“well…” bart gestures to himself with a shrug. “guess i’m living proof it is possible. it’s… admittedly not a regular thing, but not the most impossible thing i’ve ever done with my speed.” he’s never really had to think about the physics of his powers on that kind of scale. he wasn’t the the family speedster creating timeline shifts on accident during his daily work commute. maybe he should look into that, if it truly was their speed or if it was linked to the stability of the speedforce. he frowns sharply, a sudden thought occurring to him. “wait, does your speed not come from the speedforce? where did your get your powers?”

“  the speed force  ?  ”  pietro is pretty sure that never came up in any science classes in school  .  “  uh  —  i don’t really know  ?  there’s kind of  —  conflicting information  ...  maybe i’m a mutant  ,  maybe the alien rock gave me superpowers  ?  personally  ,  i’m more inclined to believe the first one  .  ”  he chooses not to mention why  .  it’s not exactly enjoyable to remember what happened to the other people hydra used as test subjects  .  “  tell me more about this bonus force that you guys have  .  ”

          “  YEAH  NO  PROBLEM  .  ”  drops  her  arm  as  their  eyes  settle  briefly  on  the  spilt  drink  .  they  thought  he  was  joking  for  a  minute  before  looking  up  to  realize  that  he  is  very  much  serious  .  “  oh  it’s  basically  just  starbucks’  version  of  a  blended  iced  coffee  .  there’s  also  non-caffeine  options  too  ––  which  like  yeah  it’s  a  little  confusing  .  but  in  short  ,  they’re  blended  coffee  or  creme  based  drinks  .  does  that  make  sense  ?  ”

he can see the confusion in her eyes  —  most people would know something as simple as that  ,  so why is this random guy whose ass she saved asking such a stupid question  —  but he’s glad she doesn’t bring it up  .  pietro doesn’t really feel like getting into the nitty-gritty details of his education or lack thereof on western culture  .  “  i’m guessing it’s the shitty kind of iced coffee  ,  the ones with ice  ?  ”  not to get all back in my day on people  ,  but back in his day  ,  iced coffees were a foot-tall concoction of ice-cream  ,  syrup and whipped cream  —  not milk and ice with a shot of coffee  .  “  but yeah  ,  that makes sense  .  thanks for the explanation  .  ”

“  uh  ...  i’m no physicist  ,  but that sounds impossible  ,  ”  pietro says  .  “  i mean  ,  unless you want the world to collapse around our ears  .  ”  there are many unkind things that could be said about the state of sokovia’s education system when pietro attended school  ,  but he did pick up some things  .  “  fastest man alive  ...  more like walking heat death of the universe  .  ”  he isn’t really sure if that makes sense  ,  but it sounds like it should make sense  .

his instinct is to turn the guy down  —  pretending to be a couple is really not on his bucket list  ,  and he’s not overly fond of bars  .  but twenty thousand dollars is kind of a lot  ,  and ever since coming back from the dead  ,  he hasn’t really had a whole lot to do  .  who knows  ,  he might even make some friends  .  “  okay  ,  but like  —  what kind of games  ?  ‘cause i’m not very up to date on most things  ,  but i’m awesome at pool and snooker  ...  if i do say so myself  .  ”

    face  is  blank  at  the  other’s  words,  slight  shake  of  his  head.  “i  haven’t.”  sounded  pretty  scary  though.  “i’m  not  from  around  here  though  -  that’s  most  likely  why.”  hopefully  there  wouldn’t  be  anymore  questions  about  that.  though  it  wasn’t  like  many  people  knew  his  real  identity  anyway.  “you  got  family  around  here?”

he notices the other’s use of the word sacrifice specifically  ,  glad that his death  ,  whenever and however it happened  ,  wasn’t in vain  .  it was always one of his fears  ,  that he’d just die having achieved nothing in life  .  “  hey man  ,  all good  .  it’s just  —  heavy topic  ,  you know  ?  but i’ve been rolling with the punches for years now  ,  this is hardly any worse  .  ”  and somehow  ,  time and time again  ,  pietro gets back up  —  even when it does nothing at all to help him  .  “  what kind of powers do you have  ?  ”  he adds  ,  curious  .

        “  it’s  …  it’s  a  long  story  ,   to  say  the  least  .  ”    one  that  she  would  tell  him  eventually  ;   how  else  was  she  to  explain  the  twin  sons  and  husband  that  she  has  in  her  phones ?   “  i’ll  tell  you  some  other  time  .   just  -  ”   and  there’s  no  denying  the  blind  smile  of  pure  joy  on  wanda’s  face  ,   now  that  she  can  see  him  ,   touch  him  -  and  the  woman  pulls  her  twin  brother  in  for  a  hug  ,   holding  him  tight  ,   almost  as  if  she  thought  he’d  disappear  if  she  let  go  .     “  give  me  a  few  minutes  like  this  .   just  to  make  sure  you’re  real  and  that  i  haven’t  totally  lost  it  .   i  don’t  need  more  guns  pointed  at  me  .  ”  

pietro accepts her hug  ,  sure he’s smiling like an idiot  .  it’s not been that long  ,  to him  ,  but  —  it’s not just being reunited with her  ,  it’s knowing she’s okay  ...  knowing she’s not dead  .  and then he hears the next thing she says  ,  and he’s right back to being alarmed and concerned and five seconds from hunting down everyone who’s ever hurt his little sister  .  because  ,  uh  ,  who’s been pointing guns  —  plural  !!  —  at wanda  ??  but he keeps that to himself  ,  not wanting to ruin the moment  .  he’ll find someone to ask about it later  .  “  definitely real  .  i don’t think any mind could dream up everything that’s happened to me in the last week  .  ”

“  apparently  !  ”  he says  ,  voice tinged with exhaustion  .  it’s been a long week so far  ,  and it’s not looking like calming down any time soon  .  “  even though last i knew  ,  we’d supposedly gotten our powers from some fancy alien rock  .  now there’s people calling her a witch  ,  me a mutant  ...  it was all so much simpler back in the day  .  ”  the day being 2015  ,  when the biggest distinctions were  :  alien  ,  enhanced  &  regular human  .  “  i don’t think she has the answers  —  she’d tell me if she did  ,  ”  pietro says  .  “  unfortunately  ,  all the people who could have had the answers are dead and gone  .  ”
