REFLECTION

Reflection

I hope my design can encourage every participant to be a light in someone else’s life. I learnt the thinking of parametric and generative design and the analysis of input/process/output. That is the future of design, creating a game rule and let the system do the design. In this studio I see the future. I learnt how to code in creative way with the creative coding language: Processing. I also learnt the way to debug and how to make the machine run under my control. How cool it is!

I may take this design future, to build an automatic censorship to the rude and offensive messages may happen in this project due to uncontrolled human input risks. Then I can open the permission that people may write into the database and people can read the message to inspire other people. I also would like to develop with other social media’s API and then people can input their message by other social media easier by #project119105. I also would like people to write their story behind their message in the white card bellow the balloon. 

I’d like to introduce more functions:

Black Balloons 

You can write down what you are suffering or feeling down about. These balloons can be replied by the others.

Finding more similar light.

Hidden function 

When clicked the balloon that you picked, the algorithm is going to show more similar message or about the same theme.

“Thanks being my light!”

Put more helium into the balloon and push the balloon to fly higher. Inspiration from the real nature of helium balloon. It won’t stay in the sky forever, but it can bring the joy to people. Also in this project, people can break this physical rule, to put more helium into the balloon and keep it longer in the sky if people are inspired and appreciate this. Then, more people can be inspired by this.

ARTIST STATEMENT

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

This work is an interactive parametric installation sharing love, hope and caring message. In the physical version of this work, participants are asked to write their inspirational message on the LED balloon to the others and leave the light balloon in a dark space for other participants to view. The virtual version is a website providing people a space to share their inspirational messages to each other and receive the motivation from other people. 

The physical one is made with people’s input (writing on the LED balloon with a marker) and people’s movement (the location they leaved LED balloons in the dark room). The virtual installation is made with p5.js which accesses database (.csv) includes inspirational messages created by participants and bible verses picked from Holy Bible resource, and creates an interactive webpage on the web hosting displays these messages randomly on random “balloon” to the users.

In this installation, the balloon and the light it has are the carriers and symbolism of one inspirational message that people may share with others. Though the balloon’s weight is very light and the light from the LED is not very bright, but it can eliminate the darkness in the room and give someone else’s life some inspiration. The more balloons in the room, the less darkness is in the room. The more caring we share, the less darkness is in people’s heart. This installation aims to encourage every participant to share their carings, love and inspiration, support them to be light in someone else's life. They can witness lights they made can eliminate the darkness at the same time. The idea of this work is based on a Bible verse: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. (Psalm 119:105)” This work was inspired by my personal experience that others’ supporting message and caring to me and the power I gained from bible verses changed my life hugely, from a lonely, anxious and hopeless young boy, to a man who is willing to share love and carings to others.

FINAL WEEK (29 May)

Finally, I put the text on an individual balloon with Karen’s help.

Basically, I used GOOGLE SHEET to generate a JSON file. 

Then, the machine can read it by adding [] manually. I styled the text to show it on an individual balloon perfectly.

Next, I give up on FUTURA. There is some character that Futura doesn’t support on the web page. 

I used a new typeface named “Yanone_Kaffeesatz” (from google font). This looks perfect and works well with my text.

The final week(31 May)

I am so stressed that I cannot finish my project or get the effect I wanna get!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are lots of debugging need me to do…

3 most important things I need to DO:

Create the “click and then go to the individual balloon page” function, by using “if else” condition function in p5js to make the system get colour and know what is the colour of the yellow/black balloon… To make my life easier, I did re-make the SVG picture to make all of the yellow balloon’s colour in the same hue.

JSON database square bucket, need to be solved… “[]” to make the array that the machine can read…

Make “people can write in” function... I need Karen……

W10: MILESTONE REVIEW

Developing from physical installation to a virtual one.

I considered that the exhibitions is only half-day long, so no many people can enjoy the installation and my message cannot be delivered by this parametric design. As a result, I decided to build up an online virtual version of this project. Also, for the people who are waiting outside the darkroom could have a better understanding and clearer vision of my project. This website will generate some inspiration ideas for the audiences both waiting outside the physical installation and experiencing online. The screen of the computer can be a frame to see.

Problems

I am struggling with debugging. I resolved the issue about displaying image, but I was surprised when I found text was harder. I will deal with the text display. I also need to work out JSON and Database to store users’ message. It would be the hardest part of my project. Hope Karen may help me out. 

To do list

1. Use “parent” and “children” to the yellow and black balloons that people can click the balloon and enter another page. A yellow balloon to the yellow one. A black balloon to black one. The user will enter a single big balloon page that randomly picked and created by another user.

2. Try the database and keep the users’ message in the JSON. So the server can store everyone’s message in the database, also everyone can look at other’s message at the same time.

3. Keep playing with displaying text in p5.js

4. Book a room for the exhibition.

5. Design “About page” and tag.

Arduino sensors exploration:

This week, I finished an SVG Illustration for balloons which is going to be the main element in the website in Adobe Illustrator. The reason to use SVG file but not a JPG file is to reduce the loading time for the real webpage. ALSO, this saves storage and $$$ for the web hosting.

I did a few tests to display the image in the p5js and HTML page.. 

And also spent a long period of time working out how to build an easy local server in my laptop, and I helped my friend Sujin with this. “loadimage()” and “image*()” can only work in a local server.  

I finally succeeded.

That is my first try in “debugging”. It was annoying but very satisfying when I made it. I am going to link the balloon SVG file with the motion p5js page for the next step...

W6 + W7 DESIGN PITCH PRESENTATION +MAPPING

NOW it is the turning point of this semester.

My idea of my project is based on my Story.

My Childhood: Darkness

I lived under the shade of school bullying everyday, rarely seeing my parents.

I had no friendship, no one to talk with, no confidence, no courage, no freedom and rare happiness.

I felt lonely, anxious, shameful and hopeless.

My Puberty: Seeking for Light

Anxiety disorder and depressive Patient

I seek for hope, love and light. I seek for the answer of who I am, where I am and why I am.

But ended with no answer.

Chaos in my brain. Darkness in my life. Confusion in my heart.

Turning Point: “The Blind Receive Their Sight”

My grandma’s caring and kindness inspires me.

I decided following Jesus Christ just like my grandma does.

I found the answer.

There is a huge bright light shining into my heart. Everything started changing.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

After the Project Pitch Presentation, I confirmed the way I am going to develop and show my project. Thank you everyone for deciding this for me. This is the unexpected situation actually, the helium balloon idea was created the morning before the presentation. Actually, a song made me think of a balloon.

It is a beautiful Chinese song:

Though the balloon’s weight is very light, but it can bring people much happiness. JUST LIKE SOMEONE’S INSPIRING WORDS. Maybe not very long or very important but can be the light in someone's life for a while.

Finally, I chose Plan B for my project.

The next thing is to arrange the installation and buy some LED balloons (maybe in China). I will also listen to Karen's suggestions: to make an online installation as well. This may create a wider influence and let the people who cannot attend the exhibition experience my project.

In class, we also mapped everyone’s idea. It guides everyone to work and help each other.  It is a good way to help each other in the future and share information with each other to save time.
