5 Reasons You Should Register for Next-Semester Classes ASAP
Tumblr media
It’s December and you’ve probably been told at least 10 times now by the university to register for classes. Via email, signs on the walls, texting maybe, phone calls, phone messages, and more ignored emails.
Tumblr media
We get that you may be sick of it, but hear us out. We have a student’s best interest at heart when we tell them to get registered for classes. To be honest, we don’t like harassing you any more than you like being harassed.
We don’t run down our mental checklist of things to do in the office and think, “Oh yay! I get to call students and leave voicemails about signing up for the next semester’s classes!” We know you don’t like getting those calls usually, and we really try not to be obnoxious.*
*If you’re planning on taking a break, or even just want to stop receiving phone calls, the best thing you can do is call the university back.
You don’t have to give a lot of details, just explain you’re taking a semester off or are waiting to register for classes and politely mention it’s not necessary to call you again.
There are legitimate reasons why you should NOT put off registering for your next semester classes.
But hey, you might be thinking...
Tumblr media
So let us try to convince you...
1.) You have a better chance of getting the classes you want.
This is an age old argument but it rings true. The classes seniors need to graduate and the popular classes fill up quickly!
There are a lot of students who need an English writing class and if you aren’t quick, you might have to wait another semester to take it.
We’re not saying you have to be that person who stays up until midnight waiting for registration to open (though it’s okay if you are that person), but don’t wait until finals week to set your schedule for the next semester.
2.) Setting your schedule will give you one less thing to stress about.
You’re a college student, you’re probably busy enough. If you’re a college student working full time, a parent, or commuting then you’re insanely busy.
You don’t need extra stress in your life.
3.) Save money by book shopping earlier.
If you wait until the last minute to register for a class, you may also have to pay the last minute price for a book you need.
3.) Universities will cancel classes if the numbers look low.
It’s like when you see something at the store for a deal that you really want, but you leave it thinking you can come back for it later and then it’s gone and you’re #sadpanda.
This is kind of a secret, but we’re going to give it to you straight... Universities can’t always afford to pay professors to teach to a class of 5 people.
If you see a class you want to take, register for it. Help keep the class alive.
4.) End the madness.
If you’re tired of getting notifications about registering for classes, the best way to make them stop is to register.

Your First Bad Grade in College
Tumblr media
We asked students: “What did you do to improve after your first bad grade in college?”
Disclaimer: Opinions expressed on this site may not represent the official views of Purdue Fort Wayne and student submissions may not represent the official view of the General Studies program.
1.) Allocate your study time. Spend more time getting work done/studying for your harder classes.
Technically point number one was not the exact words a student submitted. Truthfully, a student’s advice was: “Sometimes you have to skip an easy class to get more work/study time done for your other class.” But as an academic program, we can’t tell students, “Skip class.”
Tumblr media
There is wisdom to the point the student is trying to make...
Analyze your workload and your classes...
Which classes do you feel you are strong in?
Which classes do you not feel so confident about?
Allocate more study time to your weaker class
Review your stronger subject
What if I don’t feel good about any of my classes?
Read on and see if what we say next helps...
2.) “I learned no matter what you can’t give up. Actually I also learned that sometimes we fall down and we just have to pick ourselves back up.
I changed how I studied the material in class and that helped a lot.”
Some things to stress from this message: College is tough, but don’t give up. This might be your first tough class, but it won’t be your last. There will be more. Building grit will not only help you do well in college, but for the rest of your life.
Ask yourself what you could do to improve. Sometimes things are outside of your control, and sometimes they aren’t...
Outside of your control:
A parent dying before a semester begins, or during isn’t within your control and it’s natural that grief could affect your academics.
Possibly something you can control:
Working 50 hours a week between two part time jobs?
Can you ask to work less hours?
Drop down to one part time job?
Adjust your work schedule?
Consider a different job that works with your school schedule better?
3.) “Panic, pray**, drink Amp***, go to tutoring.”
Tumblr media
**The General Studies does not give preference towards any certain type of religious affinity.
***This is not an ad for Amp.
You may feel really bad the first time you get a bad grade. Let yourself feel your emotions. Feeling is a vital part of processing, the negative feelings you have can be motivators to do better.
This person chooses to pray to help them feel reflect, and find confidence that they will do better in the future. Meditating could be another option for someone who doesn’t identify strongly with a religion.
Tutoring. Sometimes you need outside help and that is okay!
Tutoring is free on campus here. See our next post for more info about tutoring. Consider it.

7 Ways to Use a 15 Minute Study Break
If you’re on the fence about if study breaks are important or not, check out our last article: “Why you might want to start building study breaks into your schedule.”
It’s time for our second article in Wise Words: “7 Ways to Use a 15 Minute Study Break.”
We left a box outside of our door and posted an online survey asking students about how they use 10-15 minutes study breaks to help them, here’s what we got...
“I think the best way to unwind is to chat with a friend and have a snack.”
Both are great ways to switch gears for a short while. Recharge your batteries emotionally by talking to a friend, and keep yourself fueled physically with food. Just try to avoid sugary stuff that will later lead to a sugar crash.
“Scroll through social media to catch up on what your friends are up to.”
Take your mind off yourself and what you’re doing by taking a second to get up to date on what your friends and family are doing. This way, when you finally manage to unearth yourself from the giant pile of college work you have, you won’t feel out of touch.
Tumblr media
“Spend time on a break focusing on something you are passionate about.”
Don’t let yourself slip into a slump (say that 10 times fast). Use a break to perk you mood up doing something you like to do. Do a 10 minute work out from Youtube. Draw. Eat (we really like to eat in General Studies). Watch a segment from a show you really like.
“Caffeinated yourself.”
Some people feel really productive if they have some coffee to help them along. It is pumpkin spice season right now...
Tumblr media
“Organize your week.”
It can be easy to get so caught up in the here and now that sometimes taking a few minutes to step back can feel soooo refreshing!
Plan out what you have to do tomorrow, think about how you want to reward yourself for completing a test/finishing a project, figure out what else you need to get done. When you’re done, you might walk away feeling a lot more prepared and confident.
“Find a reason to laugh. Watch Pet Collective videos.”
If you like animals, you’ll love Pet Collective. Lizards, dogs, cats, rabbits, horses, birds, there’s something for just about everyone.
“Give yourself confidence. Tell yourself: ‘I will pass!’”
Confidence is key. Meditate, journal, but don’t let yourself think: “Why am I doing this? I’m going to fail no matter what.”
Tumblr media
Just remember, you can do this and it’ll all be worth it when you reach the finish line!
