“I am just happy that he did not drain me.” she admitted softly, thinking about what the vampire could have done to her if things had gone too far. She looked up at him when he smiled at her and then looked at her book, nodding as she opened it and flipped to a page. 

“This is a hippeastrum flower,” she said as she turned the book to show him the flower she had found and loved. “It is so cheerful and happy.” she turned the page to another flower, showing him. “This is a cattleya orchid, I love the colors, and it is so fancy looking.” she smiled as she brushed her finger along the petals. “Would you like to look at them?” she asked, moving her legs so he could sit on the bed with her if he liked. 

          While looking at the flowers Angelonia was showing him, Robert recognized the look of the first one, but not the name. “Oh the hippaestrum kind of looks like an amaryllis flower, are they in the same family?” he asked, smiling lightly before sitting in the space she made for him. “I’d love to look,” he answered gently as he sat close so he’d be able to easily see the flowers on the pages she showed him. 

          “Are there any that have a special significance to you? Like, someone special gave it to you or you found it somewhere special?” he asked with genuine curiosity, wondering what other interesting kinds of flowers she had saved in the pages of her book.

“I do not,” Angelonia replied as she looked up at the biology professor with a small smile. “He was a vampire, he took much blood and then gave me some of his.” she explained. “It made it so I did not die, so the worst of the injuries were not as severe.” she said, looking back at her book. 

“I am happy you found my book though,” she said again, looking up to smile at him. “When I go home, to England, I will take my book home with me to show my family all of the amazing new flowers and plants I have seen.” she explained. 

          Her recollection of what was done to her, apparently by a vampire, made Robert nod a little. It was at least a little merciful of him to give her his blood so she’d heal a little easier, but he was surprised that a vampire managed to go without completely draining her. “Well, I guess that was....considerate,” he offered hesitantly, trying to be helpful.

          When she changed the subject back to her book and smiled at him, he couldn’t help but smile back. Her smile was so sweet and genuine that it was contagious, especially when hearing her say what she would do with it. “That’s great, I’m sure they’re gonna love that. Do you have a favorite one in your book?” he asked, wanting to keep the conversation on something positive for her to focus on.

Rowan actually had to lean on the mop for a minute, the mutual laughter quickly turning into a case of the giggles.  As well as a case of an already active imagination running wild, the human gasping out - “Gods, do you think they’d go to a sommelier school for that position?”

At Robert’s question though, she shook her head and started to run the mop along the floor again.  Though she had to admit herself curious as to just how dirty or stupid of a joke the shifter could come up with.  “Please, do tell me about the woman’s first trip to the gynecologist.”

          Robert snickered to himself when Rowan asked him to tell the joke he remembered, trying to keep his composure so he could tell it with as much of a straight face as possible. “Okay, okay,” he started before taking a deep breath and letting it out to calm his laughter. “So this lady goes to the gynecologist for the first time, and she’s super nervous about it. She has no idea what to expect, and she gets in the exam room in the gown with her legs up in the stirrups and everything, then her doctor comes in and he can tell right away that she’s nervous. 

          So he comes in and goes ‘Alright miss, so you’ve never been here before?’ and the lady says ‘No, this is my first time,’ and her voice is all shaky. So the doctor says ‘You know women come in here all the time and it’s totally normal to be nervous, but if it’ll make you feel better and relax, I can give you a ‘nummer’, and she says ‘Oh that’s probably a good idea, yeah let’s do that.’ So the doctor leans in and puts his head between her legs and goes ‘NUMNUMNUMNUMNUMNUM!’” To help with the punchline, Robert held his hands up on either side of his head and rapidly shook his head back and forth before starting to laugh at the ridiculous joke, hoping Rowan would get it and think it was funny too.

Rowan’s enthusiastic giggling echoed off the walls and back to her even as she continued to run the mop along the mess she’d made, having to pause every so often to catch her breath.  “Gods, I have no idea what would make someone’s semen taste oaky.  But I’m also fairly sure that the doctor’s not too concerned about taste tests.  That would be a helluva lab tech position.”

Yes, the conversation was strange.  But so was she.  The human enjoyed bordering on the line of ridiculous, especially when it came to conversation with company that she enjoyed.  And Robert was definitely included in that.  “I wonder if there is a way to ensure consistency.  Pay men to only drink pineapple juice and then bottle it to be sold in grocery stores?”

          “What kind of self-respecting doctor would NOT be concerned about a semen taste test?” Robert asked in feigned horror before he practically doubled over laughing at the absurdity of the question, not to mention the conversation as a whole. It had been a while since he’d had a really good laugh like this and he was suddenly very aware that he really needed it.

          After taking a moment to collect himself, though he was still doing a fair amount of chuckling, he commented, “The idea of that lab tech position and dirty doctors just reminded me of that really dumb joke about the woman’s first trip to the gynecologist. Have you ever heard that one?” he asked through his laughter that he was trying to keep reigned in.

Rowan’s grin was broad as the professor laughed along with her, once again proving that seemingly useless trivia still had a place in the world.  “I wonder if semen is considered vegan.  Humans are essentially animals as well, so if honey isn’t vegan then why would semen be?  Both are ‘excreted’ so to speak.”  Any attempts to hold in her laughter were lost at that moment, the sound echoing off the walls even as she dropped the mop with a wet fwap onto the floor.

“I mean, you make a fair point.  And it makes consistency with any of the recipes impossible!  What if the semen I used had an oakier taste than the sample the author did?  Or a fuller body?”  Maybe she was applying wine terms to bodily fluids, but she was honestly too tickled to stop herself.

         Rowan’s use of wine terms in regards to semen made Robert let out a little snort before shuddering slightly. “God, what the hell would have to be in someone’s diet for their semen to be ‘oaky’? Are they okay? Honestly, that person should probably see a doctor,” he thought out loud before laughing again. 

          “But yeah, that’s another good point - consistency. Not everyone has the same body chemistry so the likelihood of someone’s recipe turning out exactly the same as someone else’s with this particular...method is pretty slim,” he agreed before pausing thoughtfully for a moment, trying to remember if he’d ever had a stranger conversation. He was sure he must have in the time that he’d been there, but nothing was immediately coming to him.

“Did you know,” she started, hands busy as she found the mop and a thankfully clean bucket full of soapy water in the closet.  Not exactly inclined when it came to the housekeeping arts, it was a bit of a struggle to get both rolled out of the closet while Robert held it open.  “There is actually a cookbook that exists out there that teaches you how to cook with semen?”  That had been a particularly interesting time in her daily adventures with Google.  “It’s called Natural Harvest or something like that.”

          Robert laughed lightly at the little tidbit before sighing with a shake of his head. “You know, somehow that doesn’t surprise me. I mean, they seem to make cookbooks for everything these days,” he pointed out with a slight hint of disbelief in his voice. “I hear they even make vegan cookbooks,” he joked, though his tone was totally deadpan. 

          He made sure to hold the door open wide enough for Rowan to get through with the bucket and mop, closing it carefully behind her and checking that the door would still open when she would eventually go to put the supplies back. “I can’t even think of what it would add to any dish if you were to throw semen into the mix, that’s just so weird,” he commented with the most confused look on his face as he tried and immediately regretted trying to think about it.

Romy sighed deeply when he set his own book onto her desk and then walked away from her with her skateboard. “Worst trade ever.” she mumbled as she sat back down, not looking at the people around her, instead opening to the page he’d told her to open to and sighing again as he began to lecture. 

When the class was over that day she waited for everyone else to leave before she closed the textbook and walked up to the front, holding the textbook up for him to see. “Just bringing this back,” she told him. “Maybe we could trade?” she nodded to her skateboard, sitting on his desk still. 

          Robert was gathering the papers on his desk together in a nice, neat stack when Romy came up to him. He gave her a small smile and took the textbook when she held it out to him. “I haven’t seen you in my class before,” he started, not acknowledging her skateboard right away. “I hope you were able to follow along okay from where we were, but I want to talk about the section you slept through,” he continued, making sure to not sound upset or irritated. In fact, his tone was gentle and almost concerned.

          “I don’t want to pry or anything, but if you’re falling asleep on the first day of my class, I assume something might be off somewhere. So I just want to check, are you okay?” he asked as he finally reached to grab her skateboard, not handing it over yet in case she wanted to talk first.

“I mean, I’ll never say no to food, whether I’m the one paying for it or not.”  But her smile was broad as Robert went along with the joke she couldn’t quite stop herself from making.  “The semen sample would just be the icing on the cake, so to speak.”  The last statement was thrown over her shoulder as she went to open the closet that held the janitorial supplies, not wanting to leave it to someone else to finish up with the mess.

          Robert chuckled at Rowan’s joke before walking to the closet behind her, in case she needed an extra set of hands to hold anything. “Yeah, then suddenly that makes it a whole different kind of dessert, doesn’t it?” He grinned in amusement while he held the door open for Rowan so she could gather whatever she needed...well, he was more leaning against the door with his shoulder so his hands could be free in case she decided to hand anything to him.

“Well damn, if I knew it would be that easy, I would have asked a long time ago.”  Her eyes too are on the floor, surveying the mess that had been created and satisfied that they’d done all they could without a mop.  Only then did her gaze flick back up to Robert, smile clear as well as her teasing tone.  “Y’know, sanitized cups might work a little better.  Mind giving me some semen while you’re at it?”

          Rowan’s joking request took a moment to sink in for Robert, but when he realized it was in fact a joke, he snickered a little bit before wiggling his eyebrows suggestively, playing along with it. “Well, if you buy me dinner first and bring a cup with you, maybe you can get it from me yourself,” he suggested with a teasing tone of his own, chuckling lightly at his own joke.

“Hopefully only in good ways,” Rowan chuckled back, finishing up cleaning up her mess as she considered his offer.  It had taken her some time to befriend all the variety of supernatural species on the island without using her position.  And some had left since.  “Gods, yes please.  Do you mind being my shifter sample first?”

        “Yeah, I guess we’ll see,” he chuckled before looking around on the ground to make sure they hadn’t forgotten to pick up anything. He looked back at Rowan when he was confident their mess was adequately cleaned up and nodded at her request. “Yeah of course, that’s not a problem,” he agreed easily, with no hesitation. “Just give me a cup and let me know when you need it,” he added, half jokingly with a chuckle and gesturing vaguely to her collection of now empty cups.

“Don’t lie, I don’t snore,” Romy replied as she rubbed her hands over her face before clearing her throat. “I uh, mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell?” she asked hoping that was something he’d said at some point during the lecture. 

She’d had a long night, an early morning, and now she was sitting in this class, trying to better herself and she was falling asleep. Her face burned red and she shook her head before licking her lips. “I should- I’m gonna go.” she said as she scooped up her notebook and then backpack, realizing her skateboard was closer to him than it was to her, she shifted slightly before gesturing to the board. “Can you…?” 

          Her attempt made Robert close his eyes slowly with a heavy sigh before running a hand down his face with a slight nod. “Well, that’s more of a high school biology topic, but at least it’s biology,” he commented, trying not to sound too exasperated as he noticed the bright shade of red her cheeks were turning.

          He looked down at her skateboard when she gestured to it, wondering briefly if it was still a common thing for people to skateboard everywhere they went, before leaning down to pick it up but not handing it over just yet. “Hey, slow down, you don’t have to leave,” he told her gently as he set his textbook on her desk and lightly tapped the cover. “Open that to page 235 and try to follow along from where we are now, then come talk to me about the first half that you missed, okay?” he instructed her, his tone even and matter of fact before he made his way back to the front of the classroom, putting her skateboard on his desk so she’d have a reason to want to hang around and finish at least today’s class.

Romy had slept through a lot in her twenty six years; living in what was essentially a frat house would do that to you. Not to mention Venice Beach wasn’t exactly the most relaxing place in the world. Sure, people were depicted as relaxed but she couldn’t count the number of times some drunk idiot would break a beer bottle over someone’s head, take a girl hostage and have to have the swat team break the door in to the house next door. Plus her friends were the kinds of guys who slept where they fell, herself included, and when someone would wake up, they didn’t think about the passed out sleeping roommates, they’d start playing video games, they’d start mixing mid-morning margaritas- hell, RJ once assembled a drum kit in the middle of their bedroom and started playing it while a parade marched down the boardwalk. And Romy had learned through all of that how to sleep through anything. 

But another thing Romy had learned to do was to wake up at the softest touch. See living with seven guys doesn’t exactly put you in a position not to get pranked, and as a girl, Romy did not escape the pranks. Once after streaming for 24 straight hours and falling asleep on the futon they took the mattress of the futon, carried it out to the boardwalk, posted her location on her twitter and let fans take pictures of her for donations. That was one of the better ones aamong the usual, wake up to being given a wedgie so hard it literally ripped the underwear off of your body, wake up having your mattress flipped while you’re plastic wrapped to the mattress, wake up to someone shaving part of your head- she rocked a nice side buzz for awhile from that one- but now Romy woke up at the slightest touch. So when Robert touched her, she jumped up, eyes open, brain not fully awake, but processing, trying to figure out the threat level before everything seemed to come into focus and she sighed running a hand over her buzzed head. “Fuck-” she said tiredly. “I- I fell asleep didn’t I?” 

          When the slightest touch from him made his new student practically jump out of her skin, Robert took a small, startled step back as he raised his hands so they weren’t anywhere near her. “There we go, welcome back to the waking world!” he greeted her with a slight chuckle as he saw her trying to process being awake again from the expression on her face. He nodded at her question and moved to stand a little more in front of her desk than off to the side. 

          “Yeah, I think you must have for a little bit, based on how loud you were snoring,” he answered as he drummed his fingers lightly on the cover of the textbook still in his hands. “Do you happen to remember where I lost you, or what we were talking about at all so I can try to get you caught up with everyone who stayed awake?” he asked with a shrug, not meaning to sound as condescending as he did, but he didn’t appreciate people falling asleep in his class so he was a little annoyed. Especially since this was the first time he had seen her in his class.

When he asked if she was okay she shook her head. “No.” she replied as she opened the book, looking at her pressed flowers that had dirt- and in the case of one hibiscus flower blood- all over them. “A master beat me very badly,” she explained. “I am in very much pain.” 

          Robert sighed with a sympathetic look on his face. He knew how things worked at this school, but even after all this time he had a tendency to worry for the slaves knowing how intense and volatile a lot of masters could and would be.

          “I’m sorry, I know some of them can overdo it sometimes. Do you know who it was?” he asked gently, wanting to give her the opportunity to talk about it if she felt the need to. She wasn’t looking to be in the best shape, so he thought it might help her mentally at least a little bit to discuss it a little with someone who was willing to listen.

So the school was different, but it didn’t change the fact that it was a school, and as far as Romy was concerned, she should try and take as many classes as she could. So when she saw that she could audit a biology class she decided, why the hell not? And found her way to the class to see what it was all about. It had been awhile since high school biology, and back then she’d spent more time flirting with her lab partner (Isabelle Stevens, with the cute freckles- whatever happened to her?), than paying attention, so while the professor talked and talked about things she didn’t understand Romy leaned her cheek against her palm. And then laid her arms on the desk and rested her chin on her arms, still watching him, before she finally laid her head down on her arms and quickly fell asleep, softly snoring through the professor’s lecture.

          As Robert went on with his lecture, easily detailing the ins and outs of genetic makeup of certain species and really getting in the rhythm of how he was explaining it, he was suddenly thrown off by the undeniable sound of someone not only sleeping, but snoring in his class. He did a quick scan of the room to figure out who it was as he continued talking, easily finding the source being the new student with their head down on the desk. 

          “Sorry, one minute guys,” he apologized to the class as he grabbed the large textbook from his desk and walked to the snoozer’s desk, before opening it towards the middle of the book and slamming the book closed with a loud clapping noise right by her face. This method was his most reliable way of waking up anyone who dozed off in his class, so he was very surprised when she didn’t even flinch in her sleep from the loud noise. He did a quick double take and looked at his students to see if anyone was as confused or surprised as he was before leaning down and lightly nudging the student’s shoulder with a very gentle, “Excuse me?”

“That is exactly what that smell is.  I don’t know why it’s surprising to me that werewolf urine smells particularly strong, considering they mark their territory, but uh. Yeah, it is.”  Rowan was grateful that he seemed if anything, nonplussed about the mess.  And happy that he took the towel and focused on the bigger picture, answering his question with a sigh.  “I’m going to need to collect more now.  But easier to get these samples than most of the rest, peeing in a cup is kind of standard for a lot of people now I guess.”

          Robert nodded slightly at Rowan's point about werewolves as he kept patting himself dry where he could. "Well, I'll probably have the attention of every of every werewolf here until I get these clothes into the laundry," he thought aloud with another little chuckle. "Do you want a hand when you recollect? It looks like you lost a good number of samples and I know how tedious it can be to get them," he offered, more than willing to do something to make things easier and at least a little faster for her research.
