I did Markarth for the first time a couple days ago and honestly it gives me hope because not once, but TWICE did they bullshit back from the dead the same guy (Verandis Ravenwatch) which means they have the mental fortitude to do it with Tharn (who unlike Verandis isn’t even a confirmed death). Oh AND Arana from the same dlc.

Speaking of which. He was completely unfazed that he was back. He just immediately locked in. Dude just stood up, saw he was alive, didn’t even comment on it and was like “Alright Gwendis. What the fuck are we doing today” what a legend

Regarding Tharn’s Fate, pt 1

Pt 1 is going to be based on just the canon. No OC stuff—that’s all in pt 2 if I make a pt 2. But obviously there are headcanons because it’s a theory and that’s essentially what headcanons are, so…

So here’s my solution to what the fuck happened. All we know for sure is that he disappeared, nobody actually witnessed a death, not even Nahfaalar who is really the only one who could’ve. The leading theory in universe is that like the Prideholm itself, Tharn was basically severed from linear time. He still exists, but can’t be perceived currently. Since all this BS involves dragons this allows us to go into some weird time shenanigans:

Tharn did die while containing the explosion, but simultaneously lived. He effectively becomes a counterpart to the Vestige, but unlike the Vestige who is of Daedric origin, he is of Aedric origin. Vestiges other than the vestige have existed before (see the soul shriven), but this is as far as I know the first example of an aedric equivalent since the aedra do not have corporal forms (they’re dead, in a sense). I’ll admit I don’t know too much about aedra lore but I’m sure something exists that this could line up to.

Tharn is now all versions of himself at once (versions as in, time wise. Not alternate dimension stuff). He can make himself appear as any age up until his death, take on any appearance or form he once had. He’s going to take advantage of this to manifest at his peak performance, because why wouldn’t he? He’s also effectively immortal. If he is killed, he just reverts to a state where he’s alive. Schrodingers Tharn.

So now he’s basically this extratemporal entity that defies time and can’t be perceived by those obeying time. Obviously, he can’t do with that, so he works on a solution. He somehow manages to enter time again, probably dependent on some event that only occurs under certain circumstances, which is why he can’t just appear right after his death and be “You really thought the great Abnur Tharn could be bested by a mere explosion? I grieve for you. You’re more naive than I thought.” He has to reenter time at a certain point in time, if that makes sense.

Once he does, he makes himself outwardly appear the age he was at his death so that suspicions aren’t raised. This isn’t really something you want to be public knowledge. But eventually a day is going to come where he’s probably going to have to fake his death because there’s only so much you can do like this.

He can now opt to do a lot of different things. He can go into hiding, or assume a different identity by appearing visually younger. Realistically nobody is going to recognize him and logic helps build an illusion of “yeah there’s no way this is that guy I met 200 years ago.” So from there I propose this:

Originally in development, Tharn was supposed to go insane after working with the Amulet of Kings for a long time and basically become Zurin Arctus. They scrapped this which I think is a good thing because even though it’s an interesting concept it discredits the character of Zurin by saying “oh yeah he was this guy all along isn’t that funny?”

But what if Tharn knew Arctus? Maybe he trained him at some point in his younger years? Does Arctus even know who his mentor actually is? There’s a lot of plot potential here. Just a thought though, obviously they don’t need to have a connection at all other than Arctus being Tharn’s successor as Imperial Battlemage of Tamriel.

And then another question: What the fuck is Tharn doing during the 4E dragon crisis? Because now we’ve established that this bastard would definitely be alive. Actually other than the Vestige (who is also immortal) he’d be one of the only living confirmed Dragonslayers still alive. Another point of speculation. Of course he could just be chilling somewhere in hiding because this would be 800 years later and motives change in that amount of time. Though I’m sure his core trait of “keep the empire alive” would still be intact.

And then you go back 200 years… there happens to be another Tharn in the same position he and Arctus had. Who happens to be a big pain in the ass. What’s he thinking then? (Though Jagar Tharn could’ve been lowkey based, there’s a whole theory that I enjoy about how he was actually covertly trying to stall the Oblivion Crisis but that’s a different topic).

Blenwyth is Tharn’s older brother in spirit and was probably best man at all 8 of his weddings. He’s the only constant in this man’s life other than political turmoil lol
