Artist statement
Within my art practice I find myself always returning to personal issues. This body of work represents the unidentified stranger. I explore the meaning the unknown face through people that I love and changing there appearance to become unrecognisable to me. Through a variety of different mediums I create the view of stranger from the strangers perspective. I portray the personal aspect using family members and friends who I can relate to. I want the viewer to experience a change in reality, when looking through the mirror the see a stranger.

Final kaleidoscope
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the final outcome for my own kaleidoscope. The effect that I’ve created using just mirrors and a cardboard box is really fascinating. I find it intriguing how light can produce reflections and shadows. The only downside to my my final installation is that it’s impossible to take photos without the camera being visible in the mirrors . I set up my installation in college so that each person could view themselves in it and see how their face becomes a stranger.

Outcome video 2
The effect these lenses make really excites me, I love hallucinatory vision that’s created just from the different positions. I like the fact I can use my phone to film and still capture the effect it gives.

Large scale lenses
Tumblr media
After making the toilet roll lenses i decided to go bigger and see what effect a larger scale would create. I’m really happy with the outcome of these and I love the videos that were produced.

More images taken using the mirrored lens, focusing on different features of the face. The lens creates different colours and effects depending on what feature is used .

Reflective project statement
On receiving the brief, I found myself to be rather disoriented and lacked initial ideas for the project. This project did make my perspective change a lot, thinking of new ways I could identify the stranger. I started exploring ways to change the appearance of someone I know so well and making them unrecognisable into a stranger. The kaleidoscope effect became of much interest and intrigued me. I created a kaleidoscope type object that would completely change the way a person looked and would make them a stranger. In relation to the brief I feel I have managed to portray a project that was relevant and feel I created a successful body of work.a I created a metaphor of change .

Using toilet rolls and filming them with mirrors to create a type of lens that would distort my face and create an illusion. I loved the image these created when places over my phone camera.

We went into a really lovely gift shop in Edinburgh and in the kids section I found lots of mini kaleidoscopes so I thought I would take advantage of it and get some quick photos. Now I’m home I regret not buying them as they would have helped with my own version.

Vincent Van Gough Exhibition
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went to Edinburgh the other day to visit the Van gough exhibition. It was amazing. The emotions it makes you feel, I felt it was so powerful and almost quite sad hearing about his life and his mental illness. I came out feeling so inspired yet also quite depressed. It’s a really nice atmosphere the way everyone sits or lies on the floor just taking in their surroundings.

The exhibition had a sunflower room which was filled with mirrors. This really reminded me of my project

Development of kaleidoscope
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beginning to create my own kaleidoscope using a cardboard box and mirror tiles I bought previously.
Currently ran out of mirrors so got 30 new ones on the way. Hoping to maybe try out a couple different forms? The current one I’m making will only have one open space therefor you will be able to see my phone/ camera if I take photos so my idea was to make a second one that has two open ends that you can look out of.
I am really liking how this could turn out, just hoping the end result will be what I’m picturing in my head.
Another question is, do I add different light sources and colour?

kaleidoscope effect
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got an app on my phone that mimics the lens of a kaleidoscope so I took some images to see how it worked and how I could maybe make my own using mirrors.

Using a mirror in different ways to see how it would effect the overall appearance of my face. Finding that water does work quite well and I could maybe incorporate this in a larger scale.

Decalcomania experiments

I actually really love how these prints turned out I think the watercolour gives it a soft touch instead of using thick acrylic. They do look rather unusual however that is the purpose of this technique.

Kaleidoscope effect
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started to think about different ways mirrors and light can be used to make different shapes and change the form of an object.
A kaleidoscope is tube consisting of mirrors and coloured glass which produces changing symmetrical patterns when you look through it .
I thought this could be a good idea to look at symmetry? Using mirrors. I could maybe create a kaleidoscope sort of image that contains parts of a face.

I found these two artists in a book of mine and they use the same kind of kaleidoscope effect, I thought it was quite interesting and wondered if I would create something like this.
