Lorelei
Gustavo Gomes
curated by Yvonne Scheja
Sept 03 - 05, 2021
The performer, choreographer and film artist Gustavo Gomes presents at PiK - Projektraum im KunstWerk parts of his work series Lorelei and has developed for it both a new film and the live performance - Lorelei - Maneater.
In his works Gustavo Gomes repeatedly refers to well-known historical and art-historical female figures. Their actually vulnerable bodies are interpreted as dangerous objects of desire by means of social, political and historical attribution. Furthermore, the examination of gender attributions, one's own identity and corporeality play an essential role in his works. Inspired by the ballad by Clemens Brentano Zu Bacharach am Rheine and the poem Die Lore-ley by Heinrich Heine, Gustavo Gomes Lorelei depicts a series of characters who reinvent themselves in different versions of the well-known romantic fairy tale. Based on the numerous versions of this story, the film and performance series Lorelei tells it from different perspectives in Persona, Shadow, Anima and the latest installment Maneater. Gomes thereby attempts to unravel the history of seduction, guilt and defeat. Today's female figures and their bodies also refer to their recurring reduction to being a threatening sexual object and, at the same time, the transgression of boundaries that accompanies this in the form of psychological and physical violence. Maneater is the fourth and latest part of the Lorelei series of works. In collaboration with five students of the CCD- Center for Contemporary Dance of the Hochschule für Musik & Tanz Köln, a dialogue between film and performance has been created. The performers abstract the supposedly feminine connotation of seduction into pop-cultural musical scores and in this way reinforce the structural conventions of who is to blame, not only for sexual seduction. It is revealed that the motif of seduced men following women into sin or death, as well as the beautiful heroines using their bodies as weapons, is still culturally and socially embedded today.
Gustavo Gomes (b. 1988 in Brasilia, Brazil, lives in Cologne) is a performer, choreographer and film artist. He has worked with artists like Richard Siegal, William Forsythe, Jacopo Godani, Marie Chouinard or Roy Assaf. For the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum (Cologne), Hellerau - European Center for the Arts (Dresden), Frankfurt Lab Festival (Francfort) and Schauspielhaus Köln (Cologne) he developed choreographic pieces and collaborated with Esther Kläs at Art Basel, Xavier Hufkens Gallery, Watou Art Festival and KOLUMBA Kunstmuseum des Erzbistums Köln Cologne). He was a laureate of the Art Award of the Kunststiftung NRW and won prizes at the Berlin Sci-fi Film Festival, Randaward, Kinesthesia Film Festival, Other World Austin Film Festival among others.
Other contributors: Soundscape: Ulysse Zang, Gustavo Gomes Performers: Lidia Jarecka, Kilian Löderbusch, Clara Mügge, Katharina Senzenberger, Anna Simonsmeier
Lorelei - Maneater will premiere on September 5 at 5pm and will be shown as part of the festival IMPACTZONE on September 9 and 10, 2021 in the concert hall of the Hochschule für Tanz und Musik Köln.

WORMHOLE x PARASITES
blind dates: a virtual tour, culinary surprises, talks, readings and dance
Sunday, February 21, 3.30 - ca. 7 pm on zoom
Please feel warmly invited to an online event with the artist publication Wormhole on occasion of the exhibition PARASITES, which is on view at the Cologne project space PiK Deutz until February 28, 2021. The exhibition, curated by Lisa Klosterkötter in collaboration with Inga Charlotte Thiele, deals with the parasitic relationships, dependencies, and appropriations of the contemporary art scene. Who determines whom? Who enables impulses and processes? According to the French philosopher Michel Serres, all developmental impulses and processes owe themselves to a parasitic intrusion, a progressive impetus towards processes of change and transformation in an existing system. Due to the pandemic and the restrictions and curtailments of the art and culture sector, a new topicality of this subject has arisen, in the fields of culture and economy and the power imbalance therein. It features works by artists Claire Barrow, Zuzanna Czebatul, Miranda Keyes, Kinke Kooi, Magdalena Los, and Raphaela Vogel, as well as a collaboration with the Baltimore-based curatorial project Sinkhole Project. Wormhole is a newspaper by young artists that was initiated at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in early 2020 as a response to the ongoing struggles at the academy regarding sexual harassment and toxic as well as discriminatory (learning) environments and structures within the school. The recent and second issue of Wormhole, titled „Between the Lines“ brings together contributions from seven cities, spanning from London to Oslo, that address alternative modes of speaking out, as well as the realities of communication and connection produced by the Covid-19 pandemic: „The pandemic has affected most aspects of society and many of us find ourselves besides our practices, in a state of in-between. It has also revealed the relative fragility of the way society and industry was functioning pre-pandemic. We want to treat this place of in-between as a generative site for reconsidering, redefining and remaking; a transitory space, from which it is possible, also through cultural production, to envision and shape the future.“ Wormhole’s editors, Mira Mann and Anna R. Winder, together with the curatorial team of PARASITES, put together a program that aims to show and present the two formats of exhibition and publication, and thus creating a fleeting but persisting space of sharing, community and care.
