     he lets out a chuckle at the younger’s thinking face, finding it almost adorable if not for the fact that clement would probably turn up his nose at the thought. “i’m going as a zombie—nothing special. just some makeup and fake blood,” it’s all he can manage anyway. he isn’t the most artistically-inclined. “maybe we can stick to the undead theme…a mummy?” he suggests before looking around, scanning the books nearby for inspiration. “it’s pretty low effort but—” the words are caught in his mouth as he reaches upwards to tug a dusty paperback off of the shelf. “—actually, how about this lil’ guy?” it’s a copy of the little prince, the iconic illustration somewhat faded on the cover. “shouldn’t be too hard either, if you’re into it.” wait, did he just say sexy troll?

a zombie... how impressively bland. clement’s eyes sparkle at he looks at kay with renewed interest. it takes a special kind of person to come up with such a stereotypical costume, and while it would sound sarcastic coming from anyone else, clement genuinely means it. perhaps he should go as a zombie as well—but two people with matching costumes would no doubt draw even more attention, along with invasive personal questions. a mummy sounds marginally better, but clement doesn’t like the idea of being bandaged up. 

he’s ready to abandon the idea of attending the party altogether when kay picks up a copy of the little prince. it used to be one of clement’s favorites in years past. reaching over to take the book, clement runs his hand over the slightly dusty cover and smiles to himself. “i think this could work,” he says. it seems like a simple enough costume. lifting his head, his smile deepens as he meets kay’s eyes. “thank you, kay. you’re a lifesaver.”

blimey!! a bit late aren’t you? i think the giggle water in the ORANGE goblet seems a little sour, doesn’t it?? looks like the mild EUPHORIA potion has ripened into something else entirely, seems like it’s IMPOSSIBLE TO STAY STILL entirely now. better keep moving for the rest of the night if you don’t want to doom yourself!! poor thing.

    kay finds a smile on his lips at the sight of the ravenclaw, setting down his book in favor of his friend’s presence. “i don’t think so, but you’ll probably stand out more if you don’t dress up,” he thinks that’s what clement’s after anyway. “i’m not putting very much effort into my own costume, so don’t feel pressured.” kay can see him as many things, but he isn’t sure if he’ll be willing to accept most of them. “we can come up with something together, if you’d like.”

the thought of standing out among hogwarts’ mass of colorful characters is daunting; clement leaves the spotlight to others and is content to live his life out in the background, just one bland and ordinary face in a sea of many. “you’re right,” he says, rubbing his chin in thought. “what are you going as?” he has a higher opinion of kay than of some of his peers and trusts his ideas won’t be... trashy. hopefully his faith in the man isn’t misplaced. “i wouldn’t mind. as long as it isn’t something sexy, like a...” what’s a suitable example? “sexy... troll...” that sounds about right.

hi everyone!! i’m nik and i’m super excited to be here even though this is my first appless rp and i’m not really sure how to go about things?? we will figure this out. i’ve got my solitary boy CLEMENT ZHAO here, currently nineteen years old and a seventh year ravenclaw. he’s wickedly smart but not as good with people as he is with books — but that’s okay! he doesn’t like people anyway or so he says. he is kinda reticent, but pls love him anyway he’s a goodboye, i promise!!

INFO:

is a halfblood; his dad comes from a respectable pureblood family, but his mum is a muggleborn. there’s some tension regarding that between the respective families, but his parents really don’t seem to care. they’ve been married for over twenty years and are still ( disturbingly ) in love

his dad owns and operates a successful broomstick showroom in diagon alley! zhao’s fine brooms is known for selling quality broomsticks both new and used for travel and quidditch purposes. they sponsor a number of teams in the british and irish quidditch league like the appleby arrows, caerphilly catapults, and kenmare kestrels

has an older brother, karl, who graduated from hogwarts three years ago. he’s actually like? annoyingly famous? he was recruited by puddlemere united right out of school and did one season with them before retiring prematurely to follow “other pursuits.” 

karl ended up designing a new broomstick model known as the pegasus xi which is one of the best brooms available right now and widely used by top class quidditch players in the world so. he’s rich, smart, and annoying, viewed as something of a genius inventor ( clem hates him )

also has a part-kneazle named amp who followed him to hogwarts... they have a weird relationship where amp hates clem less than he hates everyone else in the world and clem doesn’t dislike the companionship. so they’re sort of friends but really not. amp follows him around everywhere outside of class but don’t ask to pet him because he is a bitch™ and will scratch you

entered hogwarts in his first year and was promptly sorted into ravenclaw. like, the hat barely touched his head before it was screaming ravenclaw and clem feels like it’s a pretty suitable house for him — is generally better disposed towards fellow ravenclaws, admires slytherins, tolerates hufflepuffs, and detests gryffindors 

befitting of someone in that house, is extremely smart. reads extensively, spends a lot of his time ruminating on theory, spellwork, history of magic, etc. has a pretty strong grasp of magic since he came into it younger than normal, and is particularly skilled at non-verbal magic

somewhat paradoxically, doesn’t spend a lot of time studying like, it’s not hard for him to get good grades so he leaves things till the last minute and then comes out with an O. on the flip side, he really doesn’t care if you copy his homework so people have taken advantage of that in the past 

his main future aspiration is to become a wandmaker. he likes the idea of experimenting with different combinations of woods and cores to push the boundaries of magical power + he figures it’s the sort of job that will mostly be him in his workshop, far removed from the annoyances of the wider world

he’s really a quiet kind of guy, spends a lot of time in the library or outside by the lake. clem keeps to himself because he finds people confusing, messy, loud, and irritating ( not in that order ), but he doesn’t... mind... certain people hanging around him? he’d never admit it out loud but it’s nice to be with group every now and then idk don’t quote him on this!!

is a really skilled flier + quidditch player, though he isn’t part of the team. he’s been flying since he could walk, but he associates the sport with his older brother and since clem is emphatically Not A Fan, he prefers to avoid it altogether. you can sometimes catch him outside on doing cool tricks in the air and stuff though 

loves sweets. you can get him to do basically anything by tempting him with sweets. has a very strong preference for anything that combines chocolate and coffee in particular, but he also loves fresh fruits and french pastries. honeydukes is basically heaven for him

doesn’t like bugs. hates bugs. he’s usually stoic and stone-faced until he sees one. even ladybugs and butterflies are disgusting to him, so just... don’t bring one near him or he will kill you ( and that’s not an exaggeration )

doesn’t like animals in general tbh? aside from amp, he doesn’t care much for even the cutest critters but maybe that’s because he sees very little difference between animals and humans and doesn’t like them either... so go figure

a lot of people think he’s spacey and disengaged from his surroundings but he’s actually pretty astute and observant. he has a good memory and knows a lot about his fellow students, just sees no reason to actually use thank knowledge to, idk, make friends or anything

kinda lame in the sense he will go to bed at 10 pm and skip as many parties as possible because he is tired. he can’t help it, he’s just a major introvert and would prefer to read or play video games over hanging out with large groups 

oh yeah don’t call him clem or clemmie

that’s about it for now!!

CONNECTIONS:

best friends!! he can be a hard person to get to know, but he really does need some friends who just didn’t take no for an answer and wormed their way into his life... preferably have been friends since first or second year

ravenclaw buddies!! he really does like his fellow ravenclaws, so people he’s grown up with, casual acquaintances, study buddies, debate partners, etc. 

bane of his existence!! what it says on the tin. someone who annoys the ever living crap out of him, whether intentionally or accidentally. they are constantly trying clem’s patience and he is tired

fans of his brother!! people who befriend or bother him because of his famous brother ( quidditch star turned wealthy inventor aka one of britain’s most eligible bachelors ) but soon realize that clem hates him. awkward

rivals!! whether one sided on their part or someone clem is purposefully messing with because he’s bored, but he makes their blood boil rip sorry

crushes!! honestly i think it’d be kind of cute if someone has a crush on him because he seems ~*cool and mysterious*~ but he’s just deep sigh

bad influences!! because he is, frankly, boring, some people to push him out of his comfort zone or drag him along on adventures idk i just want my son to experience new things

anything else!! pls love him
