Dealing with a nonverbal pet or little

These are my tips on dealing with nonverbal pets and littles. I know both are fluent on who does what, so I tried to use what seems to be more common. This is mostly for understanding emotions or needs.

Pay attention to body language.

Littles: negative or positive stimming, angry stomping, being aggressive with drawing or playing, curling into a ball due to emotional distress or for coziness when tired, cuddling up to caregiver, friends, or stuffed animals for affection or comfort, and if they are keeping to themselves or seeking out attention.

Pets: hiding in safe places when feeling unsecure or scared, being too rough with toys or caregiver due to irritation or distress, and pawing when wanting attention.

Pay attention to what sounds they can make.

Littles: Happy babbling, sad or happy whining (sad whining usually follows distress like crying), sad whimpering due to sadness/fear/any sort of distress, laughing, and incoherent mumbling can mean boredom/spacing out/confusion/etc.

Pets: Making any strained animal sound that they are because of distress, hissing either for playfulness or anger, happy purring, and whimpering due to sadness/fear/or any sort of distress.

Games or activies

Littles: Playing pretend! Littles love games and playing with their caregivers. Maybe try to pretend to play as animals or teacher and student. Maybe use cards to communicate. Another good way is watching shows or cartoons. Might not require much speaking, and it's a good way to spend one another's company.

Pets: Try and play a game your pet likes playing! Games with pets don't always require speaking. Try a toy on a string for your kitty or fetch with your puppy. Another thing I would recommend is building a nest/bed. Just like littles, pets love comfy things but in their own way. Maybe make a pillow or blanket fort to mimic a pet house or use a ton of blankets and pillows to mimic a pet bed.
