I think it's easy to imagine that Johnny would leave everything behind the second he was able to. But I eat up the idea of him and V being almost trauma bonded.

He can't leave because everything about their relationship is so intimate, more than romance or sex. And the idea that someone knows you so intimately would be scary, for both him and V. Like this line I wrote in one of my cyberpunk dabbles that I think just captures my idea of their relationship perfectly

“Fuck, kid, you’re alright.” V can hear the voice rumble but not in his head. The shock of it hits him like a bucket of icy water. His bleary mind so used to the brink of death that it can't shake the muscle memory.
