Assassin’s Creed fail reveals how sexist animation standards are failing real women,
This is the same gorgeously animated, acclaimed franchise that devotes an entire subset of game play to tree-climbing. Swinging from limb to limb high above the incredibly detailed world? High on the priority list of Assassin’s Creed features. Putting a single woman into an active role in the game? Nah.
Earlier this year, the lead animator of Frozen protested that Disney's 3-D animation software literally didn’t possess the ability to make women’s faces look distinguishable from one another.
This is the same studio that employed a visual effects team of over 40 people in order to design the unique properties of snowflakes. Literally, the women of Tangled and Frozen were less distinguishable to Disney animation software than a pile of snow.
The tangle of issues and layers of sexism that contribute to this situation is overwhelming, but at the core is the fundamentally flawed way women are portrayed in comics, animation, and gaming: a feedback loop of sexual objectification and industry complacence.
When you perpetuate the idea, across various art-based mediums, that women in drawn art, comics, and animation must and should look and move with flowy, exaggerated gestures, graceful movements, and hips, chest, and ass thrust forward in order to pander to the male gaze at all times, then you make it easier, later on, to use your own sexist animation and art standards as an excuse for why you don’t have more women.

We take you on a visual walk-through of the gaming industry and animation culture’s resistance to making women look, act, and move like human beings.

A tweet from Natalie Hall got me thinking about whale mermaids (whalemaids?). Just… the sheer scale of them.
There’s some big… huge… gargantuan stuff in the ocean.

Dog and Butterfly | Wayne Unten
Inspired by a visit to the Tyrus Wong exhibit at the Walt Disney Family Museum in August 2013, this is an animation experiment using digital brushes to achieve a watercolor look.

Star Thrower is based off of this story, which was in turn based loosely off of this story.
You may have heard a version at church or at a motivational speech or in an email from a concerned parent.  I always thought the title sounded sci-fi, and naturally my thoughts drifted into space and to other planets.
Eventually, I landed here, on the moon, with a couple of giant aliens and a host of stranded astronauts.  The absurdity of it all made me laugh, so I had to comicatize it.
Collected in my anthology The Antler Boy and Other Stories.

Ecuador issues permit to drill in pristine Amazon reserve May 26, 2014
Ecuador’s government has issued an environmental permit for oil drilling in the pristine Amazon reserve that President Rafael Correa initially offered to exempt from exploration if rich countries would pay his government.
Correa abandoned that effort last year due to insufficient interest and has spurned pleas by environmentalists to spare the Yasuni reserve.
Earlier this month, Ecuador’s electoral council declared invalid a petition drive seeking to prevent drilling in the 6,500-square-mile Amazon reserve.
Environment Minister Lorena Tapia said on state television that with Thursday’s signing of the permit camps and access roads can now be built. Production could begin as early as 2016.
Two indigenous groups living in voluntary isolation inhabit Yasuni, which the U.N. in 1989 declared a biosphere reserve.

Apparently some vegans are telling people not to eat honey to support bees. STOP. STOP NOW. DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW BEES WORK? Buy honey (local if possible) -> support beekeepers -> support bees. I swear people don’t even think this stuff out.  Beekeepers provide bees with an environment in which they can live, and are encouraged to thrive. Bees then have a big huge giant person who can deal with any threats to the hive.  Yes, honey is a winter food supply for bees, but beekeepers (unless they’re dicks, in which case they’d be shooting themselves in the foot) will NEVER take too much honey from a hive, and will always ensure that bees have enough food. Think about it, you’re not going to starve a source of income/hobby, are you? So now. Support beekeepers. Support bees. buzz.

when you’re at the zoo with a sketchbook you’re pissed every time the animals so much as roll over in their sleep
