President Trump arrives in San Antonio for closed-door fundraiser
President Donald Trump visited San Antonio for a closed-door fundraiser at The Argyle, the exclusive dinner club in Alamo Heights.
Air Force One landed at the San Antonio International Airport in the late morning on Wednesday, where the president was greeted by numerous supporters as he walked off the plane. Trump then rode in a limousine to The Argyle behind a motorcade of police motorcycles, cruisers and ambulance trucks.
At the private club, another group of supporters was on hand to welcome him; no protesters were evident.
“Through the tinted windows, we saw him press up (against the window) and wave,” said Shari Pearson, decked in American-flag-decorated regalia and holding a Trump flag. “And of course, I saw the hair. I said, ‘That’s Donald Trump’s hair.’”
Pearson said there were about 50 people gathered near Crescent Street.

Anne McGarraugh, 48, and her mother, Diane Weigle, also came to catch a sight of the president. They said it was exciting to see the president in San Antonio.
“We love Trump,” Weigle said. “He’s doing the very best he can for this country.”
Trump’s event at The Argyle is a fundraiser. Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, traveling in Trump’s entourage, said they expect to bring in $6 million at the event.
SUBSCRIBERS: At San Antonio rally, Castro blasts Trump, calling for ‘compassion and not cruelty’ in immigration
The president’s presence in San Antonio led Julián Castro, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, to hold a rally downtown protesting Trump’s immigration policies.
Castro was mayor of San Antonio from 2009 to 2014 and also led the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Obama.
It is the president’s ninth time visiting Texas since he took office and the third this year.
After the San Antonio event, Trump headed to Houston.

Michaels Achieves Financial Closing on $61 Million Development in San Marcos, Texas
New Workforce Housing Community to be Created in the State’s ‘Innovation Corridor’
MARLTON, N.J., February 14, 2019 (Newswire.com) – The Michaels Organization, a national leader in residential real estate and the largest private sector owner of affordable housing in the country, has successfully closed on $61 million in financing for Mission Trail at El Camino Real, a new mixed-income housing community in San Marcos, Texas, that will serve the city’s growing workforce.
“The development of this important workforce housing community is possible because of the forward-thinking leadership of the City, and we are grateful for their tremendous support,” said Joseph Weatherly, Regional Vice President of Development for The Michaels Organization. “We look forward to being a part of the San Marcos community for years to come.”
Situated between Austin and San Antonio, the greater San Marcos region has attracted an impressive number of new businesses over the past decade and is home to one of the country’s fastest-growing universities, Texas State University. The Mission Trail development will be located in Hays County, the fourth fastest growing county in the country.
“We’re excited about this project becoming a reality in San Marcos, and we look forward to working with Michaels as they move through the development process,” said Mayor Jane Hughson.
“I am thrilled our City’s leadership has chosen to partner with The Michaels Organization in bringing high-quality, affordable housing to our community. Michaels’ development model, which includes their continued ownership and management, ensures well-maintained, well-located and beautifully amenitized housing is delivered to our working families, said Laura Dupont, Senior Vice President of Development & Operations at Corridor Title and Chair of the City of San Marcos Workforce Housing Taskforce. “As Chair of the Workforce Housing Taskforce, I fully understand the severe need for affordable housing in San Marcos and feel this project is a great step in the right direction for our citizens.”
The new Mission Trail at El Camino Real will be built on 30 acres of land located near the intersection of Highway 123 and Clovis Barker Road. Designed by Austin-based Kelly Grossman Architects, the community will comprise 15 garden-style buildings, offering a total of 352 rental apartment homes. Layouts for the spacious and energy-efficient apartments will range from one- to four-bedrooms, and community amenities will include a Clubhouse with pool, fitness center and business center. The community’s substantial green space will include gathering places, walking paths, and two playgrounds.
The majority of apartments will be reserved for households earning 60 percent or less of the area median income, while 10 percent of the units will be reserved for individuals and families earning less than 140 percent of the area median income. The community will also offer 35 apartments without any income restrictions.
Financing for the development includes $43 million in tax-exempt bond financing issued by Capital Area Housing Finance Corporation and $15.5 million in equity raised through the sale of Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) allocated by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. U.S. Bank is providing the construction loan and is also the LIHTC investor. Berkadia is providing permanent financing through Freddie Mac.
“This project had to close in a very short period of time, which required the focus and support of everyone involved,” said John Lisella, Business Development Officer with the U.S. Bancorp Community Development Corporation, the tax credit division of U.S. Bank. “Finding quality, affordable housing can often be a struggle in fast-growing communities where many families are already rent overburdened. Once constructed, Mission Trail at El Camino Real will help fill this need.”
A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for this Spring, with pre-leasing beginning in the fall.

Dolphin trainers at Texas State Aquarium dedicated to job
In a May 10, 2018 photo, Senior Trainer Mady Cox swims with her mermaid suit next to the dolphins at Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi, Texas. (Casey Jackson/Corpus Christi Caller-Times via AP)
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) – Mady Cox feels comfort from being able to see the Texas State Aquarium from her apartment window off Ocean Drive.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports being as close as possible to the aquarium is the reason she moved to that complex, she said.
Cox is a senior dolphin trainer at the aquarium and has been there for about three years.
She spends a big part of her 40-hour work week with dolphins, Kai, Shadow, Liko and Schooner.
And leaving them every day is the hardest part of her job, she said.
“At least I know, when I look out and see the aquarium from my place, that if something happens I can be there in just a few minutes,” the 26-year-old said. “Not knowing how they feel a lot of times is difficult, too, because we want to give them everything they deserve.
“But we try. A huge part of our job is figuring out what is going to make (the dolphins) have the most reinforcing time,” Cox said.
She is one of eight marine mammal trainers at the aquarium who look after the dolphins daily.
Other staff includes curator of marine mammals, Emma Gilbert; assistant curator of marine mammals, Sarah Zigmond; senior trainer, Samantha Pretorius; and trainers Chelsea Martino, Meritt Grusecki, Marissa Zaino and Erin Cornfield.
Although the job entails spending a lot of time with the animals, it’s not all play.
The trainers’ day starts before 7 a.m.
And by 8 o’ clock every morning, two of them are in scuba suits and dive the 450,000-gallon, 12 foot-deep saltwater pool to clean it for more than two hours to make sure it’s safe for the animals.
And they check the tank’s water quality about five times a day.
The dolphins eat about six times a day and the trainers prep their meals and make sure the animals get their vitamins.
They handle the up to 25 pounds of fish each dolphin eats daily and they inspect it, too, to make sure it’s restaurant quality.
The kitchen where everything is prepped, is cleaned several times throughout the day to prevent contamination.
The trainers also closely observe the dolphins’ behaviors and keep track of this data daily.
The Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are intelligent mammals and need stimulation. The trainers also work very hard to try fun and different activities with them every day.
For fun, Cox often wears a mermaid tail to spark their curiosity.
Other staff members serenade them with music or try something as simple as holding a mirror in front of them to give them a chance to look at themselves.
“We can’t become complacent because of their safety and we never want the day to be the same for them,” Cox said. “Constantly having to be creative for the animals is also a really big part of our job.”
And the job it’s all about dedication and genuine care for the animals, Gilbert said.
“We need to know everything that it takes to make sure that the animals are as healthy as can be,” Gilbert said. “And that we know their home, we know their water quality, we know their food and everything.”
For Gilbert, that love started at an early age. The Eagle Pass native has been working at the Texas State Aquarium for about 15 years.
She remembers the first time her mother took her to SeaWorld in San Antonio. She knew she wanted to work with marine animals from that moment.
“It was always dolphins for me,” Gilbert said. “I told my mom that this is what I’d be doing one day, and she told me I could do whatever I wanted and she’d support me.”
On top of all the daily duties, the trainers also do a show for aquarium visitors at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. daily.
And the purpose for all of it is to always develop the public’s appreciation for wildlife and inspire conservation of the ocean.
The job can be time consuming and sometimes it takes moving far away from home in order to pursue a career in animal training at zoos and aquariums.
Most of the marine mammal trainers at the Texas State Aquarium are from out of town or out of state.
That’s why trainer Marissa Zaino, 24, believes support from family and loved ones is key to make it work.
Trainers spend weekdays, weekends and holidays with the animals.
Zaino is the newest member of the team. She moved to Corpus Christi from New Hampshire less than two months ago.
“I’ve had to move a lot and leave my family but I’ve also had to leave the animals I cared about,” Zaino said. “But that’s something we have to do in order to do this job that we love.”
During Hurricane Harvey last August, the trainers along with other aquarium staff members rode out the storm in the aquarium to look after the animals.
Staff moved the animals near the Caribbean Journey exhibit for about three days and made sure they were safe.
“Not one animal expired, it was incredible,” Gilbert said. “You can see that this job is a lot of fun, but it’s a huge responsibility that we take very seriously.”
The trainers of course, have to be excellent swimmers. Get a scuba diving certification and a degree in animal science.
A background in biology and psychology is also recommended, assistant curator of marine mammals Zigmond, who has been working with animals for about eight years, said.
“Volunteer, get plenty of internships, get your foot in the door,” Zigmond said. “You have to be dedicated because our time, the weekends, the holidays, being here at 2 a.m. it’s what the dolphins need.”
And although marine animal training is a very competitive field, if you decided this is what you want to do, don’t give up, Zigmond said.
“Do not be afraid of rejection, keep trying,” the 30-year-old said.
And for anyone who wants to know more about the field, the aquarium is partnering up with Texas A&M; University-Corpus Christi to teach a conservation, welfare and research course.
The course will be offered this summer and will provide opportunities for biology students to study animal care activities at the Texas State Aquarium from both university and aquarium instructors.

2 high school students dead in San Antonio slaying-suicide
SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Police say two high school students are dead following a slaying-suicide in San Antonio.
Officials say 19-year-old Louis Nickerson fatally shot his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend Clarissa Riojas at an apartment complex Wednesday.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus says Nickerson broke into the apartment and shot Riojas to death in front of her younger sister. He says Nickerson fled to a nearby wooded area, where he fatally shot himself.
Riojas and Nickerson were both seniors at Highlands High School.
McManus says the students had ended their relationship about a week before their deaths. He says Riojas had recently stopped answering Nickerson’s calls.
A school district spokeswoman says a crisis team of counselors was sent to the school. She says staff and faculty are being watchful of anyone who may need assistance.

League Awards Smaller-Budget Orchestras & Youth Orchestras Futures Fund Grants
Highlighting the groundswell of innovation occurring at smaller-budget orchestras and youth orchestras across the country, seventeen orchestras have received $30,000 American Orchestras’ Futures Fund grants from the League of American Orchestras, made possible with the generous support of the Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation. An additional five orchestras were selected to receive seed grants of $6,000 each.
"These orchestras are in the forefront of experimentation and visionary problem-solving, and the League is proud to support this work for the benefit of the orchestra field," commented League President and CEO Jesse Rosen. "I’m grateful to the Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation for enabling orchestras to incubate innovative practice, and look forward to the knowledge and research developed around these exciting initiatives."
"We’re energized and encouraged by the momentum of our continued partnership with the League through the American Orchestras’ Futures Fund," added Lisa Delan, Director of the Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation. "The initiatives by smaller-budget and youth orchestras in this round of grants represent the range of innovation, impact, and collaboration we envisioned when we approached the League. And I am personally gratified to witness the commitment by these grantees to reach diverse populations within their communities."
The Futures Fund grantees from across the country are seizing opportunities in the current environment. These include giving life to contemporary repertoire by American composers, developing imaginative concert experiences and cross-cultural artistic programming, increasing diversity and access to music education, connecting with new immigrants and underserved populations, extending reach via digital streaming initiatives, investing in valuable audience development research, and working with multiple populations in rural and urban regions. Descriptions of the initiatives supported through the American Orchestras’ Futures Fund can be found here.
The $4.5 million American Orchestras’ Future Fund program included a first round of grants for larger-budget orchestras, announced in 2017. For this second round, smaller-budget and youth orchestras that are based in the U.S. and that are members of the League of American Orchestras were eligible to apply. An independent review panel selected the orchestras based on criteria including significant investments in organizational learning, meaningful partnerships with community organizations, and an ability to assess and adapt practices for continuous innovation. In addition to recommending seventeen orchestras for the full two-year grant, the panel recognized the creative promise that several orchestras demonstrated and designated an additional award in the form of a seed grant for five orchestras to support their continued organizational work towards the goals outlined.
This round’s Futures Fund recipients ($30,000 grants) include:
The American Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (VA) – expansion of the Music Buddies mentoring program to underserved areas, where school music provision is limited or non-existent.
The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (MA) – The Boston Modern Orchestra Project’s mission is to give life to orchestral classics of the 20th and 21st centuries, largely by American composers, that are often overlooked in the standard repertoire.
California Symphony – launch of a pilot adult education program called Fresh Look: The Symphony Exposed, marketed in English and Spanish, with on-site live Spanish interpretation.
Central Ohio Symphony – support for a program with students at Delaware Hayes High School to include increasing student concert attendance and assessing the relevance of the symphony’s programming.
Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras (IL) – support for the orchestras’ Inclusion Audit to ensure that the organization is optimally inclusive and representative of Chicago’s diverse community.
Contemporary Youth Orchestra (OH) – support for building cross-sector partnerships using programs in dance, theater, and photography to address socioeconomic barriers to children’s equal access to music education.
El Paso Symphony Orchestra (TX) – support for the Tocando After School Music Project’s Feeder School Initiative providing high-quality music education, cultural awareness, and performance opportunities to elementary and middle school students.
Empire State Youth Orchestra (NY) – launch of ACCESS ESYO, an online "pay what you can" ticketing program to meet the needs of an increasingly economically diverse membership.
Evansville Philharmonic (IN) – support for audience development research: qualitative research sessions and repeating a 2017 survey to understand change resulting from newly-instituted promotions and programming.
Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra (WI) – support for the In Harmony program for youths and adults with special needs, presenting a music-therapy informed performance at special needs classrooms and adult day centers.
Greensboro Symphony Orchestra (NC) – expansion of the OrKIDStra program, a music education series featuring tailored curriculum and site-visits by GSO musicians, to four rural counties, reaching an estimated 2,000 Head Start students.
Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (CA) – support for the Los Angeles Orchestra Fellowship, assisting persons from historically underrepresented communities to succeed in auditions with U.S. orchestras
Lima Symphony (OH) – support for an initiative bringing a series of ensemble performances and discussions with a mental health facilitator to a center for at-risk youth, a mental health treatment facility, and a housing complex for people struggling with addiction.
Lubbock Symphony (TX) – development of a new concert series designed to attract new audiences; LSO will experiment with venues, lighting, staging, electronic amplification, video, narration, and attire to create an engaging atmosphere.
New Bedford Symphony (MA) – support for an assessment of the orchestra’s educational programming which will measure the impact of a concept-based arts integrated program and explore issues that arise when assessing education programs.
Project 440 (PA) – support for a creative youth development curriculum that utilizes music as a tool to teach social entrepreneurship, leadership, and service to high school musicians, and provides them with the career and life skills necessary for success, on and off the stage.
Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (TX) – support for the Rising Star Fellows program, offering comprehensive support and resources to promising young African American, Hispanic, and Native American musicians from around San Antonio communities.
Seed Grant Recipients ($6,000):

SAN ANTONIO, TX — First: Drink responsibly. Now that that’s out of the way, you might be interested in knowing that area Applebee’s restaurants are launching the long-awaited return of their $1 margarita through the month of April — their trademarked DOLLARITA™, that is.
Budget-friendly and consistently refreshing, the cocktail is served on the rocks and prepared with tequila and margarita mix, officials said in a news release. "The Neighborhood Drink that began the dollar drink sensation, is available all day, every day while dining in at participating Applebee’s locations for the entire month of April," officials said in the aforementioned advisory.
All participating locations owned and operated by Neighborhood Restaurant Partners will participate in the offer, according to the chain’s public relations department.
"Margaritas are extremely popular with our guests, and our DOLLARITA is the most refreshing drink money can buy," Patrick Kirk, vice president of beverage innovation at Atlanta-based Applebee’s, said in a prepared statement. "We first introduced the DOLLARITA to America last October, and we’re excited to bring it back in April as a reason to celebrate the return of spring."
It goes without saying that you must be at least 21 years of age to partake. For more information on the DOLLARITA and other limited time offers from Applebee’s, view the online menu and stop by your neighborhood Applebee’s restaurant.
This promotion is available at Applebee’s locations owned and operated by Neighborhood Restaurant Partners. Participating restaurants are located in Del Rio, Kyle, New Braunfels, San Antonio (97 Loop 410 NE, 7880 IH 35 North, 1511 S.W. Military Drive, 11605 W. 1604 N and 15802 IH-10 West) and Uvalde.
