AUSTRALIA’S SIMPLIFIED STUDENT VISA FRAMEWORK STARTS 1 JULY 2016
On 1 July 2016, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF) came into effect. The key changes under the recently introduced SSVF are as below: • There is only one single student visa subclass (subclass 500) for all levels of study, including primary, secondary, vocational as well as tertiary. • All students are subject to same core visa requirements, for example Genuine Temporary Entrant and health and character requirements, irrespective of assessment level of student’s country of origin. • Online visa lodgment available globally for all international students.

A reduction in the number of student visa subclasses from eight to only one same visa subclass (subclass 500) and visa subclass 590 for student guardians will make student visas simpler and easily understandable for students and migration agents. Online lodgement of student visas to all countries will also make the visa application process much easier and efficient.
The new Simplified Student Visa Framework will also enhance integrity in visa application process as all students will need to satisfy the same core visa requirements. The assessment of risk will now be based on a combination of risk based on the student’s country of origin and education provider risk. This will determine the evidentiary requirements for each student visa application. There is a tool on the Department’s website wherein a student can enter their country and education provider’s details, and they will be provided with a list of evidentiary requirements they will need to provide to the Department.
The move to using more electronic tools and services will save time and benefit both students and save millions of dollars in red tape.
