not submission. I really hate the "My OC, my rules" thing. Cause like, no? Just because they are your oc doesn't mean you can do whatever you want with them. If you want to make your oc suffer and not like them get help, you deserve to lose rights over them. Especially if you only do that stuff to purposely trigger people. Once you do that, your oc no longer belongs to you. they belong to the public who will take better care of them instead

Lets be real tho, this little rant was very good and I'm not gonna delete it just because thats not what the anon was actually tlaking about! So, to anyone who thinks that without Mal, alina would have ended up WITH the darkling (not LIKE him, which is what my anon actually said... again... sorry!!!), this is for you!
..... okay but... how does that translate to her ending up with the man who abused her, manipulated her, groomed her, enslaved her, sexually assaulted her, tried to kill or did kill many of the people she loves, sold a dear friend of hers into sexual slavery, killed her mother figure in front of her and made her look at her dead body (uhhh joffrey parallels much?), and literally only viewed her as a source of power for himself?
Also, the reason she wasn't lonely in the orphanage was because she was friends with Mal. It's made pretty clear that he was basically her only friend growing up. She never mentions any other kids at the orphanage that she was close with, she never remembers any other kids from the orphanage as companions or friends, they repeat over and over that it was always just the two of them against the world.
And lets not forget, the reason she didn't end up being sent to the little palace when she was like 12 or younger was because of Mal. She hid her powers from the Grisha testers so that she could stay with him. If he hadn't been there, they would have discovered her as the sun summoner when she was a little girl, and they would have sent her to the palace. Imagine the Darkling with total and complete control over a 12 year old Alina? He would have had so much more power over her, it would have be so easy for him to manipulate her and groom her into being under his control. He would have enslaved her as a little girl and used her to destroy the world in his image, and he would have succeeded. Mal being there saved not only Alina from being sent into the Darkling's clutches as a pre-teen, but also saved the whole fucking world!!!
Whether or not Mal was around, Alina would have never, ever ended up with the Darkling. He never loved her, he was never romantically attracted to her. He is her ABUSER!!!!!! Everything he ever did and said to get her to believe he was on her side was in furtherance of his abuse of her. He spent every single second they were together lying to her, manipulating her, invading her privacy, stealing from her (her letters AND Mal's letters, and in the show, her journal and her drawings), and grooming her. If Mal wasn't around, it would have just meant there was nobody around who cared enough about Alina to protect her from a 500 year old shadow douche bag who wanted nothing more than to control her power for his own personal gain.
So, no. If there was no Mal, she wouldn't have ended up with the Darkling. She would have ended up as his slave at 12 years old instead of being able to withstand his manipulation and abuse long enough to escape him and fight back. She would have ended up just like Zoya, a tool in his arsenal who has been abused by him to the point where the idea of loosing his favour turned her cruel, who didn't see what kind of a monster he was until he killed her family without a care in the world. Or worse, she could have ended up like Genya, sold and abused for the Darkling's personal gain because he saw her as nothing more than a trinket in his possession to use at his own discretion. Without Mal, the Darkling gets Alina's power, he gets to destroy everything in his path and kill anyone who stands against him. Without Mal, the Darkling wins. Without Mal, Alina ends up as nothing more than a slave.

How are you gonna support womanâs history month and adore the darkling, who SAâd Alina, groomed zoya and basically traded genyaâs innocence for more powerâŚ.

itâs really confusing to me how people say that Malina was pushed a lot in the show adaptation like do yâall not realize itâs their story?? The books revolve around them ofc the tv show is toođ

âWell Mal is worse bc there are real men with his personalityâ While Iâm glad that youâve never encountered them, I do have to inform you there are very much in fact men with the darklings personality.

Iâm just going to say it, stop hating on anti darklina bloggers because they refuse to ship a 17 year old girl with her abuser. Theyâre not in the wrong for not romanticizing the darkling abusive actions....

so let's get this straight: helnik is enemies to lovers, d*rklina is toxic, abusive, based on manipulation and alina is a child when the d*rkling is a hundred years old man.

sigh, i donât give a flying f*ck as to why you like shipping toxic ships like dar/lina, you do you, but donât come into the malina ship to shit on âhow boringâ they are and how they should be âplatonic soulmatesâ and be better this way, just to push your abusive ship down my throat. tag properly.

i don't really see the books the way you see it, like alina spends the whole entire series (book 2 and 3 especially) running away from maly. she talks and talks again about how they're in the past and that she's not that girl anymore and then leigh bardugo must have a problem with character development because she erases that completely with the ending of the series. alina goes from boring to growth to boring again. and i don't even ship darklina btw, i just think would be neat if the series was about alina going dark side and doing hot evil girl shit.
well anon... you picked the wrong girl to send this to because i simply cannot and will not let you say that alina spends the trilogy running away from mal. you mentioned books 2 and 3 specifically so here u go.Â
s&b ends with:Â
âI thought that Iâd given up on Mal. I thought the love Iâd had for him belonged to the past, to the foolish, lonely girl I never wanted to be again. Iâd tried to bury that girl and the love sheâd felt, just as Iâd tried to bury my power. But I wouldnât make that mistake again. Whatever burned between us was just as bright, just as undeniable. The moment our lips met, I knew with pure and piercing certainty that I would have waited for him forever.â
âThey are orphans again, with no true home but each other.âÂ
siege & storm:
I rested my ironbound hands against his chest and closed my eyes. We Were alone on an icy sea, prisoners of a man who could literally make monsters, yet somehow I believed. I leaned into him, and for the first time in days, I let myself hope.âÂ
[Nikolai] dropped his hand. â[Mal] doesnât belong here.â
He belongs with me, I wanted to shout.
âMal isnât weak.âÂ
âHeâs gifted, I grant you, but no Grisha. He can never be your equal.âÂ
âHeâs my equal and more,â I spat.Â
âYou were like a stranger, Alina. Beautiful,â he said. âTerrible.â
âIt wonât happen again. The fetter is a part of me now, like my lungs or my heart.âÂ
âYour heart,â he said flatly.â
I took his hand in mine and pressed it against my chest. âItâs still the same heart, Mal. Itâs still yours.âÂ
ââI never felt like I fit anywhere either,ââ I admitted. Except with Mal. I pushed the thought away.â
âI have loved you all my life, Mal. There is no end to our storyâ
may i now present to you alina & darkles in ruin & rising:Â
âI sought Morozova amplifiers for you Alina, so that we can rule as equals.âÂ
âYou tried to take my power for your own.âÂ
âAfter you ran from me. After you choseââ He stopped, shrugged. âWe would have ruled as equals in time.â Â
and then more from r&r:Â
âWhatever fragile, lovely thing had existed between us belonged to two other peopleâpeople who weren't bound by duty and responsibilityâand I wasn't sure what remained. And still I wanted him to put his arms around me, I wanted to hear him whisper my name in the dark, I wanted to ask him to stay.â
âI caught myself before I could rub my thumb over my scar.
âI dont know.ââ Despite everything that had happened, I wanted to keep Mal near. That wouldnât be fair to either of us.âÂ
ââHeâll do it anyway,â said Mal. âYou said so yourself. Heâll find a reason.â
âI might buy us some timeââÂ
âAt what cost? You were willing to give up your life,â he said quietly. âWhy wonât you let me do the same?â
âBecause I canât bear it.ââ
âI wasnât interested in a fair fight, not if there was a chance I could save Malâs life.âÂ
âI felt as I always had in his armsâcomplete, like I was home.â
the problem with only wanting âhot evil girl shitâ is that you leave no room for nuance. alinaâs story isnât about her becoming evil, with or without the darklingâit wouldnt happen without him. her story is about overcoming the greed for power that consumes men. her story is about surviving the man who enslaved her for her powers and choosing to build a life with the one person who has known her as alina and as the Sun Saintâthe one person who has loved her as both. darkles sparkles tries and very nearly succeeds in taking everything from alina. her story is NOT about her becoming another version of him. alinaâs story is not about her becoming evil and feeling superior because she isnât the darkling. she stands for everything he isnât.Â
having two amplifiers on her body and mal holding her other hand makes her feel power so intensely that itâs painful for her. itâs fucking overwhelming. alina would not have kept her sanity had she killed mal and worn three amplifiers. she would not have been able to survive the extent of her own power. youâre looking for negative character development and there are stories that can give you that, but s&b isnât one of them and for very good reasons. alina doesnât go from âboring to growth to boring again.â she goes from being an orphan to being a saint she never asked to be to living a well deserved peaceful life with the love of her life. that isnât boring; thatâs the soft epilogue leigh set out to write from book one when she started her story with âthe girl and the boy.âÂ
