Doppelgängers

In Feuerhelm’s account, I hear the most of all the fear of photography’s power to duplicate things and events beyond comprehension and beyond use. We seem to be creating an entire copy of our everyday which is being stored away somewhere...but for what purpose? The writer Jorge Borges had a lifelong fear of mirrors, once writing (while attributing it someone else, as he often does): "mirrors and copulation are abominable because they increase the number of men". Feuerhelm and Borges both seem to demonstrate a fear of the doppelgänger, German for ‘the one who goes in my place’. At once, the doppelgänger is a dark inverted force, and eerie parasitic encounter, the notion of a ‘big me’ or my ‘little me’, the ways in which we insert ourselves into cultural heritages, or fashion ourselves as products of them. It is the evil twin, the spooky twin, the spooky ‘too much’ or  ‘too often’ friendship, the hidden affect we keep behind our appropriate public personae, or the rival whom one learns to accept. It is what we create when we hold the camera in front of our faces, or when we search fastidiously through the scraps of our own culture, hoping to reconstruct or recreate ourselves from the flotsam.
