same colour pallet however I wanted to create texture with brush strokes and with an ink roller. I used a range of different brushes as I wanted there to be some thicker and some thinner marks. I then mixed white acrylic with water in a spray bottle and sprayed the canvas with the mixture. This left behind splatters of paint which help to bring back my element of round within this project but within an organic way. As each round splatter of paint is different and I had not a lot of controls on where and how these came out. I am really happy with this canvas as it expresses movement and mark making which also translates the chaos of our human emotions.

I used the light bar again on this painting to see how it would turn out and again I liked the results it gave as the light flicked through all the colours.

For my first canvas I went into this with no plan on where each line and dot was going. I started off by painting and stippling white paint onto the canvas where ever I felt like it should go. I created random times and circles to keep with the previous development. I built this up in layers combing it with bright colourful lines and dots. Done I blended the white into the colours some I left as harsh edges. I and very happy with how this came out as I never had a set idea on how this would look. I feel like it’s the perfect balance between black and colour. Along with telling the viewer about how unpredictable our emotions can be.
Tumblr media
By using a light bar I wanted to see how different coloured light affected this painting. This was pretty cool and opened me up to the idea of potential using coloured lights within my final as it distorts each colour in a different way depending on what coloured light is on.

I experimented with blowing up a foil balloon and painting on it which allowed me to keep the textures created with the brush but also allowed me to have the round elements being the balloon its self. I thought of using a round balloon as I wanted to mimic our emotions on it to symbolise how sometimes we compress our emotions into a ball which can result in overwhelming ourselves and potentially causing a meltdown of emotions.

These are a collection of developed drawing I created using posca pens and paint sticks on both black and holographic card. I really liked how the posca pends came out especially on the holographic ones as the matt finish of the posca contrasted nicely with the shiny reflective surface of the holographic card. I also l really like the drastic contrast between the bright bold coloured posca on top of black card. However not a fan of the sheerness or the paint sticks on top of both as as you almost lose the contrast. I want to develop using black alongside bright colours into a painting along with keeping these abstract yet free flowing lines as I feel like these help symbolise our emotions as our days go on. Some are bigger and end in a ball and some tapper off into a point coming to an end. Similar to our emotions getting bottled up ready to burst at the end of the day or fading away into nothing.

I continued on to exploring squeegee art again. I just wanted to explore this with plain black plaint instead of colours for now as I was looking at possibly painting on a larger scale of canvas.
I do like how these turned out so wanted draw on top of some extra ones with paint sticks to see if the colours would show up on top of the black. However they are very subtle and not as noticeable as I would like. I did end up drawing around the black however I wasn’t overly happy with how these ones turned out but I do like the texture the squeegee left me with and the mark making was something i possibly wanted to explore on a bigger scale.

Into this next stage of development, I wanted to explore more inro reflective surfaces. I created this first image by painting the canvas fully black. I then went in with super tacky glue and drew out circles with it, which i then applied silver leaf on top. Once dried I brushed the excess away leaving onto the silver on the stress with the glue.
Tumblr media
I then moved on to using transfer foil for nail art. Doing the same process as before but instead I used a pallet knife to spread the glue over the black on the canvas. I then applied a hologram foil to this one to bring in the element of colours. I did do the same thing with the next one however, I painted the glue on again to allow me to get the circular shapes. I do like how these all turned out however Im leaving more to using the balloons as my element of reflection as it is a 3D form which i prefer.

Within this stage I experimented with screen print as I missed the original workshops. I used a different of techniques such as painting the ink on and also marbling the ink. I then wanted to incorporate mirror squares to bring back and develop disco balls in a different way. I also made marked and draw on top of some using paint sticks aswell to add another visual element. I do like screen printing however not taking these forward into a final piece.

Keeping on theme with brush strokes, I wanted to play around with ‘squeegee’ art. However, couldn’t find a small enough squeegee so I found a plastic paper creaser instead to use. I used acrylic paint mixed with screen printing medium to sheer down the colours to allow the colours to layer up and create different colours the more I overlap them. I really like the unpredictable nature of this piece and the organic shapes the paint created. On the right o wanted to try recreate this acrylic painting but with paint sticks as these give their own texture on paper as they leave gaps mid stroke.

For this section of my development I wanted to explore acrylic paint mixed with bar carbonate of soda. This gives the paint a thicker gritty texture that helps enhance the texture of brush strokes. I used a typical house paint brush as they are also more corse in comparison to a paint brush made for art. I really like the textures these made especially within the yellow and the orange ones as it is from a far a standard brush strokes however up close you see all the texture and movement of the brush.

This next stage of development I wanted to create some gel plate prints in different ways.
This first one I combined prints with coloured pencil to contrast against the black print. These first 3 images of prints were created using pasting circle cuts out from tape packaging. I pressed themes onto the plate and some i removed them before printing some I didn’t. This helped give me a verity of textures and shapes. I also combined this with painting directly into the plate in curved lines to mimic the circular shales from the plastic. I also wanted to experiment with printing into acetate and cellophane, which I loved how these came out as the paint wanted to resist sticking to it however it left a unique lecture behind that was unexpected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this forth image of prints I wanted I try painting onto the gel plate by covering it in dots of different coloured paints. It never turned out how I thought as I think I had applied too much paint to some which left some being bigger than others. This does however showcase the unpredictability of paint which plays into my theme of emotions being unpredictable. I combined these with an impression of the edge of a roll of tape dipped in paint to bring back the circles.
Tumblr media
I them moved onto covering the gel plate in black acrylic paint and then roll a disco ball onto the wet paint to create the textures of it onto the plate. These came out so much better than anticipated.
Tumblr media
Moving on I wanted to se how water colours would react to the gel plate, which as you can see in this fifth image of prints the gel plate was wanting to resist the paint as it is obviously water bases. I do however like how these came out so I decided to combine this on top of a gel plate impression of bubble wrap. Since the bubble wrap created circular marker with each one having a unique texture due to the plastic folds of the bubble wrap.
Tumblr media
For these prints in this sixth image I wanted to experiment with printing onto these Pantone colour post cards I had lying around. I wanted to experiment with printing onto coloured paper using a which and black acrylic. I created texture with my ink roller and glue stick caps which then outlined or filled in with black posca pen.
Tumblr media
Even though I liked how all of these turned out I again didn’t see these developing further into a final outcome. But I will keep the knowledge of how different mediums and paper textures affect the prints.

I proceeded to create som pencil drawing using a combination of bright colours. I liked how these two came out but aren’t quite what I envisioned to take forward.
Tumblr media
I moved on to going back to developing faces and emotions through stick men. I wasn’t fully satisfied by the idea or incorporating physical emotions with faces as I don’t want this project to be to literal on emotions. I want the viewer to question their emotions without influence them by incorporating faces. So I won’t be developing faces and stick men any further.

Moving on I wanted to create chaotic drawings using neon paint sticks. These were mainly for me to use paint sticks for the first time and see how they worked. Again I just drew what cam to mind and didn’t put much thought into it. I loved how colourful and carefree these came out and this are fractures I definitely want to consider closer to doing my finals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then wanted to create drawing of circles to bring back the round element into development. I do like the idea of having circles and curves within this project and plan to incorporate this into my final. However I don’t want my final to be circles only I want there to be free flowing lines along with these circles and curves.

Moving on with my development I wanted to explore the elements of circles and round objects. I decided to cut styrofoam balls in half and attach them onto a canvas board with spray adhesive in a diagonal line. I chose this composition as I wanted it to showcase the drastic change from feeling as if your at your lowest point to then feeling your at your highest highs in life.
I wanted to use my airbrush on this piece as I wanted to try get a smooth gradient between colours. I loved how this turned out. I did end up playing the background fully black and neatened on the edges however I have lost the picture of this. (It is in the studio on my desk)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I developed this onto another piece similar to this one but used modroc on top of the balls to create texture. I spray painted this one with a silver chrome spray paint. However again I don’t have the final picture of this one (also in the studio)
Even though I like how these ones turned out I didn’t see these developing further into a final piece. They never gave me the ‘wow’ fracture I was going for.
