❗ "... Would you have ever... Walked by my side?"
“No.”
The words felt heavy as they left her mouth. A part of Byleth wished she could lie, but her heart simply wouldn’t let her. FRANKLY SPEAKING, Byleth was certain that if she ever saw the Flame Emperor again she would have surely undoubtedly killed them. Even now the sight of her father’s lifeless body hanging limply in her arms was burned into Byleth’s memory. Knowing that Edelgard had been allied with the group that had caused his death, brought forth such raw hatred, such extreme, vicious hatred, that she could barely contain it.
PERSONALLY, Byleth couldn’t care less about what Dimitri did or didn’t do with Edelgard, but she wouldn’t sit back and watch him as he lost himself and let hate consume him. She had no intention of seeing him in any more pain because of Edelgard. Dimitri had lost enough of himself already. The professor turned toward her former student. “What makes you think I’d ever do that? Side with you?” her voice was raw with emotion and disbelief. It was way too late for that. When all she can remember is the hatred she felt for her. “I would have never walked by the side of my father’s killer.”
As far as Byleth was concerned, Edelgard was an enemy because she is the Flame Emperor. Her heart was closed to her. There was no going back. Nothing could fix the damage. ’My father can never come back.’ Byleth shifted in her seat and crossed her ankles, clutching her hands together. She tried to stop the trembling inside her. She tried to shake off the memory of cradling her father’s lifeless body in her arms. Byleth took a deep breath. Her brow creased as she struggled to reign in her emotions. She had to clench her hands and press them over her eyes. Tears tried to build there, but she wouldn’t let them. She did not trust herself to not be tempted by the idea of hurting Edelgard.
THIS WAS ALL FOR CLOSURE. She reminded herself. She had left her sword behind for that very reason. ’Calm down,’ she told herself over and over, forcing her body to steady its breathing. ’Just breath.’ It took several minutes until Byleth could collect herself. Controlling her emotions without Sothis was proving to be difficult. Since the day their soul became whole again, a dam worth of years of dormant and unknown emotions had opened up inside of her. ’Sothis’. she calls out to her friend, she isn’t surprised ⧼ but still it hurt ⧽ when no voice answered back.
“Is that all you wanted to ask me?”

SHARENA
Studying is an important part of being in an academy, she’s learned… unfortunately. A head propped up on her hand, and her writing utensil lazily doodling on the page of her notebook, she sits at her desk, half asleep. Alfonse was always more studious than her. Her leg is bouncing; she can’t sit still. She’s supposed to do some homework, and though she’s all for learning new things but does she have to do it by reading and taking notes?
Sharena groans and rubs her forehead. “Oh, come on. This is so boring…” A glance at the door, and she realizes nothing is keeping her from taking a quick walk. That’d be nice—no, a run would be nicer. Mossy eyes look down and then back to the door. A shrug of her shoulders, and she’s out of her chair—wood creaks as she stands—and at the door. She tugs on the handle. Nothing happens. Another tug. The door isn’t opening. Her jaw drops. “Oh no. Am I stuck in here? This isn’t good…"
With a quick look over her room, she realizes that there’s nothing here to open the door. Although… "What if I break it DOWN—” With a running start, she throws herself at the door, and though it does make solid thump it does not budge. Another plan, she needs another plan.
Sharena is quick to act. She slips out her window—there aren’t any glass panels—and starts bouldering down the side of the dorm building from the second floor. It’s not hard, she just sticks to the windowsills of the other rooms, dropping, sliding, and then she lands on the ground with a soft “Oof!"
She wipes her hands off. "Ha! Easy as pie.” Especially in the dead of night. Congratulations, Sharena. She turns around, shoulders held back and head held high in triumph. When— “Agh!”
Someone is standing right behind her. “You startled me!”
Byleth never thought that she was going to be in charge of a group of students. Though it didn't take long for her to adapt, it wasn't remotely close to her usual job. While it wasn’t the first time she had been in a leadership role, she had never done anything like teaching before. In her life as a mercenary, she was her father’s right-hand. She was trained to take over his duties as leader of the group if anything were to happen to him. The reason being that he always wanted her to have a place to which she would belong.
Did all the fathers voice their concerns about the future of their children like hers did ?
“...”
Byleth looked up at the night sky and saw that the moon is out and it was full. She realized she was lucky enough to have a father. She was raised by a father who cared for her, but not many others shared the same experience. Yes, even in a place as big as this, she found that it was no different. She needed to tread carefully. She suspected that the topic of ' family ' could be a touchy subject for most of her students. She glanced at the roster. Again, she read their names and all of her notes.
Her head tilted to one side in thought. But what else can she ask them ? It was essential that she formed a closer bond with them for her mission. Yet it wasn't always the easiest thing to come up with a topic to talk about that would cater to their interests. Byleth breathed in the cold night air deeply, her breath billowing out in soft white clouds. Maybe she could ask them to join her for tea after class ?
«They all like tea.»
Or was it better to ask them to go to the sauna together instead ?
«That too is okay ?»
She was about to ask Sothi—
— THUMP — ! ! !
“?”
Byleth wondered who could be making so much noise at this hour. She turned her head toward the sound. Only to stare impassively at the familiar figure that crawled out of the library’s window. She watched as her student expertly climbed her way down from the second floor. Byleth put the roster and her notes away. She kept her eyes fixed on Sharena. Byleth walked closer to her. Not wanting to distract her, she stood still and remained quiet from the ground floor, silently taking mental notes on the new discovery.
«She likes to cli—»
❝ Agh ! ❞
«Oh.»
Sharena reached the ground.
“I didn’t mean to startle you.” Byleth met her eyes directly. “Was the door locked inside ?” she asked calmly, her head tilting. How did no one else notice that a student was locked up ? But a little more to the puzzling point, Byleth didn’t believe Sharena to be the studious type. To think she'd have been studying until late at night, to the point that she'd found herself locked up.
