Another thesis statement of Yellowjackets, for me at least, is that no, everything doesn't happen for a reason. Sometimes planes go down. Sometimes cabins burn. Sometimes people die. And there isn't a good reason or even an explanation for it. It doesn't make anyone better or stronger, it just hurts. A lot of the time it even makes things worse, because finding the strength to be good and kind in the wake of that trauma is so fucking hard.
Speaking from experience, you don't wake up the day after you lose your best friend, your other half, and have some kind of epiphany. You don't suddenly realise that now you have to live for them and start building something positive. Most of the time, you just let the pain control you. You have to fight hard against it to create something good out of that loss. Lottie says to Mari, "You could let it be different." But then it isn't. It never really could be, because human nature is human nature. We make the same mistakes again and again. We lash out. We Other people who aren't like us, who don't think like we do. We demonise and blame the mentally ill. We mold ourselves into the person we think the people around us need or want, rather than persuing who we truly are. The truth is, you have to temper your most basic survival instincts in order to be the best person you can be.
Every death in Yellowjackets being unnecessary and even a bit stupid is very much the point. Because a lot of the time death is unnecessary and stupid, not noble or the catalyst of positive change like a lot of media tries to claim. The point is that trauma doesn't make you kind or good or better in any way. You make yourself better, if you choose to.

I can’t believe tai’s first case (of many) as a lawyer was fighting to convict her soccer coach of arson and attempted murder and almost everyone and their mother was convinced of his guilt in the beginning but she only won after the devil on her shoulder aka genghis shaun threatened the jury. Taissa Turner once again taking home the prize for most accomplished girlfailure of all time.
