everyone has already pointed out some of the biggest flaws of this movie but one thing I keep coming back to is nile not realizing her dreams of discord might be important?? after the emphasis they put on how they dream of each other in the first film?? and especially cause its NILE. she's so perceptive!! in the first film she clocks Andy as the oldest immediately, realizes Booker has double crossed them, etc etc. you're telling me she had random dreams of an ancient library and a man being stabbed and thought nothing of it????

actually what would have been extremely funny is if instead of just forgetting the established 'immortals dream of each other until they meet', it turned out andy snuck incognito meetings with tuah with each of the guard. a random passerby who bumped into joe and apologized in the market while he was arguing with andromache. booker, blind drunk, rambling nonsense to tuah who nods gravely and tries to give him advice he simply does not remember, and wouldn't follow if he did. nicolo has her sweating bullets because nicolo Looks at everyone. she never got the chance to get nile's meeting in.
it would have added some good development for andy and her issues/moral code, a great character beat as everyone reacted (especially tuah, who badly needed to have non-exposition dialogue), kept on theme with the lies of omission and not saying what needs to be said, and would have kept the dream lore intact.

can i just say the dinner scene with their drinking and food and dice games and joe yelling that he knows andy's tells and andy shoving her hand in his face and silly goofy good time.... i love thinking that the history of old guard is just thousands of years of THAT. that is SO good to me!!

personally if i found out that one of my friends was capable of accidentally and unknowingly killing my other friends i would at least consider warning her. so that she doesn't do that and then have to deal with the horrific guilt

Been thinking about this all day, and I think the main thing this movie failed to understand about itself is this: the immortality was supposed to be the premise, not the plot.
Like, the immortality piece fuels the villains in the first film, but the unknowability of it is part of the point. It’s a dreadful curse, to outlive all your loved ones. Or, it’s a powerful gift, to grow and nurture a relationship for centuries on end. Or, it’s a complicated responsibility, a way you are uniquely positioned to help make the world a better place, and how much of that mantle should you take on? It’s the premise, the vessel through which the themes and characters can be explored.
The point was never to find out the “rules” and drop a bunch of lore about it. This movie took the premise and made it the plot, and that I think was its cardinal mistake.

i think my favorite thing about the old guard was how much and how obviously they all LOVED each other. like. the baclava scene. those first hugs between andy, nick and joe. andy cradling booker's face while she begged him to wake up, and the tender forehead-touch when he did. how they all (barring andy, who i assume was taking a guard dog-like position) slept so closely together in the church. how quick they were to all surround andy when they found out about her mortality. how KIND andy was, even when coming out to tell booker what his punishment would be. how they waited and looked to each other in relief every time they died—and how the first thing they thought of when they felt nile's presence was that they had to help her, because they all knew how scared and alone she would be feeling right then. hell, even booker's motivation for his betrayal wasn't the typical scheming double-crosser's motivation; he just wanted to help, to try and give the rest of the guard (mainly he and andy) a means of control—a way to REST. to decide when to stop on their own terms. they weren't just a team of badass immortal soldiers dedicated to protecting the earth; they were friends, with relationships centuries in the making, and it showed. they were a family.

no more "wise lesbian who just exists in the story to give sage advice to her gay friend about getting with another man" trope. its time for "lesbian who THINKS she's wise giving what she THINKS is sage advice but she is wrong. she is wrong. she is wrong. this is the worst advice anyone has ever seen, holy shit, how do you live like this? and suddenly her friend realizes he's gained a whole new understanding of why her love life is such an active dumpster fire at any given time"

one thing people need to understand about leverage is that it quite literally invented competence porn.

leverage is so funny bc its the live televised breakdown of one nate ford where he is coping with his breakdown by committing the lives of himself and his only support structure (the team) to taking down guys who are remotely similar to this one guy who antagonized them all that one time. except notably and perhaps ironically that one guy is the exact same person who got nate to assemble the team. basically leverage is like if your mutual friend brought together a bunch of his friends into a friend group, including you, except then you all realized he was shit and kicked him out. and then dedicated the next five years of your life to ruining the lives of other guys like that first friend. with corporate espionage

I know the Clone Wars more than demonstrated that Anakin and Padme had the sublety of a Bantha on a starship, but I will die on the hill that the biggest tell is Anakin's perfectly styled curly hair. That boy spent 9 years with pin straight hair and then 10 years with a mandatory close cut and rat tail, yet he can suddenly maintain perfectly styled, notoriously difficult, curls in the middle of a war???
No way. That has Padme running-through-a-battlefield-in-full-couture Amidala all over it. There is no way she would let her man have bad hair, war or not.
Obi-Wan raised that boy. He has seen every questionable choice that Anakin has made through his awkward teen stages. He has also seen Padme go through a planet wide, life and death disaster as a teenager and still maintained multiple costume changes with full hair and makeup for her and her friends.
There is no way Obi-Wan did not see Anakin suddenly have a perfect knowledge of how to maintain the long hair he has never had before and not immidiately know that Anakin has spent an inappropriately large amount of time in a bathroom with Padme. No he took one look at Anakin and knew immidiately.

we recently rewatched the Big Bang/San Lorenzo Jobs and one of my favorite things about Nate v Damien Moreau is that Moreau is always going "in a fair fight I'd crush you" and Nate keeps responding "probably, which is why I cheated like hell" and it works every time

why bother caring about the environment when 1. It’s so obviously a lost cause and 2. There’s definitely going to be a nuclear war?
And what are you doing about it Anon? Learn about ecological restoration or get out of my way.
