I told Miyazaki I love the “gratuitous motion” in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes people will just sit for a moment, or they will sigh, or look in a running stream, or do something extra, not to advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are.
“We have a word for that in Japanese,” he said. “It’s called ma. Emptiness. It’s there intentionally.”
Is that like the “pillow words” that separate phrases in Japanese poetry?
“I don’t think it’s like the pillow word.” He clapped his hands three or four times. “The time in between my clapping is ma. If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it’s just busyness, But if you take a moment, then the tension building in the film can grow into a wider dimension. If you just have constant tension at 80 degrees all the time you just get numb.”
Which helps explain why Miyazaki’s films are more absorbing and involving than the frantic cheerful action in a lot of American animation. I asked him to explain that a little more.
“The people who make the movies are scared of silence, so they want to paper and plaster it over,” he said. “They’re worried that the audience will get bored. They might go up and get some popcorn.
But just because it’s 80 percent intense all the time doesn’t mean the kids are going to bless you with their concentration. What really matters is the underlying emotions–that you never let go of those.
— Roger Ebert in conversation with Hayao Miyazaki

“Cleo embarks on a journey—by foot, in the city streets—during the course of which she takes on [the identity of a flâneuse]. [From The Guardian: A flâneuse is the female version of the flâneur, ‘a figure of privilege and leisure, with the time and money to amble around the city at will. … (But) rather than wandering aimlessly, … the female flâneur has an element of transgression: she goes where she’s not supposed to.’] Cleo has all of Paris before her, and … she belongs to Paris. Whereas earlier [in the film] she was self-absorbed and unaware, now, as she looks, muses, and responds to the city, she becomes both an observer of the crowd and a part of it.” (Janice Mouton, From Feminine Masquerade to Flâneuse)

Stills from Taipei Story 青梅竹馬 (1985) and Yi Yi 一一 (2000)
It was also hard to find an actor for the role of Sherry, a Taiwanese woman in her forties who has lived in the States for twenty years. Very few working actresses fit the profile of such a character. Two months into the casting process, I got lucky when I found that the very first actress I ever worked with was living in Canada. Twenty years ago, when I was a director for the first time (it was a made-for-TV movie***), I spotted Suyun Ke standing in line to enroll for the acting classes organized by the TV station. I told my producer that she seemed right for the role, so we invited her to test for us—and it worked out rather well. When I learned that she was living in Canada, I flew her back to Taiwan for a meeting—and our casting problem was solved.
Edward Yang, from the original press notes for the 2000 U.S. release of Yi Yi
***This movie was Duckweed 浮萍, which was part of a TV series produced by Sylvia Chang in 1981 called Eleven Women 十一個女人
