closed starter for jackson (@pvtaspcllonyou) located at critical hit arcade
It wasn't unusual for Koda to drag her friends on adventures with her, especially when it came to those who didn't always get out as much as they should. She'd identified today's victim as Jackson and brought him along with her on what she called an important errand. The arcade called her name, so with a jar of coins and the desire to play air hockey, they'd ended up in front of the token machine. "Come on, I had a critical hankering," she cooed, giving her friend an eyebrow waggle. While this might not have been the 'important errand' he expected, Koda thought it was a lot more fun than anything he would've imagined. "What you should be worried about is me absolutely destroying you in air hockey." Over the years, she frequented arcades and comic book stores, every place she lived having become a regular in those establishments, and Cardinal Hill was no different. When it came to air hockey, it might not have been her best game, but Koda would argue one of the most entertaining. "Loser buys the winner a drink."

Koda nodded in agreeance but paused to look back at her co-worker after hearing her sentiment. "Yeah but isn't half the fun making a sweet costume?" It was for her at least. That might've been her favorite part, besides having an excuse to scare people without consequences. Her love for the holiday began when she was young, after visiting a local haunted house and feeling the adrenaline rush of wondering who would pop out next. That was a feeling she had sought out, having only really found it when trouble came her way, but thinking of her Halloween attire gave her something to look forward to. "I've got to start working on them now," she said flashing her best attempt at the Annie Wilkes face. "I'm your biggest fan, Paul," Koda mimicked a line from the movie before laughter tainted any attempt at an impression. "How many Hannibal Lecters do you think we'll see running around this year?" The movie's popularity made her assume it'd be a best-seller among teens or young adults.
Vivian looked Koda over when she asked if she could pull off an Annie Wilkes costume for Halloween. "Probably." She said. "Though it doesn't really matter. Halloween is just about having fun, right?" It was a holiday that Vivian had always enjoyed - an excuse to dress up and use your imagination. As she got more into horror movies, it was an excuse to dress up as iconic characters from the films she loved. "I do want to see your crazy eyes, though." She said, letting out a small laugh.

"It'd be pretty sexy, huh?" Her eyebrows did a waggle for him, smirk pinching the edge of her lips. Not everyone got the pleasure of seeing her the way Xander did but he'd been kind enough to return the favor. Koda enjoyed the view, only hoping his current mental image was as good as hers. "Might have to get myself one of that hats before I come over next." A suggestion that would most likely never come to fruition but that wouldn't stop her from entertaining the idea. She didn't mind the idea of seeing him in the Indiana Jones attire either though neither would most likely end up in costume.
His flight took place in her imagination, closing her eyes to let a breeze help embrace the fantasy. That sounded like a good place to go for a birds eye view. Xander's image made her own form or some sibilance of a dream she didn't know she had until then. The place she grew up in Ireland reflected in her mind, wandering what the feathered creatures that flew above it ever knew the impact it had on one girls childhood. "You should do that one day, flight or not," she said finally. That was something possible or at least Koda thought so, not wanting him to give up on the idea if they didn't miraculously take flight one day. "Everyone should see New York once in their lifetime, there's nowhere like it." In all honesty she could say that about many of the places she visited over the years but something special came from that city. New York functioned differently than anywhere else and he should get to see it with his own eyes.
Koda's eyes flickered down to the dirt patch below them before making her decision. She trusted him, sure, but had to get her own lay of the land beforehand. "Alright, if you say so," the blonde agreed as she started to get into position. Once he was sturdy, Koda's arms went around his neck and legs to his waist, making sure to not squish the precious cargo in her sweatshirt. "Now what?" The called from his back with her gaze drifting back down to the ground.
"Sorry, were you saying something? I got kind of distracted thinking of you in that hat and button up. Is it hot up here? I think it's hot," he said with a laugh, making a motion as if he was fanning himself off. Honestly he hadn't expected what was transpiring between the two of them. It felt so silly to be shy around someone who had already seen him naked but here he was. It felt like in a way, Koda had accessed a part of him that he hadn't quite let anyone into in Cardinal Hill and that made him feel vulnerable.
"I'm sure you would have," he told her with complete sincerity. He could understand already that Koda had no problem getting by on her own. But it didn't mean he still couldn't be there. "Oh I know exactly where I'd fly to. I've always wanted to go to New York. I'd give anything to see the Knicks play at the Garden," he admitted. He kind of felt that New York City would probably overwhelm him but that didn't make him want to go any less. "Maybe. I hope we do someday," he admitted. Maybe being this high up was just making him more sentimental.
"Alright, I'll set my watch then." He looked down again, retracing his steps with his eyes as he thought of all the best places to place his feet. "Okay, best option, you gotta wrap your arms around me like a Koala. I'll hold you, promise, just," he shifted so he could stand fully in front of her. "Wrap your arms and legs around me and I'll get us down, okay? Promise."

As a kid, one of the only things that Koda read for her own enjoyment was comic books. Most of what she had to go through were recommendations from her father but in the graphic pages of the various superheroes she found inspiration. There was a time when she wanted to be a superhero when she grew up, somehow having been trained to be the very opposite. More often than not she felt like the villain of a story that was still unwritten but did everything possible to make sure that didn't become the case.
Today Koda hadn't come in looking for anything in particular. Actually, she wanted something different, feeling like she'd hit a wall with her latest issues of Heartbreakers and was waiting for the next one from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Each aisle was lined with something new, taking her time to flip through a few, trying to decide what might be coming home with her. Without work that day she planned to spend it with a joint and a new read.
An employee broke her focus on the rack, turning it to him where a toothy smile formed. "I'm not really sure what I'm looking for," she explained, not that much was given. "You need like... other people for D&D, right? Or at least to do the fun shit." An assumption that Koda had gotten word of over the years but this being her first chance to ask it's truth. "What do you recommend? What's your favorite thing to read around here?" If something came with the seal of employee approval she figured it deserved to be considered. He might've been a stranger yet didn't have any reason not to trust his judgement, he worked here after all, and she'd want the same from anyone at the video store.
Open starter @cardinalstart (cap of 3) Location: Theater of the Mind
Davis loved his job. Like...he really loved it. Since he was 15, it was the place he went to that always felt safe. It wasn't that he had a bad home life or anything. Sure, his parents were...well they were basically parents in name only. But Davis loved his grandparents and his extended family here in Cardinal Hill, and they - the grandparents especially - had always worked to make up for what his parents had never given him. Despite all of that, Davis had always felt the pressure of the outside world, the need to be perfect at everything, to be, well, enough. It was exhausting. But here in Theater of the Mind, he could just be Davis King, comic book fan, D&D nerd, lover of board games and graphic novels and puzzles and the like. Here he didn't feel the need to be perfect, or at least not quite so acutely.
So even on his days off, Davis often found himself there, though today he was on the clock. It was a little slow that day (truthfully the shop was rarely super busy, but they did steady business), so walked into one of the aisles with a box from the back, setting it down with a grunt. Good thing you work out so much, Davis thought - the box was full of the latest Dungeons & Dragons guidebooks, and it was heavy as hell. Opening the book, Davis began putting them on a nearly empty shelf, and he was thinking about how popular the game seemed to be in Cardinal Hill when he saw someone a bit down the aisle. "If you're looking for D&D books, this is the place for you," he said brightly, grinning at the customer. "Or are you looking for something else?"

Koda let out a hearty laugh before adding a nod of agreement. Jaws got old too fast and she didn't get much out of rewatching it anymore. It only took one time to understand the story was about a shark with a vendetta against humans or at least that's how she saw it. "Noted." That one would be shelved for a while and hopefully, it got rented out which took the film out of their personal rotation. "Say fucking less," Koda chimed in at the mention of Misery which just so happened to be one of her favorites. A little horror did the body good or she thought so, finding them to be a whole lot more interesting than some of the things that were made. Even though it'd only been out a year she'd seen it at least five times and that still wasn't enough. "Think I could pull off an Annie Wilkes Halloween costume?" She asked, popping the VHS out of its case and into the player provided by the shop. "Don't know if I've got crazy eyes down yet though."
"Oh god, no. Not Jaws again." Vivian agreed. It may be an unpopular opinion, but she wasn't too fond of that film. She found it a bit boring, and wasn't really compelled by the mystery element of it. Her mind did go over the other three movies Koda listed, however. "Misery, maybe?" She finally decided. As much as she loved Goodfellas, she had watched it fairly recently. And she didn't think she had the brain capacity to watch a documentary at the moment. Not this early in the morning, at least. Besides, she was a sucker for a good horror.

closed starter for miriam (@ritualove) located at the boxing gym
Her knuckles were bruised after the session, having forgotten the feeling of beating her fists into a bag for the better half of the last few hours. It was a pain she'd missed in some strange way. While boxing used to be something she loved, her father's true intentions took away from the love and turned it into a form of manipulation. Koda had been working on that since returning to Cardinal Hill. Her parents took away enough from her that she wanted to reclaim what was once her favorite after-school activity. Koda had been getting her fill of fights from the sidelines and indulging in her interest that way which was how she became familiar with Miriam. Her face, sure, but it was the voice that caught her off guard, drawing an interest that she couldn't ignore. "Miriam, right? I've seen you fight," the blonde started, striking up a conversation with the stranger when she saw her finishing up on the mat. If the situation presented itself, Koda didn't want to miss the chance, unsure when she'd run into her again. "I gotta ask... Where are you from? Are you a fuckin' Paddy?"

He wasn’t wrong but Koda couldn’t let him have it that easily. Their situationship made it clear that there was a physical attraction, she couldn’t give up her bit without more of a fight. “I don’t know, I kind of think it would look good with my skin tone, especially if I got one of those button-downs.” The outfit was already forming in her head, knowing it would never come to fruition. Halloween might’ve been her best bet but even then, Koda usually had another whole new crazy idea by then. It was her favorite holiday, always had been, and she took it very seriously. Maybe it was to opportunity to be someone she wasn’t or that the occasion provided a day when everyone felt that they could be their true self. “You would look pretty fit,” she eventually conceded with a waggle of her brow. For being as attractive as he was Koda thought Xander to be on the shy side or at least humble enough to not realize the obvious.
The kitten had been her priority, never considering her own stake in the game. That was how Koda functioned. Things were rarely planned out to the extent they should have been, but one way or another, the job got done. "I would've figured it out," the blonde replied with a shrug. To her, it hadn't been a problem but to anyone else, it was an apparent situation she'd gotten herself into. A smile formed at the story he revealed and similar memories came flooding back. There was a time when she was happy before her childhood was tainted by the truth. "No way. I used to want to fly too, didn't know where, but I would've done anything for that view," she reminisced with a click of her tongue. Times had changed. "Maybe one day we'll sprout wings." A delusion she indulged in for the moment, giving him a gentle nudge with her knee and a smile growing to fill her cheeks. Then Koda returned to reality where they couldn't stay in the tree to overlook the town for the rest of the day. "Only for the next ten minutes though," the girl teased before giving a nod of approval. "So I guess that means we're in." Even if the kitten had no say in the matter, she decided they were of one mind with more involvement than only napping in her jacket pocket.
"Maybe but then if you're Indiana Jones then what does that make me? Kind of think I can pull off the brown hat better than you can," he teased, not entirely sure that was even true. "I'm always working out," he told her, though he was clearly blushing under her gaze. Even though his athletic days were behind him, fitness and conditioning had always remained important to him. Not only because of his job but because of life in general. He wanted to be able to survive whatever life was going to throw at him and being in strong shape was a big part of that. He wasn't usually vain about it but when people were checking him out, he had to admit he did puff out his chest just a little more. He followed her gaze towards the kitten, having to admit that it did melt his heart a bit.
"I mean I get it. But you save the kitten, who saves you? Without you breaking a bone," he added since jumping down and seeing what happened was definitely not the best option. He looked at the cat again then out at the view, a smile forcing its way onto his face. "I tried to help my Dad build a tree house for us once. It was kind of a disaster but for a very brief moment I got to sit way up high and look out at the city. You could even see the water in the distance. Made me wish I could fly," he admitted, a rare moment of vulnerability and honesty but he felt okay about it when they were this high up. "If you trust me for the next ten minutes, I promise I can get all three of us down safely. I'll even go with you to get this little one some proper care over at the vets. Laz always knows what he's doing. What do you say?"

Work was slow, as a weekday morning usually was. No one seemed to need to rent a video or return one until lunchtime at the earliest. Why they even opened before noon was against Koda but she showed up for her shift as long as they paid her. At least she wasn't alone, having someone to endure the lag made it go by faster. One of the best ways to pass the time was watching movies since they were required to put one on anyway for customers as they browsed. "Okay, are we feeling more Paris is Burning, Misery, or Goodfellas?" Koda asked while flipping through a stack of movies. "We also have Jaws again but I feel like we just watched that one." It was something to do to pass the time and it was better than working according to her. This had been how she watched most things except for the ones she smuggled home for a night.

"Could you get a big K on it too? I think that would be pretty siiick," she asked with a waggle of her eyebrows as if to entice him with her suggestion. "Olive green sounds perfect." That might've been her favorite color but sky blue was at a close second. Koda wondered if she'd told him that or if he just so happened to say it. Either way, her contentment was sealed with a nod. "I like it black usually unless I'm feeling wild," the blonde laughed, a change in coffee order being one of the more minute things she did. The sound only continued as he explained the day he'd had, not laughing at him but at the reality of the unpleasant situation. In these moments Koda was glad the worst she had to do was rewind everyone's tapes because almost no one bothered to. "I don't know how you do it. Maybe you should apply to come to work with me at the video store." A suggestion she didn't intend on him taking but gave for his consideration. The silence that a hot cup of coffee brought was unmatched. She hummed softly, breathing in one of her favorite scents. "I get you," Koda replied with her eyes on the horizon. "That's why it's so nice out here." They both understood that about the forest which was part of how they connected in the first place. "You know, it's grown on me. I've lived a lot of places but there's something about this weird little town."
"Should I get you a cape then? Not a red one, that's too flashy. Maybe green to blend in. A nice olive," he told her, making a funny voice as he said it. He laughed before realizing how much of his personality he was showing and turned away for a moment as if watching a bird fly by. "Good, I've got some sugar in my bag too if you don't want to drink it black. I always change my mind halfway through," he admitted, taking his bag off and taking a seat so he could pour out a cup for them both. "You work today? I had to clean up a bunch of stuff I don't even want to talk about today. I hate when the kids come for tours. It's like they eat a bunch of shit beforehand just so they can be sick right where I just mopped." Shawn shook his head, almost laughing as he heard himself. Concerned with things at a stable job? Maybe he was growing more than he thought. "Anyway," he handed her the cup and pulled out the sugar before reaching for his own. He was quiet as he took his first sip, closing his eyes for a moment as he let it warm him up. "I think I'm starting to get a hang of this place. I mean here, where the trees are at least. Rest of the town I don't know, kind of feels like..." he couldn't really think of a good word to use so instead he shrugged. "Do you like living here?"

Koda had been smiling before he got there, but it only grew more proud as he spoke. This wouldn't be the last time he found her in a sticky situation, she had a knack for getting herself in trouble, even if it was for a good cause. The girl would do just about anything for anyone in need, including those of the furry variety. In fact, those might be her most satisfied customers. "Not a bad idea. I could go the whole Indiana Jones route, get a whip and a holster. Might be pretty sick." Now that she thought about it, Koda wondered if that was something she could pick up, knowing it could be put to good use. The blonde's eyes watched him climb, admiring the way his muscles looked as he made his it up with ease. "You been working out? That was crazy," she commented with a hint of sarcasm amidst the truth. Her gaze flickered down to the furball in her jacket and her smile lit back up. "How could I not climb up here? Look at him." Koda's bottom lip pushed out into a pout as she gawked at the sleeping kitten, looking up to see if Xander caught a glimpse too. The horizon was the second-best view after that. "My dad used to tell me to figure it out when I got stuck which usually just involved jumping and hoping for the best," she said simply. A glimpse into her past like this was rare but she made sure to keep it general enough to not give a clear view.
"You know, I think we're going to have to launch an entire tree climbing team. Either that or I'm gonna need to start making sure you travel with rope." Xander had seen her as soon as she had seen the cat. He had been taking a break from the firehouse, trying some stress relieving tactics Nell had taught him. Instead of eating the the firehouse, he would get lunch nearby, maybe even a coffee and take a walk through the park before returning. He figured if he stayed close enough, he could still run back to join the team for an emergency. His Chief hadn't caught on yet at least so he was enjoying it while he could. It wasn't the first time Xander had found Koda stuck in a tree and he was starting to realize it probably wasn't going to be the last. "It was a cat, wasn't it?" Xander looked the tree over for a second longer before climbing his way up with ease, taking the exact route he hoped to help Koda down. He let out a soft laugh when he made it up to her and leaned against the tree. "Yeah I'm pretty sure I can see my apartment from here too." He had to admit the view was nice but he was too focused on getting her down safely to enjoy it. "Where the hell did you learn to climb trees so well? And why did no one teach you how to get down?"

It only took a look and she knew he remembered everything. Koda hoped he'd gotten sudden amnesia so she could be just another customer he saw that day. If anything in life had been that simple she wouldn't have ended up at Cardinal Hill in the first place. "Pain? I don't think so. Eating? The fucker won't stop eating," she admitted with a layer of panic amidst her joking. This wasn't a laughing matter but Koda didn't handle much without a line or two hiding the gravity of a situation. That made things easier. He didn't give her anything more than the necessary information and she was glad to take only that.
Overnight seemed like forever, not to mention more than she could afford most likely. "How much would something like that cost? Like totally do whatever you need to, just to get an idea how much debt my idiot is gonna put me in." He was worth every penny, that cat had saved her life a time or two, and they were her family now. When life felt empty it was her cats that filled the void. Their safety meant more than her own if she had to choose. "Thanks, Enzo." A name she hadn't forgotten in their time apart but it tasted like blood leaving her lips. It was her father's she feared stained her unknowing hands. If things could've been different it could've been his father who cared for her beloved Lou and not the son he left behind.
It was a normal day for Enzo—business as usual. He was juggling his studies while doing his best to stay useful around the clinic. Unsurprisingly, his coursework was falling behind. But what could he do? The animals needed him. He had a gift with them—soothing, steady, healing. One patient came after another, and he hadn’t eaten a single thing all day.
He kept glancing at the clock, counting the minutes until he could sign out and grab a decent sandwich on the way home. But of course, someone had to walk in at the last minute. He heard the door creak open and sighed heavily, biting his lip. “Last one,” he muttered under his breath. Just one more. Then he’d be free. Maybe even reward himself with a Red Bull and a greasy bucket of fries.
“Hi, how can I he—oh. Hi.” Enzo froze for a beat before slipping back into his usual poker face. He was fully alert now. It was her—Koda. The Koda. He avoided her gaze, focusing instead on the cat she set on the counter. No vet was on duty now—only him. “Any signs of pain? Still eating?” he asked, voice flat, fingers moving automatically over the animal with practiced care.
“I think she might need to stay with us for monitoring,” he said, finally glancing up at her. His expression remained unreadable, but what more could be expected? After all, she’d vanished without a word. Now, to him, she was just a stranger again—one who still, somehow, held a few stubborn strings to his heart.

They were friends or something like that. Koda wasn't too sure if anyone she met would stick around if they knew the truth about her, enjoying the company while they were blissfully ignorant. Shawn had stumbled onto her a time or two and it was impossible to keep her nose out of anyone's business that now it became a regular thing. It was unusual for her to miss a day, even if it was just for a walk after work, she enjoyed the safety her trees brought. Of course, now she had to share them but he seemed to care for them in the same way Koda did. "Okay, showoff," she half-teased giving her face a scrunch of mockery. It was only short-lived as a smile crested her lips moments later as she stepped further into the foliage they shared. "Maybe next time I will, you never know. I have to keep you on your toes." That hadn't been a bad idea, in fact, it would be tucked away for later when he least expected it. Her wandering eyes lingered on the object in his hands until his voice broke through with an offer. "I'm never going to say no to that." The blonde's blistered hands were already outstretched in preparation and a satisfied smile had now settled place.

"I told you that I'd beat you here today." The first time he had run into Koda in the woods had been by chance but after a few times, Shawn figured there really was no way to avoid each other. He was finding that apparently he wasn't the only one who felt connected to the outside which had been proven even further after the time he had spent talking to Annette. "I was half expecting for you to fly out of a tree somewhere," he joked, holding up the thermos of coffee he had in his hands. "You want a cup?"

Koda had taken her time going home from work, hugging the treeline in the park as she bounced to the beat of her walkman. She refused to accept CDs would take over though they were quickly on the rise and it was only a matter of time before she caved to get her own. The familiar mew of a cat in need was what got her into trouble, and convinced she would be able to ascend the three to rescue the creature. That went well to get up but once the small grey kitten had been collected into the safety of her arms Koda struggled to find a route down. Apparently, someone else had watched her attempt and a man was making their way over to her, from the looks of it with the solution to her problem. By that time she'd gotten comfortable, her new furry friend now fast asleep in the pocket of her hoodie due to some calming pets and Koda's eyes scoping what she could with an elevated view. "Bonsoir," she greeted when he got within earshot. "You should see the view from up here. I think if I squint I can see my place."

Lou was the more adventurous of her fur babies, having always gotten into trouble since she found him with his head stuck in a PVC pipe. This time it had been the effects of getting too comfortable with his owner and thinking she wouldn't mind if he had some of her snack that was littered with feline poisons. Trail mix was the perfect snack for Koda but what she feared could be a death sentence for her son. "You stupid baby," the girl muttered while pressing open the front door, going to the only place she knew.
"Yebat." There he stood at the counter looking as innocent as the day she left him behind. The world hadn't blown holes through him yet and Koda had the bullets to do it. Of course, it had to be him. A meow from Lou made it clear that their conversation would be inevitable. "I know, okay?" She warned her cat once more before making her way over. The blonde stood in front of him as if she hadn't vanished and placed her bloated child on the counter for consideration. "My cat uh, he's a dumbass and he got into my trail mix. I don't think he got a lot but it had raisins and chocolate chips in it so I wanted to make sure he's not like fucked or anything." More words than she would've said in any other situation but concern for her cat overrode any sense she had.

ɪɴᴛʀᴏᴅᴜᴄɪɴɢ... 𝙳𝚊𝚔𝚘𝚝𝚊 ‘𝙺𝚘𝚍𝚊’ 𝙵𝚊𝚑𝚎𝚢
Walking through the picturesque streets of Cardinal Hill, you find Dakota ‘Koda’ Fahey, the 28 year old cashier at Rewind Rentals originally from Waterford, Ireland. Living alongside them in such a small town, you know that they're adventurous and resourceful, but what you might not know is that they are a human, and that they’re hiding something…
As a child growing up in Ireland, her love for life seemed infinite. The cliffside was her sanctuary and the fields were her playgrounds. Dakota had just learned to speak when her family was whisked away to the States because of her dad's job. The only home she'd ever known was left behind for a decade trip across the new country. Her father was a scientist or as far as she had been told. They went where they had to to make ends meet and her mother did her best to make sure her daughter got a normal childhood which involved homeschooling and participating in activities anywhere they visited. It wasn't until Koda was in her teens that the truth started to come out.
Her father's brain was going towards the destruction of an entire group of people, those that Koda didn't even know existed. One night she snuck out of their van to see where her family slipped off once their child went to bed and that's where she learned the truth. Plans were being put in place because of her father's research and what he discovered went towards the removal of anyone who they deemed unclean. There were discussions of a man they were looking for who was involved and now they had been given a name due to his help. That's when everything changed. Confrontation didn't go well, they only tried to convince her that what they did was for her own good without hearing out the concerns of their child. What she had always thought was love had been their molding her into what they wanted her to become. After they saw the seeds of doubt in their daughter she was sent to live with her aunt in Texas but Koda didn't even last a year. She ran away at fifteen and caught a Greyhound, going as far as it would take her with a plan to find the family who she had severed her ties with.
Instead of becoming the mirror image of her father, she did the exact opposite. Everything she'd learned from him was what Koda used to look for the truth and that's when she landed in Cardinal Hill, Washington. The small town became home after bouncing between cities in the Pacific Northwest and rumor had it that it was a safe haven for those her bloodline despised. Maybe there she could find what she looked for. Koda searched for answers to the questions left behind by her parents. That's also where she met Lorenzo and almost let herself be happy. That was until she learned about his father, then pieces started to come together, unable to deny the probable involvement of her family, the answer she was most afraid of feeling far too close. That's when she vanished again, Koda having a knack for that.
