‘why do you read “various x reader stories?”’
first, i’m a narcissist and will not read it if it’s not about me
second, I love the feeling of people liking me
third, I was ignored as a child

E poi, e poi? 8 1/2 <&> Mina <&> The Car* (Arctic Monkeys)
*actually more relevant to TBHC- see reblog note
Today I finally watched 8 1/2 [1963 film directed by Federico Fellini].
I LOVED it. If you haven’t seen it, don’t delay! If you happen to be in Australia it’s streaming for free on SBS on demand.
No spoilers (yet) but I had to share this Alex Turner brain rot which hit me hard today for…reasons:
At this crucial, but tiny micro-scene between Guido and Claudette, just before they get out of the car for a chat. Claudette just says “e poi?”, in English this seems to be most often translated as “and then?”
And of course, I was suddenly transported via an incredible human who uploaded a video of Alex singing a snippet of Mina lyrics in Rome in 2023. I almost had to stop the movie! he was singing e poi, e poi, e poi? Right!?!
E poi, e poi? Source is a longer snippet of Mina’s song L'importante è finire. it really got me thinking about Alex’s storytelling through the set of anecdotes, snippets of ideas, and lyrics ( borrowed or his own) planted like little bombs, distributed with precision throughout the album /tour promo cycle…
ok, spoiler warning here, as I wrap up!
so, based on my single viewing today, the central theme was something like:
what do you do when you have tried and failed too many times to be the person you want to be?
The pattern (perceived or otherwise) of repeated failure can lead to losing hope that you will find a way through to the thing you were striving for.
In this case, it’s the perfect woman (or a perfect l film, maybe? Not sure).
it’s ridiculous how precisely relevant this feels l for me specifically, at this point in my life. Which is probably why I loved it so fucking much.
But it’s a classic for a reason, right? I thought the photography was incredible, it’s silly and funny, disturbing in some ways (it was made in the early 60s!) but not nearly as dated as I expected… and it’s not a theme that I’ve seen addressed often in film, at least not as well as this. I think partly cos it’s funny, the actors are all brilliant. Anyway! Enough of that! This isn’t a film review. Well, it’s not really anything.
But, as always, I’m keen for your thoughts if you feel like sharing!

As a HUGE fan of both tlsp and Godard films I’m in nuclear fission
You are waiting for me, but I am not. I come, I enter the room. For you I begin to exist only from this second, although I existed before, thought, perhaps suffered. That is the task: for you to imagine yourself alive, thinking about me. And at the same time imagine me, living the same.
